I understand the UY concept.

If I want a ressie for say November every year at my home resort then would a December UY be best for the whole 11 month window thing?

In the words of Thomas the Train "I think I can, I think I can," figure this out. :grouphug:

The short answer is NO.

UY has no meaning at all when it comes to making a reservation.

The reason I said no has to do with cancelling a reservation. With a UY shortly before you normally travel, if you cancel a reservation, then you have nearly a year to make a different reservation. Or to bank your points.

If you had a UY of Dec, and made a ressie for Nov, and say cancelled it in Sept, then you would have little time to use those points, and you'd be past your banking windows.

But again, UY has no bearing on making ressies or the 11 month window. All you have to do is have the points available at the time of travel.

So why do I keep seeing post's talking about a 11 month or 7 month window. What is this?

You can make a ressie at your home resort 11 months in advance, and at non-home resorts at 7 months in advance. If you normally travel in Nov, you can make ressies at you home resort in Dec regardless of your use year.

Use year is the month your points are re-issued every year.
eg, if you have a June UY, you could make a Nov 2007 ressie in Dec 2006 using points from June 1 2007 (which would normally expire May 31 2008).
If you have a Dec UY, you could make a Nov 2007 ressie in Dec 2006 using points from Dec 1 2006 (which would normally expire on Nov 30 2007).

What you want to keep in mind is that you can make reservations at 11 Months out at your Home Resort - but only 7 Months out at other DVC Resorts. That is what they 11 - 7 Month Thing is all about! It has nothing to do with your UY at all.

Another wonderful bunch of DISer's with answers. I am starting to understand this mind boggling thing called DVC.

Thanks all. :grouphug:

One thing to keep in mind is that points use is based on the date of stay, not the date of the reservation. If you have a December use year, those points would be good for stays 12/1 to 11/30. Those points are available as current year regardless of when you make the reservation. You can borrow from the next use year or used banked points from the previous year. Again, all use is based on the date of the stay.
