Creamed chipped beef on toast? I am wondering if this is a regional food, because we can't find it in any restaurants around here.

Yep, my dad loves it because he used to eat it in the Army all the time. (Slang for poo) on a shingle!

Yes, I like it a lot, but hardly ever see it anywhere.

I am familiar with it. And just wanted to say hi, Jen, long time no see. Check in on the old timers' thread in my signature. Great seeing you. :cool1:

I hate it (not a fan of corned beef), but DH loves it. Definitely not regional. I rarely see it at restaurants, though..

My grandmother always made it. She also called it "poo" on a shingle. :rotfl:

I never saw it in a restaurant either, but saw plenty of it in the Army. We called it s.o.s. =s... on a shingle. My mother used to make it for us when we were kids.

I love SOS!!! Try a greasy spoon type of restuarant to find it on a menu.

My Dad loved it(I hate it). He had it when he was in the airforce.

My mom used to make it for my dad--he loved it.

She tried feeding it to the kids once, that never happened again LOL!

There's a home delivery near us called Schwans. They sell chipped beef. I've never purchased it, so I can't say if it's good or not :)

I actually like it a lot, but rarely make it. The only place I've ever seen it is in the frozen food section. I think Stauffer's (sp?) makes it.

My mom made it for us as kids. I haven't made it in ahwile. I use that cheap Carl Budding beef stuff just like my mom did.

I don't see it in restaurants much tho.

"I believe you forgot your shingle Doctor!!" - From MASH

Here is my recipe if anyone's interested.

Stuff on a Shingle

1 package dried beef (i.e. Carl Budding style) cut into small pieces
¼ cup butter
3 Tbsp flour
2 cups milk

Melt butter. Add beef and cook until edges curl up. Add flour and stir. Mix in milk slowly until thick. Serve over toast

Cook the flour in the butter for a minute or two so the flour doesn't taste raw.

My mother eats it. She doesnt make it, but she gets the stoffers frozen kind that you just have to heat up and put it over toast. shes says its good.

That's the kind we eat also. I like it! I have never had homemade or had it out in a restuarant. I would probably never order it out somewhere.

not sure if its the same thing but here in the UK we eat 'corned beef' regularly as toast topping or sandwich filler. We also make a 'panachalty'(sp) with it - slided potatoes carrots onions and corned beef, cooked in the oven or casserole for around 1 hour.

This week for our work packed lunch dh and i had sandwiches with corned beef, mustard, tomato, and a spread of mayonnaise. Full of iron and tasty. :goodvibes. Corned beef and onion is a great toasted sandwich filler. Also you can dip it in a batter mix similar to pancake mix and deep fry. Delicious.

You can probably find it on a local army base!!

Good old fashioned S.O.S! I haven't had that in years! I usually make mine with hamburger though rather than chipped beef. Now I know what's for dinner tonight!

My whole family loves it and I grew up with it. Funny, when my DH was in the Air Force we never saw "real" cream chipped beef (or S.O.S.). They always served the fake stuff made with hamburger meat and it TRULY WAS S.O.S.

When we go to Ocean City, Maryland, all the breakfast joints sell it there (and it is SOOO good). They also make scrapple.

In fact, there is a breakfast place there called the "House of Chipped Beef." Our local IHOP also makes it.
