Around the 'World in 7 Days - Updated 2/5 with Day 3 Part Two!

Welcome! WDW marathon is celebrating its 15th anniversary in January of 2008. I think it's a great race for beginners so if you'd ever had the itch...

13.1 That .1 is really important after the first 13!

No I have to be honest and say I've NEVER had the itch to run a marathon, never had the itch to run anywhere for that matter. :lmao:

I can imagine the .1 is very important after the first 13. :faint:

Back at POFQ after the half marathon I decided that the FIRST thing I wanted was a shower. I jumped in while DH took our disgustingly sweaty running clothes over to the laundrymat and threw them in the wash. The wash/dry cycle time was just about perfect to give us a chance to revive ourselves for the rest of the day. (Remember the Stick that DH bought at the expo? He put it to good use and swears it helped him to ease his soreness. I’ll have to take his word on it as I didn’t use it.) I had no trouble with my legs or feet. I did have that one blister, but wore my Rainbows that afternoon and was very comfortable. We put on our medals, steeled ourselves for all the congrats we’d be receiving (HAH!), and took the bus over to Disney MGM Studios. (DFIL was on his way there to meet us after having watched quite a bit of the half marathon finish.)

Everyone was hungry, including me (or so I thought.) We stopped in at ToT for FastPasses and then took a quick walk over to Catalina Eddie’s and Rosie’s for hamburgers and pizzas. DH, DD and DFIL got hamburgers. DS and I got pizzas. You read that right. Pizza. For the woman who was sick the night before and that morning. I don't know why, but it sounded like a good idea at the time! Turned out to not be my best idea of the trip. I was able to eat (almost) one of the small slices and a bit of salad. (This was the only meal I felt like we wasted DDP on; DS and I should have split a meal.) The good news is that the my stomach stayed happy with that little bit of pizza and I waved my digestive problems farewell.

We all headed back to GMR, which is admittedly a bit slow but a tradition for us. (Our guide, when introducing himself, started to call himself by one name and then corrected himself. “Hello everyone my name is Bo… Eric”. What’s up with that? Are the guides so famous that they have to protect their privacy from fans who may become stalkers?) Our vehicle was unexpectedly ambushed by a gangster! Eric was kicked off! Perhaps “Eric” is his is his secret identity because he rescued us and disposed of the bad guy in the end. Wow! What a hero!

DD wanted to see Little Mermaid, which we hadn’t done in 8 years. Unfortunately we had just missed a show so we put that one on the back burner for later. (Cheers from DS, which is pretty ironic later in the trip!) We walked to a galaxy far, far away and rode Star Tours. (Without DFIL. It’s a bit rough for him.) When we went in the seat between DD and DS was covered with a blue cover; I assume it was broken. I told DD that the ride had been “enhanced” and I heard that Stitch appeared somewhere amongst the guests. She gave that blue seat a wary look but didn’t really fall for it. Stitch kept his stinky little self at the Magic Kingdom, thank goodness. :stitch2:

Every trip we try to do something new at each park, which is getting tough. We saw (heard?) Sounds Dangerous for the first time next. Probably the last time. Enough said. (Maybe not enough. Does anyone else find it disgusting to put on those headphones that have been worn by constant guest before you? :crazy2: I sat there imagining just what might be crawling into my ear.)

We walked back toward the front of the park just in time to snag front row seats for the parade, right in front of the giant sorcerer hat. I turned the video camera over to DS and the still camera over to DD. Came back with some interesting footage. But FINALLY, some pixie dust! pixiedust: One of the green army guys came over and was goofing around with DH and DS! pixiedust: One of the penguins from Mary Poppins (whom I love) came over and kissed me on the hand! Poor DD was left out.

Time for the highlight of MGM – Tower of Terror! (Well, normally the highlight is Rock n Roller Coaster, but Disney decided that people paying $90 to run 13.1 miles didn’t really need that much excitement in one weekend and closed it for refurbishment right before marathon weekend. Not that I’m bitter or anything.:snooty: ) We were really looking forward to ToT for two reasons: 1. We love it. 2. Disunc’s trip report. If you haven’t read it, you MUST read the part about ToT. Page 29 of the thread “Pop My Jibbitz”. I laughed until I cried. I printed it out and shared it with my family. It is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read!

The kids don’t mind the drop part of ToT, but the movie and ride to the drop really freak them out. They turn their backs to the movie in the "library". DD had so much angst I wasn’t sure she would make it, but she did! She was really scared, almost to the point of tears. Perhaps our hissing “Willie is waiting for you” (read DisUnc) didn’t help put her at ease. But once we started dropping and rising, she loved it as usual. I could tell, because she never stopped screaming! :scared1: The best part was yet to come – we saw Willie, star of Disunc’s trippie! (You really must read at least that installment.) Getting off, DD kept repeating “I love that ride!” Yeah, right. Once it’s over, maybe. I knew it would be tough to get her on it again.

We headed back to give the Little Mermaid one more shot – nope. We had ADRs for Le Cellier so we headed over to Epcot. I was so excited for this dinner after reading about it on the DIS! Would it stand up to my high expectations?

We arrived at Epcot with plenty of time to spare. We had a good rest riding through Spaceship Earth. Then we got our adrenalin pumping again on TestTrack, even DFIL. It was pretty much a walk on. We all love that one! The only part I hate is the cold chamber. I wish they’d put that before the heat chamber so I could warm up again!

We decided to head back to Le Cellier early, although our ADRs weren’t for another hour. The race and the extra early start were beginning to wear on all of us. The CM manning the check-in station was luckily very impressed by DH’s medal (or we looked as tired as we felt) so she got us in almost immediately. We were ushered into the Yukon. No need for a menu; I knew what I was getting. Cheese soup (we all had it; all loved it except DS), Mushroom Filet (DD had regular Filet instead) and Chocolate Moose. Excellent, excellent, good. At the end of the trip we all (except DS who had the beef and macaroni) rated this the best food. It was great and my stomach was more than ready for it at that point.

I did a lot of chatting with the woman at the table next to me. She was supposed to do the Goofy, but got swept off the half course so was not going to attempt the marathon the next day. She was a pace lady for Team in Training so everyone pacing with her got swept as well! She said that she had not passed the start line until 6:45 and they swept based on a 6:30 start. Don’t know, but it was awfully sad. I haven't heard anything more about that incident online or anywhere else.

After a good dinner and a long day, we were happy to head back to POFQ. There, we did our part to spread a bit of pixie dust. pixiedust: There was an older couple who were just checking in and we carried their luggage to their room for them. Just doing our part! Finally we got to collapse into bed. After all, morning comes quickly when it’s DH’s birthday with all the celebration that entails! And the big surprise ... :ssst:

HMHunters--I am loving the TR!! I am so sorry you had so many issues on the half and you were discouraged at the finish. Marathon weekend was tough! The full kicked my butt!!! But just think, you finished!!! How many people can say that?? :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Are you doing it again next year??? ;)

Are you doing it again next year??? ;)
Thanks for reading; your TR from last year's half was just wonderful. I really want to do the full. I just need to determine if my body and our budget can handle it! What are you doing next year? :mickeyjum :donald: :goofy:

Hi HMHunters and Aladdinsgirl!!

I so need u guys to motivate me back into the world of running/walking. It is so hard since marathon weekend '07 is long gone.

As soon as I hit the submit button on the online reg. form, you will be the first one to know.

Now...you and your husband need to join me.

Lan--I hear ya! If I don't have a race, I don't stay motivated. That's why I'm running the Flying Pig 1/2 on May 6th.

HMHunters--I'm not sure what I'm doing next year. I know DH wants to run the full for sure (he said no more Goofy for him :) ), so we'll be there marathon weekend regardless. I'm going to sign up for the full, but we'll see how the future looks whether I run it or not. ~~cough possible pregnancy cough~~

The full really wasn't that bad (unless I've forgotten the pain :rotfl: ). The worst part was the heat--which you both dealt with, so you know you can do it again, and for me, my IT band injury at mile 7. You both ran a half marathon in the worst conditions possible, so I think you could handle a full in better conditions. Besides, there can't be back to back years of miserable weather, can there?? :confused3 And since it's the 15th anniversary of the marathon, there's a special top-secret medal. Just something to think about. :)

Looking forward to your next installment!

:cool1:  :dance3: :cheer2:
party: :jumping1:
I am just a little excited reading this! That was a pretty feeble attempt at sneaking it in!! WOOO HOOO!
I suppose that would be an acceptable excuse for not running next year...

Are you willing to share any more details yet?

I'm not preggo yet, but I'd like to be by the marathon next year. I'm going to go ahead and sign up for the marathon though, just in case I'm not pregnant. I don't want to be sitting on the sidelines all sad when I could have been running!!

Signing up is sure to make it happen! Besides, you need to keep in shape so it's easier to get BACK into shape afterward. Having that out there will continue to motivate you and you'll have something wonderful to look forward to either way. (Not that a medal compares with a baby -- even a Mickey medal!) Best wishes; you and your DH will be in my prayers.

Good Luck!!

You will have to invest in one of the exercise strollers:banana:

Woohoo! I love hearing about the pixiedust :)

Le Cellier is on my list to try next time around. I've heard so many good reviews.

Anxious to hear about your DH's birthday.

Our plan was to get up around 7 and arrive at Animal Kingdom before opening. It was DH’s birthday and we had never ridden EE, although we had watched as it was built. We were all excited for this one! We hadn’t even had one roller coaster ride yet: RnR was closed; SM and BTMRR were too crowded. Finally it was our turn!

This was the day of the full marathon. I was reminded of that when we started hearing fireworks at 6 a.m. for the start. We got up and we could actually see them from our window! Okay, we lost an hour’s sleep, but how many times do you get to start your day with fireworks? Especially cool DH – it was his birthday! :woohoo:

We ate breakfast in the room (as we did all week. Mini bagels with peanut butter, Quaker Oatmeal to Go, bananas, and oranges in case you care) and piled into the car for Animal Kingdom. We arrived and headed down to Diamond Parking. There wasn’t a single parking attendant in sight. (We weren’t cheating; we did have a Diamond pass.) Running right through the edge of the parking lot were people doing the marathon! I can’t believe how excited I was to see them. We stood there for a quite a while cheering them on. I was really happy for all of them and it was quite inspiring to watch them as it was around the 17 mile mark. (This was toward the front of the pack. No one was walking and they all had a great pace going on!) I could have stood cheering them on a lot longer, but we had business to attend to.

We made our way to the entrance, where people were still being held outside the turnstiles. I went to guest services to get a birthday pin for DH who proudly wore it all day long. (It got him lots of birthday wishes from CMs!) We were standing there waiting when we were blessed with another bit of pixie dust. pixiedust: Wes Palm (the talking tree) came wheeling over to us and struck up a conversation with DS! (DS was wearing camouflage shorts. Wes told him that he had a cousin in the army. He was in the infantry. Get it? Infan-tree?) It was one of DS’s favorite parts of the trip. (You may begin to notice a theme: DS seemed to become a pixie dust magnet.)

Once in the park we decided to head for EE via Dinoland as most of the rushing crowd seemed to be heading the other way. It was a great plan except for one thing: the marathon course was running right along one of the paths that we had to cross (twice) to get there! It definitely slowed us down :rolleyes1 as we had to wait quite a long time for a break big enough to cross in, but it gave us another chance to cheer on the runners. (People around us were amazed at all the people we knew! I guess they figured we were part of some huge running community. We clued them in that the runners had their first names on their bibs. If you’re ever there for marathon weekend, pick out people to cheer for using their names. It’s always much appreciated and we got lots of waves and smiles from appreciative runners.)

Finally we made it to EE and grabbed FastPasses. Then we got in the line (by this I mean speed walked through the queuing area) and boarded. Great roller coaster! We got off, got a redneck ride photo (for those wondering, that’s when you take a picture of the screen showing your ride photo) and made our way through the queue again. (Someday I hope there’s a bit of a line as the queue area is really quite amazing and I’d like to see some of it in more detail! Dang, I've probably cursed myself now. A bit of a line, I said.) We rode again and noted our photo number on the way out. Then we used our redneck photo to get the first photo number and bought a sheet of 2 5X7’s – one of each. So there’s how to get two different photos for the price of one at Disney. :teacher:

It was great to start the day with a ride that was brand new to us, and we decided to try another we’d never done: Kali River Rapids. (Usually it’s too cold, but today it was definitely warm as anyone running the marathon would agree with.) DD and I wimped out and put on ponchos. My excuse was that I was carrying the cameras. :confused3 We walked right on this one as well and were seating with a family of three from Quebec. They had charming accents and were lots of fun to ride with. I was thankful to have the poncho. DS really got it – total soaking! He was absolutely drenched. As soon as we got off DD and DS got back in line to ride again. DH and I watched the ride from the bridge and got some good video and pictures of the kids. It took DS until dinner to dry off. He even took off his shoes so we could squeeze some water out his socks! He was a pretty good sport about it, although he did ask if we could go back to POFQ so he could change. (No way! Too much to do! Too much to see! We are definitely of the commando ilk.)

We met up with DFIL at this point. We walked single file along the bit of the walk that was open, the rest being used by marathon participants. (They weren’t quite as quick or lively as the first group we saw so we tried to cheer extra loud for them to encourage them on.) We spotted and entered another attraction we’d never done: Flights of Wonder. That was 3 new experiences in a row for us! Definitely a record! We sat in the back row as DFIL had his scooter. That got us another flurry of Pixie Dust. pixiedust: DH was chosen to participate in the show! He held up a dollar bill which a bird (some kind of African crow, I think) came and took from him. It then came back and returned the dollar to him. Pretty cool! (He did get a couple of scratches on his arm. We were waiting for them to get infected so we could get annual passes for life or something, but they healed without a problem.)

Flushed with success, we decided that DS and I would walk over for FPs for KS while the others strolled over to Flame Tree where we’d be eating lunch. DS and I gained an appreciation for how big this park is! We had just gotten our FPs when we got a call from DH telling us they were in line for the new Finding Nemo musical. Making our way back there we ran into DeVine and had to stop and watch for a couple minutes.

I couldn’t believe the line for FN! By the time we got there the others were already seated inside, but we stood in line and shuffled in with the crowd. :crowded: The CM (perhaps in her cast she was playing the part of the evil stepmother) kept informing us all that there was absolutely no seat saving not to even bother trying to meet up with people. That worried me a bit but we were able to find and sit with the rest of our family without a problem. As for the show: it was okay. We all decided we had enjoyed the Tarzan show more. This show seemed a bit long, especially for the younger set that it attracted. (But that’s FOUR brand new attractions for us in a row – a record that will surely remain unbroken!)

We slowly made our way to Flame Tree, slowed by the huge crowd exiting the show with us. I was afraid they’d all be looking for lunch, but there was virtually no line. Everyone but DS got the pork sandwiches which came with corn on the cob and beans. (Sandwich – excellent!! Corn – well, I only like it if it’s really fresh. Beans – good, but looked like they’d been sitting in the cup under a heat lamp for a while.) DS got a hotdog which he’d really been looking forward to. In all we spent $41.64 and signed it all off with the DDP.

Now it was time for our FPs so we headed to Africa and the Kilimanjaro Safaris. Because DFIL rode his scooter into the queue we ended up in the handicapped section, which is a totally different load area. It took absolutely forever! I believe the people we were in line with were exiting by the time our truck departed. We did have a good driver (Jared) but the animals, other than the crocs, were pretty scarce. I believe it was because it was so warm and late in the day; usually we do this ride first thing in the morning which I totally recommend. There wasn’t a single lion to be seen.

We decided to go see the Yeti again and use those FPs for EE we’d gotten first thing in the morning. Third time was just as good as the first two! Maybe better because I paid more attention to all the amazing detail that’s all through the ride. Wow!

It was already past the time we’d thought we’d be leaving AK, but we had done a lot. We still had a couple of things we wanted to do and knew we wouldn’t be returning, so we headed over to DinoLand. We love Primeval Whirl so we rode that. (DFIL took a pass.) I filmed it while DD kept up a great commentary (in the voice that tells you at the end “Please stand up before exiting. Bye Bye!" We love that announcement almost as much as the announcement on the monorail about the doors closing. We're easy to amuse, I guess.) :goodvibes

We headed over to ride Dinosaur. The line was pretty healthy so we got FPs which basically meant we could relax for that 30 minutes instead of standing in line. DD and I went and got everyone our favorite snack (Nestle Toll House Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches) and we relaxed and enjoyed those. Then we headed in for Dinosaur, which DFIL did ride (leaving his scooter outside). It was a bit rougher than he’d remembered, and he would have liked to be through with it about halfway through. I sat between DD and DS and had DD clinging to my arm screaming the whole way through! (She’s a screamer. It’s amazing when you look at our ride photos just how wide she can open her mouth!)

Although we hadn’t hit every attraction, we had spent more time at AK than ever before and decided it was time to head over and walk through Epcot over to our ADRs at Spoodles on the Boardwalk. That was DH’s request for his birthday dinner. He had no idea what was to come after dinner!! And neither do you!

That will have to wait for the next installment… :rolleyes1

Sounded like a great day at AK! I'll have to remember to hit KS first thing! :thumbsup2
Can't wait to read about the birthday dinner!:)

I'll vouch for your KS theory: I've been on it pretty much all times of day and the earlier, the better, especially when it's hot. What a terrific day you all had!
