Are you an Auguster?

/
Warning to all Augusters! It is hot as heck right now! BRING FANS!
I'm glad you had fun. Hot, sweaty, fun!

It is humid in DE now too, but I KNOW what Florida summers are like & nothing compares. (I had friends from Phoenix who were going in August one year who couldn't understand why I thought they might be uncomfortable when they lived in 100 degrees for a good part of the year.... that is until they got back. They said even their sweat felt hot & they've never felt so yucky in their lives. Welcome to Florida -showers are a waste of time.

3 questions:
1. how did you beat the heat?
2. how crowded were the parks? (aka your estimate of wait times in the afternoon for popular attractions?) My husband keeps insisting he wants to be able to relax and not rush in the mornings & I keep telling him to at least read the boards to understand that each extra hour you sleep in translates to several hours of waiting in line in the Florida heat for each ride. Burn thru the park in the am & spend the afternoon in the waterparks or hotel pool (my vote), or napping. I reminded him of our trip to Busch Gardens VA last year over Easter where we waited over 2 hours in line for a single ride and then asked him to add the hot sweltering heat of the Florida sun in the summer. I'm asthmatic & he's diabetic...who's going to last the longest? (the 8 year old gets my vote) This helped him think about it at least, but I could use some help waking him up ----any suggestions?
3. rain ponchos. did you need them? Was the weather so unpredictable that you needed them even on days that called for sun most of the time? He is a weather channel fan & will check it frequently and will only agree to ponchos if it is absolutely called for. (this is another sticking point with him on what we need to carry with us. I say they only weigh a few ounces..why not be prepared?)

He is Mr. Consumer Reports and needs to see it in writing or at least several reviews b4 he believes it, but I don't want to wait for 2 days into the trip for him to finally realize he needs to be commando in the morning in order to chill for the rest of the day. This is probably our one and only trip to WDW in this decade, and I want to make the most of it.. especially since the parks close early while we are there (8/21-8/26).

Allie I didn't know you had this thread going. My names not on that list.. I'll be there 21st to the 29th....

This year, the heat beat us! We were 10 minutes late to MGM opening, and waited 20 minutes in line to get to the RnR FASTPASS machines!! The crowds were Easter-large! We jumped from gift shop to rest room when a cool respite was required. The amount of sweat flowing from everyone was startling! Even the kids agreed when we decided to leave at 2! It's impossible to have fun waiting in those lines in that heat! We've done August before, but later in the month when the crowds were much smaller. Won't do it again! Today we are trying a new strategy. We are beating the heat by spending the day, 4 hours so far, in the ER waiting for my 6 yo DD to be seen. She had a nasty fall into a marble window silln resulting in a large wide cut on her hip and a little difficulty walking. After sitting so long, she now knows the true meaning of bored, and is walking just fine! Don't try this on your vaca! Make the most of your trip!

my family and i always go in late august. and even though it is hot (which is expected) the lines seem to be shorter because some kids are already back in school!

just thought id let you know

Long as the hurricanes stay away I will be ready to deal with the heat.
Hot here in Pa.:cool2:
Aug. 26th Sept. 2nd Can you say free dinning!

I am looking at the weather too. T:scared: Been tracking that TD headed towards the carribean. If it continues its path, it should be gone before we leave.:scared1:

Swalke6, I am going to try to answer your questions for you as best I can. I haven't been to WDW in August, but their temps seem to be about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than ours and we are at 104 degrees or with heat index about 112 degrees today in Central Alabama. I am looking forward to getting to WDW and it being that much cooler.

Freeze bottles of water at your resort, if you can and take them with you to the parks. Get to the gate at least 30 to 60 minutes before opening time, then when the gates open go ride the most popular rides first. Go back to your room about 1:00pm until about 4:30pm, then go back to the park until closing. That is what we did in June. We made ADRs for restaurants inside the park before official park opening and then we were finished before the crowds even made it into the park. During the time that you are supposed to be there is probably a slower time, since most children have already gone back to school in the south (at least AL and GA kids have). We walked onto most rides. The longest line we saw was for Peter Pan at MK and we didn't want to ride that anyway. Space Mountain had a pretty long line as well as Splash Mountain, again I don't ride those either.

It is iffy on the ponchos. August is not the rainest month in Fl, June is and it rained twice while we were there both times about 3:00p to 4:00p and it lasted only about 30 minutes and it wasn't even a downpour. Usually the rain will cool things off a bit.

The attractions that the line is in a covered area were pretty cool. I carried a hand held fan that I got for $0.75 at Party City and I carried a wet wash cloth from the resort and kept it in the cooler with my ice cold water, sure felt good midday. The water was melted just enough by then to be really refreshing.

I say if DH can't get his bu** in gear go without him. I am not one to get up early except when we got to Disney, then I am up at the bu** crack of dawn and ready to go in a matter of minutes.
