argh Dave Ramsey

To the OP: Look at it this way, Do it for your wife. Compromise, because this is apparently important to her (I mean for crying out loud, a woman cut up her credit cards! do you realize the gravity of that?!) Try it her way, if you don't like it, you can always get back into debt in a matter of 5 minutes :D

I can totally see where you are coming from. And I am glad Dave Ramsey worked for you. I guess I am lucky my parents taught me how to manage my money. I lost my job last year and was out of work for 6 weeks. It was tough but I managed. That is where some of my debt came from because I had to pay rent and I had to eat...even if I was eating ramen noodles. I have a job now...even if it is with a temp agency. I have been lucky to get long term well paying assignments. I would love a permanent position though.

DR point is if you were financially secure, a loss income, even if it spanned several months would effect your emergency fund and little else. What if you were out of work for 6 mo or like myself, in an accident out of work for 9 mo.or the car died and you needed to replace it, or you got sick.
Sounds as if your EF may not be as much as might be beneficial. You may want to consider owning a home rather than renting-no equity-the landlord is the only one making out in that. Imagine how much you'd have if you were saving all the $$ going to CC debt. Good thinking with the car! I'm not judging, just sharing that many of us used to think like you are and then life happened-BOOM:scared1:

Not really, Frankiesmom! There are many helpful and knowledgeable people here on the budget board. DVCGIRL for one, totally rocks! I've learned a lot here and continue to do so. I've seen comments before directed to certain topics like debt that are hot-button, but I must say I've never seen a person being chased all over the boards in this manner before. :confused3 This isn't the standard M.O. so don't let it chase you away.

Mary

I've seen it, and it can get really freaky ugly. I think it was one of the reasons the mods started really clamping down on things and assigning points and whatnot-that seems to have eliminated a lot of it.

We are also working the "Dave" plan and we are still going to WDW in June. The key thing is you pay cash for the trip. For the last 2 years I have a line in my budget for vacation and have been saving accordingly. We have enough to pay the vacation in full, plus a golfing day for the guys.

It can work. While we have not been hard core with it, we have paid off $9k in a little over 1.5 yrs and that feels great. Could we have paid off more? Sure, but we are not the hard core kind of people and still want to live a little. By reading Dave's books and visiting forums has helped me change my spending ways.

I have a different opinion of that forum. People there are HARD CORE. Some are just ridiculous. I used to be a member and a discussion came up where I mentioned that my dh was taking out loans (ugh) to complete his degree so that he could get a permanent position at his job. I was RIPPED APART and told if the degree "was really that important [I'd] find a way to cash-flow it rather than take out a loan." Yeah, 'cuz everyone who's been out of a steady job for over a year, has a family, and pays for their own health insurance has $15K laying around to "cash-flow" a degree. They were unrelenting and couldn't believe that we wouldn't find SOME WAY to pay for college up front as well as keep our finances afloat.

I got private messages sympathizing and agreeing w/me that certain things (i.e. a college degree) had to be borrowed for, but no one had the guts to post those feelings to the actual MB.

Not the kind of community I want to be a part of. Of course, YMMV.

My question is how do you get into so much debt in the first place. DH and I have NEVER had a credit card. All we have in "debt" is a house loan. All three of our vehciles have been paid for before we drove them off the lot. We don't miss out on much either.

Well count your blessings that you could do that. Most people could not. I guess maybe next you will pay your house mortgage off and wonder why people have those.:confused3 :confused3

There are some hard core people there and I take them with a grain of salt. The one thing I have learned is that you have to do what is right for YOUR family and no financial guru can tell you what that is.

This is so true! The most important thing I learned was that I needed to tailor the advice to my situation and most importantly create a plan that I can live with. Some of his ideas work for my life and some don't, I take what I can use and leave the rest. I will say that the best investment I could ever make was in You Need a Budget software. It has been an awesome tool! The best $39 I ever spent. :cool1:

My wife has discovered Dave Ramsey and my WDW days are done! She cut up the credit cards and from now on if we can't pay cash we don't do it.:confused3 I have to admit the debt free thing will be nice but I sure do miss eating out and right now it looks like the next time I see WDW will be with great grand kids I don't even have yet.:scared1:

Congratulations on finding something to help you be smarter with finances.

I respect Dave's methods, while not following them to the core, he was still the catalyst that showed me there was a better way to manage money.

One thing we always did was still go to Disney while we were getting out of debt. We needed that balance, and worked for us.

Good Luck

Absolutely. And that's why dh will be graduating in 2 months with his B.A. and we will have a student loan to start paying in the fall. That's what we determined (after much discussion and prayer) was the most logical route for our family and to a secure financial future.

It was the attitude of so many of the members that made me bail on the forum.

Excuse me, you're filing bankruptcy on Tuesday, so your creditors are unlikely to ever be repaid the funds they loaned you, and yet your ticker says you're going to the Poly in 7 months? I think I see what the problem is.
Don't be so judgemental. It's not like their debt problems affect you. Show some compassion.

Respectfully, I don't think compassion is what's required here. I think common sense and adult behavior is. And incidentally, when creditors don't pay their debts, it does affect me — with higher consumer costs and higher interest rates.

Their bad financial behavior does affect you, though. Somebody foots the bill when they don't pay, and you can bet those big companies that they dusted will be happy to slough higher fees off onto their other paying customers...

I really think there are people who think that the companies just absorb the cost when someone declares bankruptcy. The reality is, the rest of us who pay our bills are the ones that pay for it because the costs are passed onto us.

I'm really not trying to gang up on anyone. I guess I'm just trying to be direct. I'm certainly not perfect with money, and I've made spending mistakes like everyone else has, but we've all got to be adults here. Our children are watching and learning from us. You don't file bankruptcy and take a luxury vacation in the same year. You don't say you can't pay your credit card bills if you aren't working full time. I don't know what attachment parenting is but I assume it means you want to be with your kids. We all do. When I decided to stay home with my kids when they were young I bought a $5,000 used car and drove it for 10 years. We didn't use credit cards. We rarely ate out. And we sure as heck didn't go to the Poly (or anywhere else) at WDW. And all the while I took classes to become a teacher so I could have the same schedule as my children. They're teens now, and I work full time. Finally, we can afford some more things like vacations, but we still pinch pennies. We still drive used cars. We eat out with coupons. My children mock me all the time with "I know, I know, 'We can't afford it!'" because I say that a lot. But I notice they are really good consumers now, looking closely at prices, refusing to follow fashion trends that are too pricey, etc. I really am not holier than thou, just trying to share what seems to me to be common sense.

You aren't that different than I am really. There is a lot there that is similar with you and I. It sounds like you have a great philosophy on living responsibly and set a good example for your children. Like I said, it really isn't "you" I was objecting to. But there are a few people that are apparently actively seeking out this person's posts from board to board and thread to thread just to snipe at her and it's getting downright creepy. I have read several threads where this has occurred and I felt I needed to say "something."

I do understand why people would be irked with her, but this is getting to be almost like a form of cyber-stalking.

A low profile might be prudent at this point for the poster in question.

To keep the thread on topic, I like some of what Dave Ramsey has to say. It doesn't all work for me, but there is definitely some pearls of wisdom to be found in his advice.

Yeah, but what about the ride that has the 3D glasses and dosen't go on the round fall.

If this is as good as they say it is Dave Ramsey will give in to a class action if the bell weather is going to stay off the MGM name or not.

However, I do like Tony's Town Square.

THAT'S NOT NICE, Your going to put your eye out with that thing.

However, David Bach's the Automatic Millionaire is outstanding.

We modified our plan. I could not go without a vacation (didn't have to be at disney, but I need one) for 3 years. I figured being debt free wouldn't be so much fun if I was in jail for manslaughter. worked for us We have a mortgage and a car note and that works well for us.

Yeah, I know enough about DR to say it's not for my family. Plenty of other more middle of the road advice to take, and you'll end up at the same place. And you won't have missed years of vacation and other fun stuff!

Some of the stuff he advocates is just .... bizarre. Makes him rich though!
