Hi ,

Can anyone confirm that $ TC'S are still widely accepted across Disney Property .

This is the way we like to take the bulk of our currency & we always dine on Disney , use a TC and then use the change as our cash .

Thomas Cook said they are no longer widely accepted & we may have difficulty using them .

Thanks

SAM :confused3

Yes, they are. I always take some with me and really don't mind being referred to as "old fashioned" :lmao: but I like to take my currency in various forms and TC's are always one of them.

You can use them at any restaurant, shop and resort onsite. The only place where they said they would "prefer it" if I paid by another means, but would still accept a TC was at the Lego Store at DTD.

I saw an english man using one at the american pavillion at Epcot 2 weeks ago. The cm had to get a manager but they did accept it.

As others have said, TCs are still widely accepted in Orlando and at WDW.

The reason travel agents, such as Thomas Cook, will tell you they are not is because they are trying to encourage you to take their pre-paid currency cards as they earn commission on the sale of those cards. As it is, we stopped taking TCs several years ago and now only take cash and the majority of our currency on a Fairfx card but only because we, personally, find it more convenient.

Luckily, you knew to ask here. Most unsuspecting non-DISers would just blindly believe what they were told and go ahead and buy the currency card.

I must admit I was shocked when she said they began phasing them out 9 years ago .

We really prefer to take mostly cash , we put it in the safe as soon as we arrive and take out daily what we need .

I think the time before last , i took all cash , but last year when i went to get my currency most of the cash had gone , so we made up the balance in TC'S.

Think i'll go for bulk cash & rest TC'S .

The cashier was heavily pushing the card though at $1.54 , she would only offer me $1.52 cash or TC'S.

Done on line reserve today at $1.5350 for cash & tc's so we'll see what she says.

we always take the bulk in T/chqs as well. They are def still used the same as if it was cash. We take mainly $100's and have no problems. HATE the cash cards, just don't get along with them. :)

We have never had a problem using them off site either at any of the Malls/Outlets. Obviously they are never keen for you to pay with a large t/chq for a small cost item. Sterling chq's in this country maybe expensive to process but t/chqs are not as they don't go through the same clearing process so thats why they are still quite popular to use and all the exchange bureaus still offer them. Some of the cash cards you have tobe careful of because they will charge you a 'no use fee' if you have money left on there and you don't use it or top it up in a certain time!

What she said ^^^ :thumbsup2

There is some truth in it so your TA is not telling an outright lie :rotfl: They are less popular now and a bit more of a hassle, but they aren't obsolete! You may find you encounter more problems offsite with travellers cheques, but you certainly won’t have a problem on Disney property

Only place I know they don't accept them is Golden Corral, although I have heard they are reviewing it.

I am surprised they don't phase them out, they must be expensive to process, I have never made a choice to stop accepting regular cheques but over the past couple of years people have stopped using them. I am glad because they cost far too much to process at £1.30 each. compared to a debit card at 16p its a massive difference. Must be almost a year since anyone wanted to pay by cheque now.

Not used TC's for about 10 years now, post office credit card is far easier for me, $1.58 today, hope its even better in July/Aug but you should have no problem with TC's.

On your advice I am doing the same this year, although I am taking currency in various forms as well. Hoping for a good rate too :thumbsup2

Its usually all we use, only use cash for tolls but this year I bought about £400 worth of $ off a customer at $1.60, she didn't spend anywhere near what she expected, worked out better to sell to me at $1.60 than take it back to the TA.

I have never had a problem using them in Orlando but last month I was in Phoenix for 2 weeks with work. I only took $50 cash and the rest in Travellers Cheques. I went to an outlet mall, just like Premium Outlets. The Levis shop assistant didn't even know what they were and took me about 20 minutes to pay for one pair of jeans. The converse shop wouldn't accept and neither would the shops at the Grand Canyon. This could have been down to individual shop assistant I guess. Luckily the hotel would cash $50 a day for me. I just assumed that all of US was the same.

they def took our t/chq in the Grand Canyon shop last October..:confused3 must be down to individual person. By the way how impressive was the Grand Canyon? We went to the South Rim...wonderful:)

I am seriously considering the same also. I have a PO Platinum card which I already use for buying tickets/paying for cruises etc. We have got a few hundred $$$ left on our Fairfx card from last year and am tempted not to top it up but use the PO Credit Card instead this August. I am not sure why I'm so reluctant :confused3 I suppose I just like the idea of knowing all our spending money is there up front - it helps me budget. I am still undecided....

Personally I found the pre paid MasterCard through travelex to be the best deal for us.

You also get £5 cashback per £1,000 through ukcashback, the exchange rate was the best I could find and there was no additional charge for the card, unlike some sites.

Maybe worth looking into? We have always used travellers cheques in the past, but they do seem a bit dated now :) plus I never use cash or cheques at home, always my debit card.

The only trouble with the Travelex card is the non-usage charge. We like to leave money on our card for our next trip but, with the Travelex cash passport, they charge you $3.50 per month every month if the card has not been used for 12 months. For that reason, I will never use theirs again.

I am exactly the opposite, I use credit card so I can keep my money as long as possible. I pay everything last minute, just before any interest/fees are due.
Holiday is due to be paid this Friday, I will Friday evening :rotfl:

We stayed in one of the lodges overlooking the south rim. It was breathtaking. Even better as it was all paid for by work. Was a long drive from Phoenix, 440 mile round trip but definitely worth it. Just wished I had been there with family.

we did the round trip from Vegas by car...my god it was a boring drive...straight road through often bleak scenery for HOURS..but it was just so worth it..it took my breath away. It was the most incredible sight I'd ever seen..Still love the man made Disneyworld though:)

if you want to take all TC`s,you can cash at front desk.there is a daily limit of $200 to do this MIL always cashes hers that way. would just use in shop to get more cashed.or if your spending is totaly in disney you can load your KTTW card with them that way your not carrying them round,if you do this remember not to have charging on the kids cards as they can rack up a large bill in the arcade(have seen many irate Americans complaining about that).just have one card linked to charge

We had similar experiences the first time we went to California

My wife always takes TC's to Florida, whereas I'm a cash and credit cards person, so we did the same for our first trip out west together. The trouble she had using TC's, even in big malls and touristy places, put her off doing it ever again. In half the places staff looked at them as though you'd just handed over Albanian currency, and the even in places that did eventually accept them, they had to call over a manager to put them through which turned even the quickest purchase into a 15 minute ordeal.

After chatting to a number of shop assistants during our waits, we got the picture that it seems that they are still widely accepted in Florida and places that get a lot of foreign tourists (although how much longer for is to be seen), but the rest of the States, where 95% of tourists are probably American, has been slowly phasing acceptance of these out over the past few years.
