Good morning all and hope everyone had a nice Christmas. So we leave two weeks from today. My husband, 9 month old and 6 year old. So a nice sized crew. With a double stroller already rented (yes, I know). Anyway, on Christmas day I stepped on a toy and hurt my ankle. It is highly likely that I will be in a boot while at Disney. Of course all I can think about it how awful this is and have a mini pitty party. Has anyone dealt with this while at disney? Any advice for me? Thanks much.

I'd suggest you rent a wheel chair but your husband will already be pushing the stroller. Or get an electric chair you can move on your own. I had Achilles tendinitis our lAst trip. I used a cane which helped a lot. If standing is a problem get the cane that has a seat attached so you can sit while waiting in lines. Walking all day without some assistance is not going to be good for your ankle.

If you can, rent a electric scooter. They are very easy to use. That way your husband can push the kids and you don't have to walk much. We just got back and rented one for my mom (74) and she loved it. Hope you have a good trip, sorry that you are hurt.

If you choose to rent an ECV I urge you to get it from an offsite vendor. It is much cheaper.
Also know that using an ECV is intense. Folks cut in front of you, walk into you, stop dead in their tracks in front of you. They act as if you are invisible, which actually you nearly are as you are below their eye level.
I was exhausted each day from the necessary concentration.
I suggest you go to the disABILITIES forum here on the DIS. There are many experienced posters who can help you
Good Luck

third party rent an ecv and drive yourself around while your husband handles the stroller

don't get it from disney, you can only get them at the parks, it's much more money and it's first come first serve. a third party rental would let you use it all the time no matter where you end up going.

I'd suggest asking the physician that is prescribing you the walking boot is what your limitations are and then go from there.

We rented from Buena Vista Scooter and it went well. They had it at the resort before we arrived and then we could leave it with bell services for them to pick up. My mom was against getting one but she had it was the best decsion after our trip. You do have to watch out for people and take it a little slower in a crowd but she did really well and didn't hit anyone.

I went with an extreme foot injury and somehow (through prayers I think), I was able to walk. But I would suggest getting a scooter. I saw lots of people in the boot with them on my trip. Don't let it get in the way of your vacation - enjoy every moment!

Good news. No boot. Just an ankle brace. Doctor said basically no restrictions. It may hurt with the walking but I won't do any more damage while wearing the brace. So I will pack the advil and know that first aid stations have ice packs. It will also make me rest and just sit back and enjoy more. Thanks everyone.

It wouldn't be the worst idea to bring some compression socks to help with afternoon / evening swelling and some ice packs. As soon as you get back to the room, get off your foot and elevate it.

That is a great idea about the compression socks. Wouldn't have even thought of that. Thanks.

I was in a boot for a work trip, so nowhere near as much walking as WDW. One thing I found with the boot is that since your alignment is off thanks to it, your knees and hips and other leg get unhappy with you when you have to do a lot of walking, even if the booted foot itself is perfectly fine. For that reason alone I second teh others' recommendations for an ECV rented from an offsite vendor.

Also: are you flying down ? I flew with my boot. In addition to making getting through airport security a little more adventuresome and time consuming.... My boot has air bladders in it that are inflated to hold the boot solidly in place. Well, those suckers EXPAND AS THE ALTITUDE INCREASES. I had forgotten about them on the first leg of my journey until about two minutes after takeoff when my leg suddenly REALLY hurt from the extra pressure; fortunately I immediately realied what it was and deflated it. I had to deflate it a few more times during the flight. And then reinflate once we were back on the ground.

Thank you for the ideas. Turns out I will be in an ankle brace not a boot so just need to get some good new sneakers.

Rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

Listen to your body is the number 1 thing I can suggest. Don't ignore pain or weakness.

A few years back, I developed a case of Gout while on vacation. It is not something that I've had before, so I don't have medication for it, and figured I'd just tough it out, which I did. The pain was pretty intense, so much so that just having the sheets touch it at night was horribly painful, however I was still able to get through the trip, and have a good time. Make sure you have pain killers (I used Naproxin) and give it a rest when you need to, and I think you will do just fine.

This is good news! If for whatever reason when you get there and the pain is unbearable, even part way through the trip, I echo what everyone's said, don't hesitate to rent an ECV from on offsite vendor. I have bad feet and even after a couple surgeries it doesn't help when on them for extended periods of times, like walking around WDW. The offsite rental was the best tip that was given to me. It made my trip that much more enjoyable, because I wasn't in pain.
