Are videographers too intrusive?

My DF and I were tossing around the idea of hiring a videographer. His main concern is the videographer being too "intrusive" and having all that equipment around and them taking away from the moment of the ceremony.

I mean, his point is valid. We already have a photographer there, a violinist, and then adding a videographer - is that just too many for an Escape wedding? I could see it being okay if there's a lot of people but maybe they would stick out like a sore thumb. Thoughts?

This is a good question! I think it depends on the videographer. You can talk to them and tell them you don't want it to feel like an intrusion, but then again you may want more than a single long shot of you two getting married -like close-ups, interviews, etc.

I really didn't want one at first, but then the advantages of having a record of the entire day began to outweigh my reservations, plus I found a videographer whose style I actually like. Now it's the part I'm most excited about!

i dont think so. quests from my wedding still when they see the video said "there was a videographer" so i think it is definalty something you will want as a memory

Yeah, I mean - I just don't want them all in my face like "Whoa, I'm having a wedding here?!?!" But, I would like that kind of thing because I can't remember what I did last week nevermind what I said while I was nervous during the ceremony.

We paid a pretty penny for our photographers, so we were hesitant about getting a videographer. We didn't want them to get in the way of the photographers. In the end, I called the photographers and asked if they recommended any videographers they liked to work with. We ended up only getting raw footage for 1/2 the price of a package, because we would just edit our own video (2.5 years later it is still not edited, btw). They all were friends and worked well together, so I'm glad we went that route...

I remember being agitated during my wedding because I didn't see the videographers anywhere and I thought for sure there would be no footage. I was amazed when we got the video and it turns out they were exactly where they needed to be!

Stan from http://www.stvsweddings.com videotaped our wedding on January 3rd. He came to the room before the wedding and got some footage of all of us. During the ceremony, I never saw him. His wife was set up and I remember walking past her (we were at sunset point) but I never remember seeing either of them (or the photographer) during the entire ceremony. After Stan posted our sneek peek on his site, I was really suprised at the good shots that he got simply because he and his wife were virtually invisible!

I second that! I was so nervous about being on film, but I didn't even give it a second thought on the day of our wedding. Other than Stan introducing himself we really didn't talk.There were a couple of times he would be beside us and would ask us a question for the camera but he always did it when we were alone and even then he never had the camera stuck in our faces it was always kinda down to the side, other than that we didn't really talk to him until he was about to leave!

I think that because these vendors do this all the time, they have learned to work around others and make sure they don't stand out. They really try to "blend" in and get their jobs done.
I really don't think you need to worry about it. It's amazing how these people work.

As a videographer, they should be far out of the way. And it is not rude or un expected if you ask them about their style and being out of the way and everything. You are paying a butt load of money, you have the right to ask a butt load of questions.

We had Stan the day after dmslush did -- on the 4th. He was great. We had about 50 people and like everyone else said -- we barely noticed him. He didn't have a lot of bulky equipment - just his camera and it wasn't enormously big either. I think it was definitely worth it.
