Are these good reasons to sell?

With the upcoming changes to the DVC resale rules, I'm feeling an urge to sell our BLT contracts. I just got them last Summer and took 1 wonderful trip to the AKV in a 1BR. We had a great time but my DH and Kids (9,6) are not nearly as into Disney as me. We have an upcoming trip in Nov. and the kids aren't excited at all. Every time I talk about the trip (maybe once a month), the kids say, "Okay, mom, whatever". They're not spoiled, just not so into Disney. We visited in Nov. '09, June '10 and Nov. '10.

It's disheartening being the lone Disney fan in the house and it's finally wearing on me. The kids want to take other trips to national parks and such and I'm all for that.

I'm thinking now is a good time to sell as we'll pretty much get what we paid so the AKV trip was a little bonus (I say little b/c I already paid the dues for my 2011 points).

So, kids and DH not loving Disney and visiting is getting to be more of a hassle than a privilege <--they're good reasons to sell, right? If you've sold, or know of someone who has for that reason, how did they make out? Were they glad to sell?

I know this is an obvious answer but I'm a little sad to be contemplating selling. I already called MS to find out how many points would be in each contract if I cancel the upcoming trips :(
I think it depends on how many points you own but as you've presented it, I'd likely sell and maybe buy a smaller contract or do a small add on then sell the rest.

Trading is not for the faint hearted, especially if you have a narrow time you can travel(ie kids summer vacation) and want a certain area or resort. You need to plan out, even longer than the home preference period in DVC.
It depends on how flexible you are. From a cost standpoint it's pennies on the dollar compared to DVC but there are compromises and risks for those costs.

My partner also is not so much into Disney, but once we are there he still enjoys it. So last time, I offered to go 4 nights to Kidani Village and do non-park stuff only, a real relax vacation, chilling at the pool, have nice dinners, see some things outside Disney and maybe some shopping. On the second day, my friend said "Maybe we could go to AK or Epcot just for a day?" But stood firm :-)

Then we did another 4 nights at Vero.

We are also thinking about visiting Hilton Head soon.

Think you would be money ahead to rent or transfer your points for cash and use the profits to pay for your non Dvc vacations!

My oldest son (10) is not a big fan of theme park rides and Disney. He started to complain about our Disney trips, but now that we are spending more time doing things outside of the parks he is complaining less. Our first few family trips were very park oriented. We were never commando visitors, but our trips now are a lot more laid back. We spend less time in the parks than we used to.

You might try another trip or two spending more time swimming, playing mini golf, renting bikes, etc. before you decide to sell. Or sell some of your points if you have multiple contracts for an every other year trip. Part of the reason we bought DVC is because I want to go once a year. My poor kids are "stuck" going to Disney once a year until they leave the nest. We do other trips besides Disney, though; in fact we are cutting back on Disney a little bit now since we have spent a week at Disney four times in the last two years. We are spacing out trips a little more and cutting back on number of nights.

Disney is reall a strange animal, you get us lovers who can't understand why others don't share our obsession and then you get those who could take it or leave it.

My sons are /older teens/young adults and while they are not crazy about the mouse as I am, they do love going on family vacations, so rarely do they complain.

Have you contemplated changing how you go. For my family since we've been members for 10 years now we seen a bit of a decline at disneyworld so we make it more of an Orlando vacation. We don't spend every day at the parks and we do Universal. we rarely eat on site. 6 years ago, I would have never imagine that.

We also are going now about every 18 months as opposed to annually.

I probably will not sell my membership but I have a small contract so even when the kids totally outgrow it, dh and I will use it.

First of all, sorry that you are in this situation. If I were in the same situation, I do not think that I would sell. I would try to use my points at both HHI and Vero for a while. Both places are awesome. I can't imagine kids not having a complete blast at these places. Another thing that could be fun is spending a week at SSR. You could stay out of the parks and take the boat ride or walk over to Downtown Disney. There is a lot to do there. Have you been to the water parks? I think my kids would be happy going down and just spending the week going to the water parks and Disney Quest. Anyway, best of luck, just thought I would make a few suggestions. Hope that they help.

I don't think I would sell yet. You mention that you bought because you love Disney and maybe went in too quickly. I think its important that you don't try to sell and get out so quickly.

And, the fact that you went to Disney 3 times in one year may be contributing to the Disney'd out feeling. Maybe what you need to consider is what you would need for a once per year trip and sell any additional contracts you have that you would not need.

October is far away and you just got back not that long ago so maybe they need time.

I know when we come home in the summer, everyone (but me) is done with Disney. However, now that we are 6 months from the trip, things are starting to heat up again with everyone.

Good luck!

Thanks DIS'ers! I liked reading through the responses.

I talked to DH tonight about selling and he said, "Do what you want", no kidding. My family likes very unstructured vacations. I like sticking to an itinerary. Maybe it'll take a couple of DVC trips for me to figure out I'm going back and we don't need to go commando. With only one DVC trip down, I may need to give it more time for my DH and kids to appreciate Disney more.

News of the upcoming changes makes me slightly nervous that I won't be able to sell our contracts after March, if needed. I guess we'll have to see. I would love to do an ABD trip and it would be nice to use points.

I was a total commando in our early trips to Disney, we were going to do it all and see it all! Post DVC we have totally slowed down. We take breaks every day and go to a pool near the park we are visiting and swim, eat, have adult drinks all while the kids chill out swimming. The DVC resorts have so many fun things going on at their pools. Our kids love to chill at them, we join the contests, and dance parties! We chill at Community Halls, doing crafts and playing games. I actually like to cook on vacation, I order everything I need and we have family meals! If your husband doesn't mind keeping it, don't sell!

Yes, hold on for awhile, take a non-commando trip and see what happens. We go every other year with someplace else on the off years, we have a timeshare with the royal resorts for that. Our stays at dis have changed dramaticly since owning dvc, in the parks for a few hours in the morning back to eat and hang out at the pool, back to the parks at 5 or 6 for the evening. On some nice days we don't even go to the parks until night time. If we don't see it this time we know we'll see it the next time cause we'll be back, no worries no stress. Try it, you'll like it.

Sounds like you have more than 1 contract.

Can you sell some points and go occasionally with the family. I don't know how you feel about going with friends or by yourself.....but hey....when the mouse calls.....ya know.....

I guarantee that after mom goes to WDW by herself or with friends.....they might see the light of day;)

BTW....my DD was getting sick of Disney....we went a few times a year it seems since she is 4. We haven't been since 11/09 and it feels like a LONG time....Going 4/11.....DD is actually very excited. Maybe they just need a year or so off. You take the next trip yourself.....then bank your points for some time off.
Good luck in your decision.
Kerri

BTW.....You MUST make your next trip with the family relaxing.....NO ROPE DROP....No Alarms..... 1ADR a day.....pool time.....you get the picture. Let them see how nice it can be. This is the whole point of DVC......you will be back no need to rush to do everything....It will be there next time:)

The same can be said for my family. I believe part of beauty of DVC ownership is that you do know you will be coming back and you don't have to try to do everything every trip. I recall in 2008 my daughter saying how laidback our trip was. I wouldn't sell yet, give it some more time. If your family wants to do other trips too, do them. Bank points every other year and then take a big Disney vacation.

I have to say that I understand what you are saying. The first few years I had my contract we went 4 times a year. I was borrowing all the time and finding ways to get to Disney. But DS was young and fun of the magic.

Fast forward 4 years and now DS is saying that he saw a zipper and they don't talk because it isn't really Mickey:guilty: He is growing up and although he loves Disney, it is starting to loose the magic it once held.

DSS is coming to Disney for only the 2nd time in March. He has always held that he is too old for Disney. He doesn't like it much but tolerates my vacation choice.

Vero is lovely, we really enjoy going to beach! Hawaii is opening this summer, so you will two beach options.

But again, I want to selling now but I would take such a loss that I just have to hold out and wait for prices to go get back up to at least what I paid for it back when the prices were sky high. Once prices are back up in a few years, DS will older, I will be selling and we start to take him to Europe and adventures around the world instead of Disney.

Overall I would probably sell in this situation at this time. The kicker is that if you wait, the contract will be worth a fair amount less in 6 weeks than it is right now. That's the incentive against the wait and see. One can always buy back in.

I'm thinking now is a good time to sell as we'll pretty much get what we paid so the AKV trip was a little bonus (I say little b/c I already paid the dues for my 2011 points). :(

When selling through The Timeshare Store, Inc.® typically a buyer pays the dues on the points they are getting for the current year allocation (right now 2011).

Example: You sell a 200 point contract and the buyer is getting 200 points for 2011 then typically the buyer pays the dues on those 200 points and the seller is reimbursed accordingly.

Another example: You sell a 200 point contract but the buyer is only getting 65 points for the 2011 allocation then the buyer only pays dues on the 65 points and the seller pays dues on the other 135 points.

Of course, this can be negotiated between buyer and seller and some sellers to create more interest in their listings will offer to pay all the dues for the current year even though the buyer might be getting all of the current years points.

if you have more than 1 contract--sell some NOW. You will get top dollar before the change. I would then keep only enough points to vacation at DVC every other year. That way, you are not locked into DVC. Trading via RCI takes a lot of work and there are only a few resorts near Yellowstone, etc. and summer is tough to get, so I would not keep DVC to trade more than once every few years. Also, for MUCH less, you can buy other timeshare programs that get you more options. HGVC sells for less than 1/2 price in resales. Worldmark has lots of Western locations that are very good.
If you keep only enough DVC for EOY, your kids might like it more and you can do other things on the off years. Next trip, try doing only a day or so in the parks and try other things--at your ages, fishing at Ft.W, riding bikes at Ft W or on the trail from OKW to SSR, doing crafts and hanging out at the DVC community halls are really fun. Also, try a different DVC each time to mix it up. Pool hop, roast hotdogs and do the sing-a-long and outside movies at FtW or beach movies at BCV. DD(9) likes to rollerblade at FtW (we bring our skates).
Can you tell I have kids the same ages? Older DD (13) is now bored with WDW--but still loves DVC. We did Seaworld instead of WDW one year. At Christmas, we did Harry Potter, Univ. for 1 day to mix it up. Other days, we hung out doing activities at AKV.
If you only have a big contract, then I might think about selling--IF you can get most of your $$ back. If they are not into WDW/DVC at 6 and 9, I think at 10 and 13 it will be even more so.

The boredom with going to wdw seems to be a problem with alot of dvc children according to some of the parents I spoke to by the pool on our last stay. Alot of famlies do multiple stays per year and the kids get burned out on dis. We use to get anual passes to a six flags near us and at first they were great, with alot of visits per year but after a couple of years they were bored and would go only once or twice, now they haven't gone for a couple of years. We only go to wdw every other year and sometimes our kids (4 of them) now ages 18 thru 26 opt not to go because of school or work but when they do go they really enjoy it. When we bought we told ouselves we weren't going to od on dis and it seems to have help keep some of the magic.

We only bought "every other year" points to keep boredom at bay. And our trips now with tweens involve more waterpark days and fewer park days. We still commando a few park days - but honestly, a lot of Disney is now "been there, done that" - we only need to bother with Jungle Cruise once every three trips or so.

When you have reluctant Disney family/friends, you need to tune your travel plans to them. That might mean missing rope drop, or spending more time on meals and less on parks. It might mean hanging by the pool. It may be divide up so people get to experience what they want - and letting your teenager hang by the pool or skip Magic Kingdom.
