Are you breastfeeding a toddler?

Hey MDC moms! Maybe we need our own Disney-lovin/Dis tribe over there?? ::MickeyMo
I was thinking that!! Please don't post the link, MDC doesn't need any more trolls :)

Hi LuLu, :wave2: I get your point.

Ok Gotalovethem. Maybe I can help. I had the same issue with Lily. I think she was 9 months old. (I remember because I was at WDW in May.) and she had new teeth. It was't that she was nursing with her teeth or bitting while she nursed. It was just they kept getting in the way. Well it hurt, and I grined and beared it because she wasn't bitting. It ended up rubbing a hole (or 2 ) in my nipple. Then it hurt like hell. So I had to stop nursing on that side as much as I could and let it heal (used Lanoish on it.)

What did I learn from this mistake? If it hurts make them stop. That is the only why the baby can learn not to do it that way. They figure it out. Let them nurse again, but take them off and say that hurts. Lily figured it out somehow. :thumbsup2 I just had to let her know what not to do. She didn't know what she was doing wrong, these teeth things in her mouth were all new to her. She was not trying to hurt me. It took about 2 weeks to heal. In the meantime I changed my postion and started on the other side each time.

Now she a full mouth of teeth, and it doesn't hurt at all. Belive me if it hurt I wouldn't be nursing a 2 year old. (I need to new count down clock.)

Ok, it is late, and I can't sleep. I really shouldn't post after 11:00 pm. I have a hard enough time making sense during the day. Grammar and spelling police be kind. ;)

for me when DS's started growing teeth it was uncomfortable... it didnt quite hurt... it just was different after a few min I would translate the sensation as pain but in truth it wasnt pain... it was just a new sensation..

anyhow after a week or so it stopped feeling odd and went back to normal, or perhaps my normal changed

just make certain you translate the sensation correctly kinda like labor often the feelings are so new and unusual that we put them in a language we better understand and call it pain when really its a whole new thing...

wow I shouldnt post after 11 either
julie

I had a similar problem with both my boys when their teeth came in. I found that when they latched on, if I gently pushed just a little bit more of my nipple into their mouth, it did not hurt. It made it so that those two front teeth rested in a slightly different spot on my breast and after that I didn't have any problems at all. The sore spot will heal eventually and "toughen up" a bit so that it no longer hurts.

that is for sure, but atleast if a troll posts there and it's reported it gets taken care of fast!!! We don't have to keep looking at it.... oh how i do love MDC.

I just want to say that breastfeeding Moms are the best!

But please remember that not all of us are successful breastfeeders and that there is an entire community out there of Exclusively Pumping Moms who care just as deeply about providing their children that precious milk.

I have a preemie with feeding issues (NG tube for weeks) and I exclusively pumped for her for over a year. I pumped up to 8 times a day (no sleeping through the night for me until almost a year old while weaning myself), at work (full time), on airplanes, two trips to Disney (God bless those baby care centers), in bathrooms, women's locker rooms, in moving vehicles, etc. etc. etc.

If I could sustain the momentum, I'd still be pumping for her at 15 months old.

Afterall, BREASTMILK IS BEST!

Hello.

I am a proud nursing mama of a 19 month old whirlwind toddler. I am hoping to get a good response from any other breastfeeding mamas of toddlers. I know there are a lot of you, because when I went to WDW last November/December, ALL of the babies nursing in the baby care center were over 12 months old! :thumbsup2

So, who else is breastfeeding an older baby/toddler?? Have any tips or experiences to share about nursing in WDW or elsewhere?

P.S. I am not looking for opinions about whether or not it's appropriate. The research is VERY clear that breastfeeding past one year is nothing but beneficial (healthwise, socially, emotionally, etc.) so long as both mother and baby want to continue. I am also not interested in whether others find it appropriate at WDW. :rotfl: I'm sure I'll get a few of those opinions, anyway! :rolleyes1
I nursed my son till he was 2 1/2 but we were not brave enough to go to Disney with a toddler! It wasn't the breastfeeding at WDW that scared us it was the toddler meltdowns we were freaking about LOL so you go girl!

I have a co worker (WIC office) that has been excusivly pumping for the past 9 months of her sons life, she had about only me ( the WIC offices Breastfeeding Peer Counselor and IBCLC to be) and her husband for suport, but her son was born 7 week early we tried for weeks to get him to breat but it just wasn't happening after him being in the NICU for 8 weeks with a nurse putting that bottle in his mouth.

Yeah, it's tough. It's a battle. But when you have a baby in NICU there is constant stress and worry and I, for one, didn't think straight otherwise I would have insisted on more skin to skin time.

My only other regret right now is that I didn't continue for another 13 months. But I tried my very best and until I found groups on the internet, had NO IDEA that there were other mothers out there who EPd. Honestly, I just felt like a huge failure because I couldn't get breastfeeding to work. The stares I got when pulling out a bottle from complete strangers and the comments I'd get from people being judgemental like I wasn't doing what was best for her. Meanwhile, they have NO IDEA how hard I was workign to provide her my MM.

I believe that breastmilk is VERY beneficial even into the toddler years and is far more beneficial than cow milk will ever be.

CRSNDSNY, you are my hero (and more importantly your child's). :cheer2: :worship: What a wonderful gift to give your child. Sometimes things (the birth of your child and INCU) don't work out like we plan them. You were really committed. How wonderful!

I have a friend who could not get breast feeding to work for her and DD. She pumped for 3 months. After that amazingly enough the baby latched on and she continued to breast feed this child until the day she came home from the hospital with her 2nd baby. Her milk had changed and her DD stopped on her own.

I had major problems getting my oldest to nurse too. (she had no birth or heath issues.) I worked darn hard at it, I was prepared to pump too if I had too. We persevered and by 3 months was doing great. I think that is one reason I am an extended nurser. It was something I worked hard for and am darn proud of. I wasn't going to give it up before DD was ready.

I pumped for both ds1 and ds2 4x a day while working as a teacher and that was hard enough. Mommas that exclusively pump just rock in my book!!! You are awesome! And so dedicated!

Exclusive pumpers are amazing! I had to pump for my first child b/c she had a very hard time getting on the breast (diagnosis was a weak suck and we used the SNS to get her enough milk until the suck corrected itself). Pumping was so hard for me. I so very much admire your dedication to mama milk!

I won't even address the troll except to say that why the heck would someone think that all of a sudden, at 12 months, the milk which is the perfect nutrition turns into nothing and milk meant for a baby cow becomes best nutrition? :confused3 :lmao: :rolleyes1 My children do drink out of a cup, but they drink water out of a cup. We do not drink cow's milk. Occasionally for a treat, I might give them some chocolate soy milk. Out of a cup-to clarify.

MDC mamas I'm off to start that thread in FYT

hope to see some of you there :thumbsup2

We are a totally dairy-free family, as well. And for those who may be lurking and wondering...NO, breastmilk is NOT a dairy product! :lmao:

Question: If breastfedding toddlers and preschoolers is so "natural" why do we need 12 pages and almost 200 posts patting ourselves on the back for doing it?

First, :thumbsup2 wow.. it takes a lot of dedication to pump!
Second, I always just assume that EP moms fall under the blanket of 'nursing moms' because it's breastmilk..

I had to pump for my first child and I was so thrilled that I had a much easier time the second time around and was able to nurse. Pumping is HARD!

Where do you get the kid sized slings?

I got mine from the MDC trading post, but there are a few WAHMs that make them on e-bay. I bought one for my niece on e-bay and I think the seller was something like shannonmomto4 ? Or something very close to that. It was beautifully made :)
