For some reason I'm having visions of Jim Carrey's movie "23". I really dont want to go psychotic and start seeing "23" everywhere!! lol. Although with Disney's marketing, I probably will!

According to the rumor that Tink's Tormentor is referencing, "23" doesn't refer to people's ages. It's a reference to 1923, the year The Walt Disney Company was founded.

Here's the rumor as it was posted on WDWMagic. The original post has recently disappeared, making people wonder if the OP posted something he shouldn't have.

In this case, there is a Company-wide initiative with the D-23 event, as its called. It will be a major push and their hope is to really form a relationship with the true Disney fans.

Essentially people will pay about $100 a year to receive some very cool, exclusive merchandise, CDs, DVDs, etc. They will also be invited to a yearly or bi-yearly (to be determined at the moment) event in Anaheim or Orlando (the first event is scheduled to be in Anaheim). Each Company department will be presenting something unique that Disney fans would appreciate (behind-the-scenes looks at theme park technology, a pre-release screening of a new movie, etc). This convention is expected to be huge, with Disney sparing no expense.

They will be announcing this new program in March.

That makes more since than the age thing, since the site says "Are you 23? Find out March 10". You would already know if you were 23 years old - you wouldn't need to find that out later, so the "23" has to refer to something else.

I had to enter my email, too. I didn't intend to but I keep wondering what on earth it could be about. And I love the idea of a new fan club. Whatever this is for, it's certainly effective marketing!

I did sign up for the email and the D 23 fan club does make sense. A pay for the privilege of having a membership card and you can probably count on most of the "exclusive benefits" would also require further payment , so for the priveldge of paying for the club membership you then have the priveledge to purchase exclusive items or have the priveledge of purchasing your way into exclusive activities. :rotfl: That sounds about right

Of course I "could" perhaps, given the "benefits', be convinced to fork over the $$ ....

Do you think (if it is a fan club) that it will be restricted to US/Canadian residents only?

We usually miss out on all the good stuff over here!

hahahah I LOVED that movie... and am in fact a 23 person... so this should be exciting, ive hear of it being a movie, fanclub, something to do with the destinations, and more stuff like that...

gahh i dont wanna wait that long! LOL. maybe my disneyland trip will yield some clues...

If it does...be sure and report back! haha

Maybe he meant 23 cents. That might be about right for Iger.

There aren't all that many 23-yr olds that are wealthy enough to spend $100 on a membership to anything but perhaps a fitness center. And does this club boot you out once you turn 24? You gotta' hope there is more to this than just another Mickey Mouse Club.

BobK/Orlando

The name of the club will be Club 23... the 23 doesn't mean you have to be 23 years old to join.... :)

It'll probably be something far less interesting, but the Disneyana-type club sounds too good to be true - rather like a return to the old Magic Kingdom Club and Disney Magazine days. Doesn't sound very in keeping with recent internal philosophy towards fandom-oriented marketing though...

Whatever it is though, I'm sure it'll cost us money - which is very much in keeping with current Disney philosophy. LOL

All I know is, I sure don't agree that it would be a DVD release! The use of the words "are you" don't imply that it's a product - it implies something more directly related to you, the guest/consumer. (Whether a club or something related, I have no guess).

The post mentioned above does sound fairly well-informed, but then again it could be a hoax. Those things happen.

Its a viral ad campaign that microsoft made really famous and was extremely successful with on a corporate scale 7 or 8 years ago with the "discovery" of gps coordinates and the campaign that went with it.

They're fishing for email addresses and they'll have some promo at the end.

HERE is a blog where people are discussing the possibilities as well

This post from Brian is very interesting -- I would think this is a valid possibility.
