So I woke up this morning to find that somehow my PayPal account got hacked -- "DialUnion" took out $1 feeler, then "MyVirtualPhone Company" took out four additional payments - $10 and three $20 payments = $71 :furious:

I haven't used PayPal in forever, and have since changed my password and filed disputes for each of the charges. Now we're "waiting to hear back from merchant".

Do you know how long it takes to get these issues resolved? I can't imagine that the "merchant" has any way to make the charges stick.

Top it all off, we're out of coffee beans. What a lovely day this is turning out to be.

That stinks! Hope PP figures it out - was this directly from your PP account or did they use your PP debit card?

Youch!

Good Luck!

Just a very timely reminder to all PayPal users to use long, strong passwords and change periodically (every 90 days is a good idea).

Try this. I have an older style - like a key fob - that Paypal provided when they first started this program. You can only enter your paypal account with your password AND security code. Even if someone has your paypal password they still could not get into your account because they would not have the random token number.

PayPal Security Key

Get an extra layer of protection with the PayPal Security Key - it's easy to use and portable, so you can access your account with confidence from just about anywhere.
Already have a security key?

It will also work with your eBay account.

What is it?
The PayPal Security Key creates random temporary security codes that help safeguard your PayPal account when you log in. It comes in 2 types, each with different advantages:

Security key: You carry this small credit-card sized device with you. It creates a unique security code on the go.

Mobile phone security key: You can sign up to get security codes sent by text message to your mobile phone.

How much does it cost?
There is no fee to use your mobile phone as your PayPal Security Key. Standard text messaging rates apply when you receive a security code by SMS. Check with your mobile provider for details.

The credit-card size PayPal Security Key costs $29.95, and there's no monthly service fee or additional cost. Replacement keys are the same price.

How do I get started?
Choose the type of Security Key you want. You can start using your mobile phone Security Key right away. If you would like a credit-card size Security Key, we will ship it to you.

Activate it from your PayPal or eBay account.

I had my Paypal account hacked as well. You got off easy, they took nearly $1000 from me. I stopped payments through my bank and also filed unauthorized charges claims with PayPal. Everything worked out and I got all of my money back, but it sure was a big pain. Make sure you go through and change ALL of your passwords! I changed all of my online banking passwords, Amazon, etc. :badpc:

Thanks for the security key thing. I just signed up for it. I don't know how it works yet, but I will figure it out when I try to use pay pal I guess!

The exact same thing happened to me. They took about $700 from my bank account. I did recover my money and while on the phone with pay pal the nice customer service person gave me the security card for free. She also told me to change my passwords make all of them different from each other.it was a pain but paypal was easy to work with. It's scary!

Thanks for posting this. I went in and removed my bank account and credit card on file from Paypal this morning. I'll add it back if/when I need it.

My PP account was hacked for $400 through Itunes for video game stuff. Since I am not a gamer and PP saw several transactions in a row, they called me to tell me that they froze my account.

Since I do a lot of selling/buying through PP, they gave me a Security key free of charge. Otherwise it is $30-ish. Now even if they have my e-mail and PW, they can't get in unless they have the digits from the security key that change every time when you log in.

Scary, I only used pp once for something my son wanted to purchase, I don't even remember the password, now I am scared they can hack my bank acct thru the pp thing. Guess I will have to contact them to figure out how to make it more secure.

That's kind of how I use it, too. DH has cancelled his account completely -- he had only used it once.

Nothing further has been charged, and I'm awaiting the resolution process. We've made all of our passwords much more secure over the past year -- had completely forgotten about PayPal.

Thanks -- it's good to hear that they have good customer service.
