By per capita incom, we're ranked 79. Kane County, IL. We make over the median income (well over). Still can barely afford a house!

I wouldn't put much stock in this list. We currently live in #7 and will be moving soon to #79. While there are many affluent people in both counties there also are plenty relying on govt assistance.

Yep, I was born and Raised in #1/#3 (Marin County, CA). Currently live in Chicago (Cook County), which isn't on the list, which with some of the cities, is a little suprising.

my county is on the list...but we definately don't have a "rich" house...
it's a 1600 sq ft cape on less than 1/4 acre land. We bought it in 1996 for $148,000 ~ the market has gone through the roof since then. I'm glad we bought when we did!

The list doesn't really have anything to do with real estate values -- it's purely a per capita income listing from the 2000 Census. For some reason, people started listing their housing costs along with their responses to the list.

Marin County, CA is #1 on the list. I thought I read somewhere that Marin County has some of the highest number of breast cancer cases in the United States. It was on some TV show. I think it said they were looking at a link between lawn pesticides and the high amounts of breast cancer. I also remember the Doctors being quite shocked at the numbers in a place that has such a high quality of life and excellent medical care.

I just find it interesting.

The best medical care in the world can't stop cancer. There might be some correlation between lawn pesticides and cancer or it could just be that people who have more money and access to better medical care get more frequent check-ups (and thus are diagnosed quicker).

Yikes! we lived in Denton Cty, TX--Corinth-- in 1997 & we're far from rich
In 1997 we got a new 3,000 sq ft house (4 bdrm/split master/2 -1/2 bath/no development to the back/ smaller (50 houses) neighborhood, etc) for $158,000
When we moved back to NH in '99, couldn't even come close.
Depending on which town you moved to in NH in 1999, the same house would've been about $325,000 to over $500,000
In a year or two, DH's company will build an auxillary plant in NH, but it will be in Rockingham Cty,also on the list.
At first I got all excited--we could move, he would have a much shorter commute, we don't like city, but the houses off the beaten path cost less--then I checked out housing costs --we will be staying right here in Washington.

Could it be the vast amounts of silicone living in that county?
I know that can cause cancer too.
