i told dh when we move next year i'm hoping to find a nice 'purple' state. :teeth:
I moved from Northern California to Arkansas almost five years ago. AR has a legislature that is 85% Democrat, only one of the state wide offices is Rep, there are 2 Democrat senators and all but one of the U.S. Rep are Dems, but it has voted Republican in the presidential elections except when Clinton ran. Kind of purplish?

Unfortunately most of those local Dems. are of the old South variety and would not be considered liberal by anybody. Many of the local Dems. are pretty reactionary and still haven't quite gotten used to the fact that blacks are real people. You'd be shocked at how many blacks and gays in AR are Republicans.

yes, what a great poll to show how our country is divided, no "moderate" option :sad2:

What a snotty answer! For heaven's sake, it's throwaway poll on a Disney message board! :sad2:

Frankly, I actually find it a bit refreshing when people are forced to take the fencepost out of their posterior and make a choice!

I don't think there's anyone here to who doesn't understand that political beliefs exist along a spectrum. Still, most people fall somewhere to the left or right of center. I don't know anyone who is truly neutral on everything, yet it's amazing how many people feel the need to equivocate and refuse to identify their political beliefs. I suppose "moderate" offends less people, but it's kind of insipid in my opinion.

You are welcome to make your own poll and it can have all the options that you want. :cool1:

I hate to label myself but out of the two I'll pick Liberal. I'm Liberal on social issues plus the Conservatives spend way too much money. :)

I consider "moderate" a valid answer, and neither fence sitting or insipid. Taking myself as an example, I'm for the death penalty, but feel the court system needs a huge overhall in regards to capital cases because waaaay too many inocent people have been discovered (fortunatly most were exonerated prior to execution). A true liberal would be against the death penalty, period, and many conservatives I personaly know don't feel the current system has any problems and no real changes are needed. My position is squarely in the middle, and thus "moderate". I could name a dozen more positions I consider myself moderate on. But most conservatives would call me liberal, so when given no other choice, I go with the "liberal" lable.

It isn't a snotty answer at all. One big problem with people in politics and the media is they're trying to tell everyone to choose sides. You HAVE to be liberal or you HAVE to be conservative. then we hear "you're either with us or against us" and all kinds of similar phrases from our current government.

People CAN see the advantages and disadvantages of both sides and of representatives on both sides.

If we are merely led by labeling people then it will no longer matter what the left or right does in goverment because people will blindly vote for whichever side they're supposedly on.

Insipid? No, I am able to think for myself and not be labeled or put on a "side"

Her reply was snotty, but yet calling moderates "insipid" isn't? :confused3

Moderate doesn't mean neutral, it means having varying political beliefs that fall on both sides of the aisle. :)

I agree with ChrisFL and consider myself a moderate as well. I would be a full fledged conservative if not for abortion, gay marriage, and this "war" on terror.

Conservative stuck in a liberal state :)

Conservative on almost every issue (but liberal on gun control). :)

I'm closer to a Moderate as well. I think I can only be considered slightly to the right of center. I am a supporter of the war - but when all is said and done I don't think that is a left-right issue. But I am not strictly pro-life, I actually have no real opinion on gay marriage, I am a strong supporter of public education and I do think the government does belong doing things that many conservatives oppose strongly. I'm not a libertarian so I don't have any heartburn with strong anti-smoking laws. I don't think that most gun-control laws violate the constitution or are otherwise bad. But, I don't think the separation of church-and-state means that religious people ought to be somehow forced to "keep it to themselves". I think progressive tax laws are inherently immoral but that if you cut taxes to the federal government you probably need to raise taxes at the state level because things actually cost money to get done.

Point taken. Perhaps "insipid" wasn't the right word to choose. I'll have to try to think of a better one to convey what I mean.

To me, moderate does mean neutral. In my experience, I find most people who label themselves "moderate" (and it is another label ;) ) are really people who tend to pick and choose among viewpoints traditionally considered "liberal" or "conservative". It's as if they do an accounting "Well I have liberal views on 3 issues and conservative views on 2--I guess I'm a moderate." To me, that doesn't mean moderate.

I understand that others might not share my opinion. I'm happy to agree to disagree! :)

Ok, I guess we'll agree to disagree. To me, what you describe is moderate. Neutral, IMO, would be not having any stance on any viewpoint.

Socially liberal, fiscally conservative, although the current regime bears so little resemblance to anything traditionally known as conservative that I don't want to say anything that aligns myself with them at all.

Libertarian is a viable third option not listed in the poll.

I am a moderate leaning more towards conservative than liberal. It doesn't work very well in Massachusetts!
