ARTICLE: Children who are spanked have lower IQs

I'm wondering about all these high IQs people are listing for themselves, their kids, their siblings-how do you know these scores?

Where/when were your kids' IQs tested? I don't think my kids' IQs have been tested. :confused3

Just wondering if it is common for kids to have IQ tests?

Schools will test children for their IQ to determine giftedness. I have no idea if this is with or without permission.

I was tested in Pennsylania in 3rd or 4th grade (though have no specific memory of such a test). When I moved to SC, I was placed in the gifted program based on the results of those tests.

I do not know my score.

I have my daughter's somewhere. She was tested with permission by her psychologist when we were having her evaluated for ADHD. She tested gifted, but I don't remember the specific score.

Not sure why people seem upset that people know their scores or their children have been tested. It's not a bad thing.:confused3

I didn't read all the responses, but I would guess that it's not that spanking causes lower IQ, but more that those who are most likely to spank have lower IQ's. I am NOT saying that all parents who spank have low IQ's! Just that maybe on the whole people with lower IQ's are more likely to spank than those with higher IQ's. They may be more prone to just repeat what their parents did, while higher IQ people might be more apt to try newer techniques. (not saying one is better than the other)
And who even tests IQ's any more anyway??? Other than Facebook?

I would argue that IQ has nothing to do with it and POSSIBLY lack of education, which is entirely different, comes into play when the ONLY method of discipline used is spanking. There are plenty of well educated people with high IQ's that spank as A method of discipline but probably not the ONLY method.

I was spanked as a child and have a fairly high IQ.

Hmmm...I have an MBA, my IQ is 136. I SPANKED MY CHILDREN! My children have IQ's of 150, 128, and 130.

Without being specific, I do have a high IQ which is Mensa eligible (more info on Mensa and qualifying scores - http://www.mensafoundation.org/Cont...res/QualifyingTestScores/QualifyingScores.htm)

I know my IQ because it used to be common for the schools to do IQ tests. The last one I had was in high school. I was in the library, and the counselor came in and said she wanted to meet me. I asked why (concerned I might be in trouble ;)), and she said that I had made the highest IQ score on the test.
I asked what it was, and she said they didn't give out that information. I was curious so when I got out of school, I wrote a letter to the high school telling them that I needed to get my IQ score for a college Psychology class I was taking (yep, that's right, bald faced lie... :rolleyes1). They sent me a copy of it.

My daughter was homeschooled so she never had an IQ test, but she did just get her B.S. in pharmacy with a 4.0 GPA and was awarded the highest academic honor the university gives. She's currently in pharmacy school.

Just for the record, I was spanked, and I spanked my daughter (both my huband and I have a M.S. degree in Geosciences). I've heard her comment more than once (while witnessing a brat in action) that that child needs a good spanking. ;) My child was corrected, not abused. There is a difference. And, yes, we did use other methods of correction first, but sometimes a spanking worked best for her (and I'm sure me too as a child).

I was spanked by intelligent parents and have a high IQ, college degrees, professional certifications with honors, etc. Statistics can say whatever you want them to say.

(And there is a big difference between a rare spanking and a constant stream of swats for every little thing.)

:thumbsup2

Sorry. Guess I was operating under the assumption that someone who has a lack of education would also test lower on an IQ test. I agree that it is likely more a Socio-economic thing than an actual IQ thing. Just like they found out that the reason winter babies seem to have a harder time in life, is probably because they are more likely to be born to disadvantaged mothers, and not because of the season they are born in. Of course that doesn't mean ALL winter babies have a hard time, but in statistics a small increase makes a big difference.

I think I was spanked because I was smarter than my parents.:thumbsup2

If you were so smart you would have been able to get out of the spanking.;)

I was spanked, I have a very high IQ as well. I am not a spanker but I don't have a problem with people spanking.
I don't think you can knock the smart out of someone unless you are whacking them in the head repetitively. That might cause some issues. :surfweb:

Wow a lot of people here have high IQ's! Maybe we can surmise that the sort of people who go all crazy researching their vacations are smarter than the average bear!
(note I am not lumping myself into that high IQ category)
I have never taken a real IQ test, but the one on Facebook said mine was over 130! Of course it said the same thing when my three year old just randomly chose the answers sooo...:rolleyes1

Come to think of it, whenever I did get a smack as a kid it was always for being a smart mouth. Maybe that article is right! :confused3

I'm going to go ahead and just go with that! Myself and my three year old are mensa grade genius'!!! Yay! :cool1:
Of course that might make it more difficult to explain the time I put laundry soap in the dishwasher....

Would you like to hear about the time I put dishwashing liquid in the dishwasher when I was young? I was out of dishwasher detergent and thought it would be okay (just goes to show those IQ tests don't cover everything :headache:). Let's just say I had a very clean floor! :rolleyes1

Yeah, my floor got real clean too and my kitchen smelled gain fresh all week!

HEY!!! Guess what? My DS12, who was spanked when younger, just walked in with his report card.

All A's :yay:......and he was only one of three kids who got an A in pre-algebra.

Spanking was common way back when. I wonder where all those geniuses came from?
