Are you serious? We get to go back? – Nov PTR ~ Update 3/5 A real update, I swear!

FDM

Fuzzy Disney Math

(I'm a big fan of it)

:goodvibes

OOOooookay :) I have heard many stories of this "fuzzy math." I think I may have even used it a couple of times, as you'll probably see, to plan this trip. ;)

I forgot that the zebra domes are available at Mara!!! woohoo. It's the little things that make me happy. ;)

Angelyn - She is the person I was referring to. Anything you need to know about FDM, you can ask her. She will make magic happen. ;)

What is Mara? Is this a restaurant I haven't heard about yet? popcorn::

For what it's worth, I think a lot of the mansions are pretty far from the main building and POFQ, so you may want to make a more specific request if you don't want a long hike. Here's a link to a map of the building locations:

http://www.portorleans.org/maps-and-directions.php

Glad you got savanna view at AKL! I don't think you can go wrong there! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the map! I think we requested Parterre Place but I'm going to call this week and double check. I don't know if it means anything that we'll have 3 rooms at POR and are hoping to be placed near each other...

Plus, I am in awe of those photos of the Grand Californian. Amazing. I need to stay there one of these days.....

It really is a gorgeous resort. I hope you get to see it someday! We have stayed there a couple of times on AP discounts. But even if I'm not staying there, sometimes I stop there on the way home from L.A. (we live in San Diego). Sometimes I have to drive to L.A. for work. So when I'm driving home at the end of the day, if it is getting near rush hour time, I will stop in at the Grand Californian, eat some dinner, check my email and do a little work on my laptop. It is the perfect way to decompress after driving the freeways up there :scared1: and is a nice respite from the traffic.

Hotels

As Alison mentioned, I went fishing for a Pin Code and was successful, thanks to tips I read here on the boards.

But HEY!! (keep telling myself this) We are a catch right? Group of 8 people...varying ages, tastes and interests...looking to be in Florida for two whole weeks? Why wouldn't Disney want to offer us a code? Amirite? :rotfl:

(This is the part where I look in the mirror and say "You're good enough; you're smart enough; and gosh darnit, people LIKE you!" :rotfl2:)

So I simply told the truth about what we were looking for, after signing up at the Disneyworld web site, and then didn't book a trip. Within a week, we had the 25/30/40 offer people were talking about.

Originally, our plan was to stay at Riverside, the Marriott timeshare, and then end our trip with 2 days at the Contemporary, while the rest of our family stayed at AKL. Our thinking was: go out with a bang by staying Deluxe the last couple of nights!

But unfortunately we later realized that Bryan and Elijah both have to leave 2 days earlier than the rest of us, due to school schedules. Therefore, they're going to miss the Deluxe stay and the whole point of the trip was a graduation present for Elijah.

So that got me thinking. We are arriving 1 day earlier than Alison & Todd and 2 days earlier than Mom & Dad.

So after whipping out my “fuzzy” abacus, :teacher: and playing around with pin codes, public discounts, etc. etc. I upgraded us for the first 3 nights of the trip so the boys can have the experience of a Deluxe stay.

…at….

Polyexterior.jpg

That’s right, the good ole’ Polynesian. Hubby really wanted to try staying at a monorail resort, and we were lucky there were still a few discounted rooms available!

After the Poly, we’ll join the family at Riverside and then the Marriott. At the end of the trip, my boys will leave 2 days before the rest of us. I’m going to double up with Mom & Dad at AKL for those two days, and we’ll drop our Contemporary reservation.

Since we only have a few days at the Poly, I’m trying to schedule ways for us to have time to enjoy the resort.

I was already so excited about POR, after reading reviews and seeing photos here. While we have stayed "on property" before at Disneyland in California, on-property in Florida is a first for all of us!! I love the idea of walking the POR resort early in the morning, absorbed in nature, the walking paths, the boat to Downtown Disney!! All of those things seem like so much fun. So the Poly is really the icing on the cake.

This is what we are thinking for our first few days:

Saturday – Plane arrives around 5:30. We'll take ME to the Poly and check in. Eat dinner at Kona Café and take the monorail around the resort loop. (It’s really too bad it will be dark then. This is Bryan’s first time to WDW and I wanted to do something to get them both excited. But I’ll take a monorail ride in the dark, too!) Maybe watch Wishes from the beach if we are not too exhausted.

Sunday – Todd, Alison & Dylan arrive late tonight. So we’ll do the Magic Kingdom today, in case they have energy for Extra Magic Hours after they arrive from the airport. I think this morning, we’ll probably order room service so we can get an early start….that is, IF the boys will allow me to wake them up early. :rolleyes1 It’s not “too much” to do rope drop and Late EMH in one day...right?

Whether or not we actually make rope drop, we’ll spend a few hours in the park, then come back to the Poly for some relaxation time (and swimming, if it’s warm enough). Then back to the MK and meet up with Todd & Alison later that night.

Monday – Mom and Dad arrive…

And now...a request (Please!) for suggestions:
The one thing I'm a bit concerned about on this trip is that Elijah have fun. He has always loved our family trips, but since he's 17 now I'm worried he is going to be bored without any friends his own age.

Are there fun things for teens/college freshmen to do if he gets sick of Mom & Dad? :scared: Are there places teens and younger college students can go at WDW to meet other teens? I know that some of the Disney Cruises have activities for teens for just this reason, but I'm not sure about WDW.

I'm sure he will be fine :) He's a good natured kid and goes along easily. I just feel bad - I wish we could afford to bring a friend with him, so he would have some same-age companionship.

Any and all suggestions are welcome!!

I'm here! My mom and I will be there Nov. 30 - Dec. 7 so we'll overlap a little in our trips! I think you are going to love your resort choices! POR is so pretty and quaint and I love the boat ride to DTD. But, I have to say AKL and the POLY are my absovlute favorite resorts at WDW! We have a time share at Sheraton Vistana but I always justify it to my dad that if we stay at Disney we don't have to rent a car and can get the Dining Plan.. I always seem to slip the Fuzzy Disney Math into this part :lmao: I'm so glad you're eating at Kona Cafe too because it's my all time favorite restaurant! Can't wait to hear more plans!

I have seen that site before, but I have not had time to go all the way through it. I can see what you mean about some of the buildings being far from everything. Not sure how much we will get to use the pool since it will be November. I know the weather is usually nice, but maybe not "swim every day" nice.

Oh my gosh, Alison, that's amazing news! That sounds like a perfect mix of resorts! I can not wait to hear what you think about POR. I keep thinking that we seem to be on such parallel paths, it's crazy.

We have actually just booked our flights for a trip back early next year (I hope it won't be too cold) and are thinking of staying at POR. We are trying to take advantage of FD this time around. We've never stayed at a moderate before, so we kind of wanted to try it out. We're also going for a long time, so not sure we can swing a deluxe or the Dolphin again. we also tossed around the idea of staying a few nights at the Sheraton Vistana because my husband is dying to try it out.

Can't wait to hear all about the plans even more now! Plus, I am in awe of those photos of the Grand Californian. Amazing. I need to stay there one of these days.....

Yay! That's exciting that you booked another trip! I have heard so many good things about POR, but I have never stayed in a Deluxe to have a comparison. :confused3 I'm sure that staying in the Dolphin in amazing, and you will be giving up the great location near Epcot and DHS, but if it allows you to stay for a longer trip, it is probaby worth it. :thumbsup2

If you need any info about the Sheraton, let me know. We have stayed there probably 5 times and we love it. You can not beat the location. So many restaurants and shops all around it. Probably a 10 minute drive to the Disney property.

See and I'm just thinking you'll score on some cool jewelry there :rotfl:

I would have to do Savannah if I stayed there I think. I can't imagine being in that gorgeous place and looking at....a parking lot.

FDM is the best thing ever. It definitely "created" the May trip for me. And PIN codes rock! I'm a bit sad I've not gotten one for 2011...I think they are on to me. I'm not even getting that survey at the end of a mock booking, what's up with that? Those mansions look SO pretty!

Ooooh, jewelry. It does seem like I always come back from WDW with lots of new necklaces... I agree with you about a parking lot view at AKL. Why pay the money to stay there if you are not going to enjoy every part of your visit? A pool view looks nice too, but we really thought it was worth it to upgrade to see the animals.

Ha, ha. Disney has you on one of their "most wanted" lists. Don't give her the PIN code, no matter how hard she tries! Ha, ha. I hope that isn't the case.

Dylan will definitely like looking at the animals! :thumbsup2

Last time we were there, he was really into the birds. :confused3 Hopefully he will think the bigger animals are cool this time, because you can see birds just about anywhere at WDW.

I can't take the credit. I think that maybe 2(?) out of the 5 are mine (the Christmas tree one and the stained glass door). Some of these were grabbed off the GCH thread here and I think one from Google Images. At this point all the ones I like have gotten mixed together. :dance3:

Ok, well I don't feel so bad about my own photography skills now. Every time we are there, I try a million different settings on my camera and I just can't master it. There is so much detail that I can't capture. Love that lobby! It's so comfortable, we could sit there for a whole afternoon.

OOOooookay :) I have heard many stories of this "fuzzy math." I think I may have even used it a couple of times, as you'll probably see, to plan this trip. ;)

FDM is how most of my trips get planned. :rotfl:

What is Mara? Is this a restaurant I haven't heard about yet? popcorn::

Mara is the food court-type place at the AKL. The regular food you can get for quick service. BUT, they sell the zebra domes there (which is one of the best deserts at Boma, so you don't have to wait to eat at Boma to score the desert. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the map! I think we requested Parterre Place but I'm going to call this week and double check. I don't know if it means anything that we'll have 3 rooms at POR and are hoping to be placed near each other...

I think I just requested being in the mansions. Not sure if I actually requested a specific building. Did you call on this yet?

The Grand Californian has become one of my all time favorites too. I love that you can walk out the door and right into the park. Also, you can take a break from the park in the lobby and let your kids run around and have some space, while you sit on the comfy couches & chill out. I used to love living so close to the DLR for the same reason. Stand-still traffic in LA means a pit stop for a couple of hours at Disneyland.

Welcome!! Thanks for stopping in. I see your PTR link in your signature, so I will have to jump over & read about your plans!

Aren't you excited to be going at that time of year? Before Christmas so you get to see all the lights, but there won't be a huge crowd of people? I can't wait!!

Oooh, good idea about confusing others with FDM to stay on-property! Throw around the words "free dining" and that would confuse a lot of people. I like the way you plan!

HAHA that's exactly what I did. My dad tried to tell us to stay at the Sheraton in December but I said if he let us stay on property and get the Free Dining we would upgrade our tickets to Annual Passes and stay at the Sheraton in March when we wouldn't need tickets and would be ineligible for most offers anyway. See how I squeezed another trip in there too!?!? Just gotta word things right :lmao:

You are my kind of planner. It's funny how the words "free food" will confuse people.

I looked at my ticker today and it says 1 month & 2 days until our trip!! How is that possible? I have been pretty sick the last few days, and as I have been thinking about our trip (in between naps) I have been thinking about how many details still have not been nailed down yet. I was just talking to Todd today about switching hotels on Thanksgiving day, and when are we going to get groceries & other items for our week-long stay at our condo? Most places are closed on Thanksgiving, right? Then the day after Thanksgiving is “Black Friday” and most stores are going to be insanely busy. I need to get moving on detail planning, but my brain is still pretty foggy with all of the cold medicine that I have been taking. So, please excuse this update if it ends up not making any sense.

Now that Dylan is 3 years old, our whole world changes (financially) for this trip. Last time, we did not pay for a plane ticket (he sat on our laps) and we did not have to pay for a park ticket (he was 1 ½ years old). This time we have to pay for both, and since plane fares are so high from the west coast, those 2 items are adding almost $700 to our expenses that we did not have last time!!! We played online with flights & dates for a few weeks and we realized that we were in the ballpark of $500 per person….yuck.

Last time we able to use our rewards points off of our credit card to get both plane tickets for free, so we checked and there was not enough to cover all of us. BUT, we could cover 2 of them. To make a long story short, we could never work it out to fly on Saturday because the cost of the flight was almost DOUBLE the price of flying out on Sunday, the very next day. :headache::headache: We had to settle for flying out on Sunday, Nov. 21. I am so bummed to be losing a whole day in WDW! What makes it even feel worse is that our plane doesn’t land until around 9pm on Sunday, so our first official day is Monday. Angelynn’s family was able to get affordable flights out of southern Cal on Saturday, so they will be there 1 whole day before us.

The good news is that since we got 2 of our flights free, we only paid about $500 for our tickets, which came in WAY under what we had budgeted. We also are getting to fly from the small airport in the city where we live, rather than driving 2 ½ hours to Sacramento. This will save us on gas and on parking our car for 2 weeks at the airport. We are going to have a friend drop us off & pick us up. Once we get there, we have rented a car to get around with, since we will be off property for half of the trip.

I still keep checking on flights for that Saturday because I am hoping for a random “cheap” flight to pop up and we would be able to switch, but I know it won’t happened. I am bummed about losing a day at Disney, but I will be saving money on one less night of hotel and one less day of the rental car.

So our official dates of the trip (for my family) is Sun, Nov. 21 – Sat. Dec. 4. We will be staying at POR for 4 nights, the Marriott condo for a week and AKL for 2 nights. Up next will be our itinerary and probably our ADR’s too!

I'm in! What an amazing trip you have planned! I'm envious of your resorts this trip!
We'll be in Orlando Nov 23-Dec 4th, but only in Disney the 28th-4th. We'll be with family before hand for a visit and for Thanksgiving.

I'm sorry you had to give a day at Disney! But, I'm sure it'll still be fun filled almost 2 weeks!! I think most grocery stores are open for at least a little bit on Thanksgiving earlier in the day so if you head over early you should be able to pick them up!

what a bummer about the flights but you have to do what makes sense and it's still an amazing trip!!!!!!! and saving money is more to spend there. :lmao:

Welcome! Thank you for reading. :goodvibes I am so excited about all of the different places we get to stay.

Wow, our dates totally overlap. Are you writing a PTR? Where are you staying?

I shouldn't be complaining about losing a day. I just really had it in my head that we would fly out Saturday and go to the MK on Sunday to take advantage of EMH. That won't happen now and I'm a little disappointed. :sad1:

I hope you are right about the grocery stores. We usually go to that Super Walmart that isn't too far away, and I am just envisioning a crazy trip to Walmart on that day or (worse) on Black Friday. I don't know if I have the strength to deal with that. ;)

what a bummer about the flights but you have to do what makes sense and it's still an amazing trip!!!!!!! and saving money is more to spend there. :lmao:

It is a bummer. You know how it is when you live on the west coast... you lose a whole day just travelling there. It feels like precious time is being wasted! But I am happy we didn't have to pay $1500 for 3 plane tickets, so I should stop complaining now. :rolleyes1

Hi Alison!! I'm here and sooo excited that we're going to be at the WCC the same night and time! Looking forward to seeing your other ADRs and park plans!! :goodvibes

We are less than a month away from our trip!!:banana: Let the freaking out begin. I have not spent as much time on this trip as I should have at this point. Yikes!

Since we have 8 people flying in from 3 different parts of California, we are all on a slightly different schedule for the first few days. Our usual routine is to put a FREE day onto the schedule every 2 –3 days. This has really helped us from getting burned out on going to the parks and gives us unscheduled time to go shopping or do some other non-Disney activity. Since we are going to try to avoid the parks during the majority of the Thanksgiving weekend, a lot of our Free days are falling during that time. Not sure how that is going to affect the rest of the trip since we are used to having those days more spread out throughout the trip.

Here is the run-down on our activities:

Saturday November 20
Angelyn, Brian & Elijah fly in

Sunday November 21
Todd, Alison, Dylan fly in. Our flight lands late, but the MK has EMH until 3:00 am, so we may try to go for a couple of hours. We will still be on West coast time, so Dylan might be able to handle going for a little while. If not, we will just hang out at the hotel.

Monday, November 22
Partial Free day
Sleep in, DHS for a while, Free afternoon, mom & dad fly in, back to DHS for EMH.

Tuesday, November 23
Epcot Day
ADR – Kona Café for breakfast @ Poly
Monorail over to Epcot
ADR – Les Chef’s de France for lunch. This is a new restaurant for us and we are looking forward to it. It is definitely outside our normal eating "comfort zone", but we saw the menu and it sounds good!

Wednesday, November 24
AK day
No ADR’s but probably one meal will be at the Flame Tree BBQ
Late EMH. I am so excited about this because we have never been at the AK when it is dark out. Can’t wait to take pictures of everything lit up.

Thursday, November 25 (Thanksgiving Day)
FREE day
Switch hotels – moving to the Marriott
ADR – Thanksgiving meal at either Olivia’s (Old Key West) or 1900 Park Faire (Grand Floridian). We have an ADR for both, but we haven’t decided which place we will be going to.
We will probably avoid the parks altogether this day because of the crowds, but if we decided to brave it, we will go to DHS .

Friday, November 26
FREE Day.
Bryan’s birthday.
Hang out at our new hotel, maybe do some shopping (it is Black Friday, though, so that scares me a little bit).
Eat dinner off property. It will be a birthday dinner for Bryan so he will get first pick of where we eat. We were possibly thinking about Miller’s Ale House.
Watch the fireworks from the beach at the Poly to end the evening?

Saturday, November 27
(Another) FREE Day
No real plans for this day yet, but probably will be resort hopping to look at all of the Christmas Lights. Not sure if we will do the monorail loop, or try to drive do the moderate resorts to check them out.
ADR – Whispering Canyon Café for dinner @ WL
Spend time at the WL looking at their decorations. Also possible DIS meet with Becky & family (ladybugmom).

Sunday, November 28
Epcot day
ADR – Ohana for dinner @ the Poly. This is another first for us and I could not be more excited about eating here.

Monday, November 29
Magic Kingdom day
ADR – Crystal Palace for breakfast. We had such a good time at this meal last time, we are doing it again. Dylan really enjoyed the characters and we got some great photos.
Hopefully plan to see Spectromagic and the fireworks on this night.

Tuesday, November 30
DHS day
The only specific plans for this day are to spend time enjoying the Osborne Lights this night.

Wednesday, December 1
FREE day
ADR – Boma for dinner @ AKL. One of our favorite places and since Bryan has never been to WDW, I think he is the only person who has not eaten here. We are hoping that he loves it.

Thursday, December 2
Animal Kingdom day
Switching hotels from the Marriott to the Animal Kingdom Lodge!!
Bryan and Elijah fly home
ADR – Yak & Yeti for lunch
We plan on spending some good time at the hotel on this day. It is a special treat for us to get to stay there and we want to take advantage of it.

Friday, December 3
Epcot day
More free time at AKL

Saturday, December 4
Fly home VERY early in the morning.

After typing that up, I am looking at the time spent at each park and seeing that we don’t have a lot of time scheduled for the Magic Kingdom. I may need to take another look at that… There is 2 reasons for this. One of them is that since we live in California, we are fortunate to get to go to Disneyland pretty frequently. Since the MK is so similar to Disneyland, we feel like we get to go on those rides more often. The other parks are more of a unique experience to us so we tend to focus a little more on them.

The other reason is that because of the way we are switching hotels, we are on & off property every few days. So we are trying to take advantage of the EMH when we are staying on property, and then avoiding the EMH park completely on the days that we are staying off property. It has me a little confused.

We are still trying to figure it out, but this has been the loose structure for a while now. We have not fit in our time at DTD yet, or going shopping at our favorite stores at the Premium Outlets. We are also considering a water park (Bryan’s request) and maybe a visit to IOA to see the new Harry Potter land.

Can you see why I am freaking out a little? I feel like I need to start thinking about details and we don’t have some of the big things worked out yet. Any opinions?

Plans look great! I do agree that you don't have a ton of MK time, but it kinda makes sense given all the DL time you've had. I will say that if you are able to pull off that late EMH at MK when you arrive (especially the last couple hours of it), you will probably be able to do most everything you want to in the MK without lines. At least that has been our experience. We LOVE the late nights there. Also, Pluto, Goofy, and Chip and Dale have been known to hang out in Fantasyland and ride Dumbo and the Carousel with the little kids during those late hours.

ADRs sound great! Also, if you get hungry before you leave AKL in the morning, Boma has a great breakfast too! Yummy! And I am glad that you are leaving time to enjoy your stay at AKL. We were so busy the time we stayed there that we really didn't get as much time to enjoy it as we would have liked. We'd love to go back there. It is magical.

I think that, even without evenly-spread free days, you seem to have left enough open/flexible time in your schedule that you could probably squeeze in some of the other things you mentioned. (Harry Potter might be tricky, but DD and shopping, probably).

Oh, I almost forgot, AK is very cool at night! We were only there once after dark, but it's so cool to see Everest and the Tree all lit up! Also, in our experience, towards the end of EMH there was zero line for Everest!

Tuesday, November 23
Epcot Day
ADR – Kona Café for breakfast @ Poly
Monorail over to Epcot

Remember, you can walk in a short amount of time from the Poly to the TTC to get on the monorail to Epcot!

Wednesday, November 24
AK day
No ADR’s but probably one meal will be at the Flame Tree BBQ
Late EMH. I am so excited about this because we have never been at the AK when it is dark out. Can’t wait to take pictures of everything lit up.

AK is so neat at night! It looks like a different park!

That's a good idea-avoiding the parks because of the holiday! Both Olivia's and 1900 PF are good, IMO. I guess it just depends on whether or not you want to meet characters and which menu appeals to you more. Both Resorts are great for walking around and exploring.

Friday, November 26
Watch the fireworks from the beach at the Poly to end the evening?

Wishes from the Poly beach is so neat!

Saturday, November 27
ADR – Whispering Canyon Café for dinner @ WL
Spend time at the WL looking at their decorations. Also possible DIS meet with Becky & family (ladybugmom).

I hope you guys enjoy WCC! WL is beautiful! Head over to the Villas there and walk around the lobby. Off to one room there are some games like checkers and stuff. It'd be a fun, relaxing time. There's fireplaces in there as well, so it'd make things nice and cozy.

Sunday, November 28
Epcot day
ADR – Ohana for dinner @ the Poly. This is another first for us and I could not be more excited about eating here.

When you check in to Ohana, ask if there's any tables open by the window with a MK view. It's not guaranteed, but it's worth a try!

the plans look good and make a lot of sense. I think you will love Ohana and I'm curious to see what you end up deciding for thanksgiving day.

Feel free to PM me here or on FB if you want any IOA/HP info. It will be quite a while before I get to it in my TR...you might be on your trip or back from it before that happens!
