I saw this asked as an "etiquette question in our local paper and I thought it would make an interesting discussion. I have a very sensitive nose. I can smell cigarette smoke from the car in front of me with all windows rolled up. Garlic in the morning turns my stomach. So, now that more airlines are requiring you to "brown bag it" if you want to eat, are there some foods that should be consumed in the terminal so as not to disturb your fellow passengers?

Tuna. I cant stand the smell of tuna.

Hot food should be eaten before you board the plane. I think cold food does not smell as much.

I avoid bringing anything with peanuts or peanut butter in case there are people with peanut allergies that it could affect.

Oh, good grief! I can't stand the smell of any kind of nuts - peanuts, walnuts, peacans, hazelnuts. Literally inhaling these nuts can cause death for me.

I'm not about to ask that these items be banned from society, or from airplanes. Wish I could and that they would be.

I personally find BO and bad breath offensive, but I don't think it's possible to regulate persons with those issues from getting on a plane.

Frankly, I don't care WHAT someone eats, as long as they eat it QUIETLY! I can't stand slurping, smacking, cracking, crackling, etc. But I don't have the power to regulate dining manners, so I will have to grin and bear it.

Limberger cheese?

Seriously though- I think that no matter what you bring there will be someone who doesn't like it. When I was pregnant the smell of coffee would put me over the edge as well as a bunch of other foods.

The peanut thing I can get but the airlines serve peanuts.

I am more concerned with the perfumes and colognes that permeate the air. Blechhh.

I actually like the smell of good cologne unless it is yucky sweet. I hate the smell of tuna and peanut butter, even though I like those foods. Doritos can stay off of the flight as well.

Same here. There are some foods that I don't care for the smell, but I wouldn't dream of asking someone not to bring them on board. Whatever the smell is, I can deal with it until the smell has left the air.

I'm with the cologne/perfume poster. I wear perfume everyday but I can't stand the smell of most other people's scents. They always smell too strong, or even worse, too sweet. Blech!

I am multiethnic, but I think taking ethnic foods can get overwhelming for some.

Strong smelling foods like curries or even a subsandwich can get to be too much.

Dh and I took a quicky trip to NYC a few years back, and brought our left over Canergie deli (sp) cornbeef sandwiches on board...

While they were quite yummy, it made the whole plane hungry.

I dont think we will do that again.:rolleyes1

I guess the only thing that I watch out for is what lovetoscrap already mentioned. Peanut allergies can be so severe and I wouldn't want to risk hurting another passenger by bringing on peanuts or peanut butter.

Otherwise I think everything else is fair game. I remember sitting next to a family that brought on cousins subs, and I SOOOOO wanted a cousins sub after that!

LOL, I bring a sub almost everytime I fly!

If it is a long flight, just don't bring something that will make you gassy, like broccoli or eggs. DH was once on a trans-cont. flight (about 4 years ago) and they served eggs for breakfast. He said that by the time they got to LA, the cabin was thick with fart stench.

Tuna. I cant stand the smell of tuna.

You can say that again.

Mix that with a strong purfume or cologne and I'm definately gonna vomit.

I won't tell you that you can't wear purfume or eat tuna but you can't be mad at me when I'm running past you trying to get to the bathroom.
