So tomorrow is the day I have planned for and looked forward to for more than a year - my family begins our WDW vacation! We have been so very excited for so long! And then today at work, I received news that was very upsetting and stressful. I have tried to put it out of my mind and focus on the excitement I should be feeling as we finish up our last minute packing... but instead, I've found myself getting snippy with my family and dwelling on this work situation. No matter how much I tell myself to stop.

Please help!! Can anyone offer some advice to help me figure out how to get my brain to leave this issue at work? And not put a damper on my family vacation? Thank you!

Sorry you are going through some stress right now. As long as you have your family and you are healthy, put that in perspective. That's the most important thing AND you are going to your 'happy place' full of magic. :grouphug:
I really hope you have a great holiday.
Sending you pixie dust pixiedust:.

Here is what has worked for me in the past. I usually have an early morning flight and arrive late morning. I make a reservation for Sci-Fi Dine In for a late lunch just in case the flight is delayed. Once inside the restaurant, I close my eyes and remember going to drive in theaters when I was young and try to shut out everything else. I refer to it as immediate total immersion. Try to take in all of the details Disney puts into things and you may be able to push the work situation out of your mind temporarily. Good luck and enjoy the trip.

The beverage idea may help too.

Fake it till you make it. Pretend you are fine. Act like you aren't worried. Act happy so that your family will be happy, too. Attitude is everything.

ATTITUDE - by Charles Swindoll

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes”

I am so sorry about your bad news. I do agree with what everyone wrote, however. I strongly believe that once you are there, you will be in a different state of mind. I do hope you have a great time! pixiedust:

Oh my goodness, this is PERFECT! Just what I needed to hear! (Or read ;) I 100% agree with this! I so believe the 10%, 90% bit... Aahh, just the reminder I needed right now! Thank you!

I like this very much! I am picturing myself doing this tomorrow, closing my eyes and taking in the happy sounds at the pool at Pop! Total immersion... Love it!

Thank you! And YES, the only really important thing is that I'm with my family and we are all healthy. So completely true. Thanks for the reminder to keep things in perspective :)

Have you talked with your SO about the bad news? It may help to get it out verbally.

My DH knows a little, but I didn't want to tell him everything, he gets much more worked up about things than I do. And I really don't want to ruin his trip. My friends/co-workers know, though, and their support is definitely helpful.

Sounds like a beverage or two might help things out!

Hopefully once you get there and soak in some pixie dust, you'll be able relax a bit and forget about work.

I hope it works out!

Lol, I think that beverage sounds pretty good right about now!

Thank you! Kind words, even from a stranger, honestly have made me feel better. Thank you!

Thank you for all of your posts! I really do feel like the advice you have all shared is helping already! Thank goodness :)

I would tell myself nothing in this world , is in front of my love for my family. Nothing in this world can replace that love and the your family love for you. When everybody else are against you.You know who won't be, your family will support and love you no matter what. I was T&D maker for 30 years I can't remember how many 2 or 3 week projects I made a mistake near end of project. Plant mgr. , foreman , other employees who i had worked with for 20 years , did they come to my defence or other work on CNC machines they couldn't even know how to program. I was so stressed out.I would go to bathroom and puke. Then I went home and my wife would know I had bad day and son too. They would smile give a hug and kiss and say we're proud of you Dad and we love you.Stress would melt away I learned that my family was more important than anything on God's green earth than that love. Money, cars, houses jobs, come and go Family love and support does't. Go to WDW and have magical time and what happens at work happens. You have loving family you'er rich beyond measure.

Unless some one is dying......the thing at work really won't make a difference in the very near future. Work is seldom as important as we make it out to be. Not trying to be mean spirited....just trying to give some perspective. It only took me about 25 years to figure that out.

I tend to be a worrier and then I worry about how that impacts my family lol! When on vacation (which is WDW 99% of the time), I try my best to let any worries go for the sake of everyone. One way I do this is to ask myself, "At the end of my life, will I regret how I am thinking/acting/reacting right now?" If worry is overtaking me, the answer is always yes. Actually having control over situations is usually just a mirage. Once we realize we really are only in control of our response to situations, rather than situations themselves, we can often live in the moment and appreciate the joys we have in the present. I hope you have a magical vacation!

Lots of good advice already. I just wanted to say, I hope you have a great holiday.

We flew out for a big trip the day after my Granny's funeral, and I thought it would be a waste going. It actually was hugely helpful as a distraction and really helped. I hope it works out as a much needed distraction for you too. Immerse yourself in all that you love at WDW.

Very upsetting can only mean really job loss or being transferred etc, right?

I know how work affects my vacation. Murphy's law with me is always when I have vacation planned something major is going on at work. I have worked on my laptop on the way to the airport and send final emails out that. I would looove having a few fun hours before a trip to pack in leisure. For me it's laptop next to suitcaes as something is burning at work. Or I have a not fun / bad situation to deal with always right before a trip!

My tip : be active. Proactivily address these issues at work. Say i want a meeting when back etc. i have sent emails out knowing a bad reAction is expected. But at least i did it before i'd left. Having that as a todo when I get back would distract, stress me during the trip.

So Advice: do what you can to address the situation before you leave. So at least you are doing something. Ex IF you are losing your job, update your linkedin before you leave. Step 1 done.

Also tell spouse. Not the kids though.

Can you say more about the bad news? Really depends. But if your vacation is still a go, I reckon you at least have that piece of fun to look forward to before going back to the real world.
