The A/C stopped working Friday morning and the Heating & Air guy isn't coming until Monday. It is very hot and humid here. The best part of the day was going out to eat and sitting in the cool for 1-1/2 hours. It's about 86 degrees in the house and it's 1030pm:eek: I ate a popsicle. I washed my face. I have ceiling fans and box fans and oscillating fans going, all the doors and windows open and I'm just dying. I grew up in South Alabama without A/C and it obviously didn't kill me. But I wasn't menopausal back then either. :headache: I am about ready to crawl inside the freezer. I think I'll go take yet another cold shower.

Get a window fan and exhaust it out. Open other windows. It will create a flow of air thru out the house. Do this at night.

I wish you were having our weather! We're usually hot, humid, and basically unbearable at this time of year but this year it's cool enough that we don't run the a/c during the day and not always at night.
I hope you get a cool spell tomorrow!

My poor dog is suffering as well. He's an old Standard Poodle, 9 years old. He has lung disease, so he really gets stressed in hot weather. I've been keeping him out on the front porch most of the day (the coolest place in the house)and giving him extra water and ice cubes. If we could only get some rain...

OMG  You are not going to believe this. It just started raining BUCKETS out there. A real frog-strangler. Thank you! :worship: Thank you God for having mercy on us in the middle of the night.

That's great!!!!! I feel for you - I grew up without air conditioning, too, and I still remember how miserable it was. I hope never to be without it again...

I live in Alabama, and you if you get any of the weather we've had today, you'll be all set for Sunday, too. It was really stormy here today.

get the best airflow through the house at night to lower the temps.
then in the morning, close everything up!
do not open the doors etc during the day. this may sound weird but we know many people that do this instead of airconditioning. I do it many times during the season also, when its hot & humid out, I can get away without putting airconditioning on for quite a few days.

Your timing was probably good on this one. We are supposed to creep back into the 100's next week and I know that sometimes that heat moves to the east. I'm glad that it rained and I hope that it keeps on coming down!

go get some bags of ice & put a fan behind a tub/bowl of it

I actually had to , on one VERY HOT vehicle trip with NO air conditioning, get a small cooler , filled it with ice & bought a fan that ran off the cigarette lighter to blow on me...

I know the feeling! Mine went out last Sunday and my A/C guy didn't come until Thursday ... mainly because I had a big project at work that was due on Wednesday and I couldn't take the time off to be at the house. Anyway, I had fans going full blast and at night, I had two of them directed at my bed. We were expecting thunderstorms, but what little rain we did get only made it more humid!

Good news was, it was a burned wire in the compressor, so he was able to replace it and the house was nice and cold on Thursday afternoon. Bad news ... my 28 year old outside unit is almost rusted through and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will make it through the season (of course, here in South Louisiana, that could go until Christmas!). So, next spring, I'm looking at having to change out the entire system - both outside and inside since the new freon stuff regulations :confused3 will make my still good inside unit incompatible with a new outside unit. I'm now looking at about a $6000 expense instead of a fun Mardi Gras trip to WDW. Oh, well, c'est la vie!

OP, I hope your problem is a lot less expensive. Good luck!

We have seperate A/C units for upstairs and downstairs, and the upstairs went out in early July - just in time for a heat-wave. It was so hot upstairs, that I slept on the sofa in the family room. If the downstairs had gone out, we would have had to send my Mom to a hotel. She can't handle the heat. Ours went out on a Sunday, and it was repaired on Tuesday, thankfully!

And we've been in mostly below average temps ever since!

I was going to suggest the fanover ice deally, if your humidity is not too high already.

and you can get emergency service... but at a cost that will drain most life savings.

Also, for sleeping tonight, take everyone's pillow cases and put them in the freezer - now.. Seriously!

Cold, wet wash cloths around your necks..

Cold, wet wrist sweat bands..

Got any mister fans? Great way to keep refreshing yourself..

Take a shower - and air dry..

Wash your hair - and leave it wet..

Keep all doors/windows closed in the morning - and blinds/drapes closed..

Hope the heat isn't too bad until you can get your a/c fixed! :goodvibes

I totaly forgot about the cold/wet cloth on the neck. we survived four hours in full indiana sun at 100 Degrees F air temps. with the humidity the heat index was higher.

we used kitchen towel size> wet lightly> roll a few ice cubes inside. they take a real long time to melt and keep the whole towel cool.

the back of the neck is one of the body's thermostat zones. that is why you see the pedal bikers spraying water on that spot.
