And, separate from the poll, what does a family membership cost for your Y?

We have a family of 4, and it lets us use 5 different local YMCAs, and it is one that has the Away at the Y program, as well.... family of 4 with no discounts is $1020 a year

No, the ones around here aren't close enough that I think we'd get our money's worth.

Our YMCA charges monthly, by automatic bank withdrawl only:

New Member Rate
Youth (to 18): $12.00
Young Adult (19-23): $25.00
Adult: $46.00
Senior (62+): $34.00
Single Parent Family: $50.00
Family: $61.00

Renewal Member Rate
Youth (to 18): $10.00
Young Adult (19-23): $21.00
Adult: $40.00
Senior (62+): $29.00
Single Parent Family: $43.00
Family: $52.00

Our son is a member, but DH and I are not.

See, we are lucky.... we have 4 really nice ones less than 10 miles from where we live. The closest is just under 5 miles away.... not exactly right next door, but when we go, we go for several hours usually.

We have been Y members for as long as DH and I have been together. We pay $20/month, but that is because I am a sub for the dance program.

WE have a family membership and it is $912 per year, or $76 per month. My work pays for half each month so it is a great deal for us. :thumbsup2

We are and I believe it's $79 a month for our family membership. Might be $76 (it's automatically deducted each month).

We have a really nice Y. Before it was built, we were not members of any Y - they just weren't that nice.

Wow you guys have good rates. I looked mine up because I knew it was pricier. $150 joining fee and $120 a month, family rate.

With no kids, it would be $150 to join and $79.50 a month for an adult couple.

I know we have a $75 joining fee.... I let our membership lapse, and they wanted to charge me the $75 ( I would have paid ).... but one lady walked by and told the woman who signed me up that they never make previous members pay the $75 unless the membership has lapsed for 6 months, even though the policy is a 2 month lapse.... and I was 2 months and 8 days.

And the lady behind the counter said she thought it was about $100 discount to pay in full.

ETA: Bah! I just did the math..... exactly the same paid in full or monthly.... $85 a month..... though they do have some kind of family plan for $53 a month with less things available, or you need to pay to get in the classes. Pretty much all classes are included in our rate.

Ours family membership is $68 a month, but I have 2 kids in afterschool programs there and it cuts the afterschool rates by $20 per kid per week.

I think we pay $76 a month for a family membership, but since it is automatic deduction, it could be a little higher. Usually, DW does not go (she uses the gym at work), but I go 3-5 times a week (on average - some weeks, not at all, and sometimes 6 days a week), and they have free child care, and member discounts on the preschool program, swim lessons, etc.

$60 something a month I think for a metro membership in the STL area..

Love it.. Hit the gym every morning at 5am...:upsidedow

I teach at mine -so I pay 20/month for my family membership

Otherwise it would be 80/month to go to all the Ys in the area

If you want to join a satellite Y only that doesn't have a pool it is less

Yes, we're members of the YMCA because my DD is on the swim team. There are 4 local YMCAs and we also can participate in the AWAY program. The rate is a $50 initiation fee plus $65 per month for a family but only my DD and I use the membership.

When I was a kid my family were members of the YMCA. I haven't stepped foot in one since I was 14.

I looked into the Y when I was shopping for gyms but they just couldn't match the regular gyms when it comes to free weights or the machines I use.

It doesn't hurt that my insurance pays for both of the gyms I belong to which is the only reason I actually belong to two.

Most of my friends with kids do belong but that is mostly to get the kids into the sports leagues and swimming classes.

Ours caters to seniors. We have a huge senior program, because they get their memberships free through their insurance. Note, I'm not a senior.

We pay $76.00 a month. Dh works out there almost every day of the week since he got diagnosed as diabetic last April. He lost 65 lbs from doing the treadmill, and is now off his diabetes meds because of his weight loss. Also we send my DD to summer camp there for a few weeks every summer, she loves it!! And DH and I take the adult swim exercise classes which are free. Worth it for us.(and it's 10 minutes away)
