Hey all,

I just joined up. I've been reading some of your TR's and learning much. I"ve been to both WDW and DLR a few times and I feel I'm pretty good at navigating around the park in an efficient, but fun manner.

Our trip is planned for April 3-8...I know....one of the busiest times of the year, but my girls are getting older and it's harder for them to catch up if they miss school. I've ALWAYS gone during the off season and loved the short lines, but that is not in the cards this time. I'm a bit impatient with 60-90 minute lines so I've done my research on how to beat the waits.

First of all, let me introduce those of us who are going on our trip. There's me...I'm a 46 YO mom to 6 great kids ranging in age from 27 to 10. I've been to WDW 5 times and this will be my 4th trip to DLR. Coming with me are my two youngest. They are the funnest and sweetest girls in the world. There's Rachel, my 12 YO who has been to WDW once and this is her first time to DLR. Then there's Kylie, my 10 YO who has not been to WDW, but this will be her 2nd trip to DLR. In the past, I have taken each of my kids, one on one, to either DLR or WDW, hence the reason why one of my girls has been to WDW but not DLR and one has not been to WDW but will be going the second time to DLR. This time, since they are older and more manageable I'm taking both of them with me.

My husband does not like crowds, rides, or spending money so we never go to either Disney park as a family. He's kind enough to not make a stink about us going...in fact, he encourages us and is happy that he doesn't have to go along. I'm happy too ‘cause though I love him he'd be a complete pain in the watoozee to take on a Disney trip.

We booked our airfare through Delta because we were able to get two of the tickets through my husband’s frequent flyer miles. We will be leaving SLC on April 3 at 11:18 a.m. We will be renting a car because we will be staying at the Hampton Inn in Cypress (6-7 miles from DLR), once again using hotel points for a night or two. One thing that we’ve always missed out on was staying on Disney property. Because my husband travels for work and stays at Hampton Inns, we always use Hampton Inns because we can get some of the nights free. Oh well…money saved.

I’ve pre-booked most of our trip online and saved loads by doing so. I used Mousesavers.com and Ares Travel to get tickets to DLR, Universal Studios and Sea World as well as our character meal.

I bought Ride Max and it’s been fun to play with it. I’ve decided to run the software for non-Fastpass rides and to collect Fastpasses throughout the morning while we are riding the non-Fastpass rides. Then I plan to use the Fastpasses that I’ve collected in the afternoon when the park is busiest. That way I will ride the non-Fastpass rides when the lines are shorter in the morning and take advantage of shorter Fastpass lines in the afternoon. I don’t know how well known it is that a CM will rarely turn you away if your Fastpass return time doesn’t coincide with when you actually return to ride the ride. As long as you return after the first time in your window, they will usually let you on. So I collect Fastpasses all morning long and use them when the lines are longer.

So here’s our plan:

Saturday, April 3 – Travel day

After settling at the hotel, we will drive down to Huntington Beach. We always love the ocean. I could sit and watch it for hours. After spending an hour or so at the beach, we will head to Disneyland Hotel for our 5:30 PS at Goofy’s Kitchen. I’ve heard mixed reviews on this restaurant, but my girls will probably be grown by the time we get back to DLR and I want to provide them with a character meal before they are too old. After dinner, we will head to the parks. I’m not sure much riding will get done as I’m sure lines will be long and Fastpasses will be used up so we plan on watching the Electrical Parade and the Fireworks and then calling it a night because the next day we have to get up early and drive to San Diego to go to Sea World.

Sunday, April 4 – Sea World

I chose Sunday to go to Sea World so we wouldn’t be fighting traffic as much on the freeways. We’ll get up early and drive down and hopefully, be at the park at opening.

Monday, April 5 – Disneyland

We’ll spend the morning in Adventureland and New Orleans Square getting those rides in while lines are short and gathering Fastpasses for SM, IJ and possibly BTMRR if the timing of the passes is right. Then we’ll head to Fantasyland and ride some of those rides. We’ll take a late lunch at Billy Hill and the Hillbillies after which we’ll spend the afternoon using our accumulated Fastpasses, riding the train and monorail, taking pics and browsing shops. To save money we’ll walk to Harbor Blvd. and find a cheap place to eat and then we’ll souvenir shop at World of Disney in DD. Then it’s back to the hotel and bed before 10:00.

Tuesday, April 6 – Universal Studios

We’ll head up to Universal before opening and I’m going to try to upgrade my tickets to Front of the Line passes when I get there. It’s a lot more money, but to me it is worth it not to have to wait in 90 minute lines. If they won’t let us upgrade then we’ll deal with it, but I can’t imagine them not wanting my money. I’m kind of funny…I’ve saved loads of money on tickets and such just to spend it at Universal so I don’t have to wait in lines. In essence I guess I’m not saving much!

Wednesday, April 7 – CA

Since Disneyland opens 2 hours before CA, we’ll spend the morning in Fantasyland riding what we weren’t able to on Monday. Then at 9:30 we’ll head to CA as I hear they open SOC ½ hour early. I’ll have to ask about that when I get there. If they’re not doing that then we’ll stay in DL a little longer and be at CA’s gates a little before 10:00. My strategy is to do the same at CA that I do at DL. I will gather FP’s as I pass the rides that have them and ride the non-FP rides in the morning. We’ll catch the Toy Story parade and head again to Harbor Blvd. for dinner.

Thursday, April 8 – DL and CA

It’s up really, really early as we’ll use our EMH on this day and we’ll spend our time in Tomorrowland and Fantasyland the first hour and then decide what our favorites have been and try to ride them again. I do know that Aladdin is not showing on Monday or Wednesday so Thursday will be our only chance to see that. We’ll make sure we get there for the first show at 12:10 because our flight is at 3:50 and we’ll be needing to leave as soon as that’s over.

I love planning trips because it allows me to indulge in anticipation. It’s almost as fun planning out where we’re going and when as it is to actually do it. Some may not like that kind of regimentation, but you almost have to be when you go to DLR during a busy time of year. My girls won’t be a problem….they trust me because of the great trips I’ve planned in the past.

Well, it's almost here! We leave tomorrow morning! I'm taking good notes and hopefully will be able to help someone planning a future trip. Wish me luck!

Got back Thursday night and I'm working on a trip report. We had a great time, but there are things that I would do differently next time. It was way too crowded for my liking. I'm used to going in the off season and we didn't like the crowds at all. Plus, California freeways are too jam packed to try to go anywhere outside of Disneyland. We went to Sea World and Universal and next time I do Disneyland I'm sticking to just Disneyland and saving the other park excursions for Orlando where it is much easier to navigate around.

Can anyone tell me how you post pics on this. I'm computer illiterate!!!!

Welcome Back! Here are some instructions I posted a while back when someone else asked the same question. I answered as if they had uploaded their pictures to Photobucket first:

I'll just give you the step by step and try to be as clear as possible. I'm on the technically challenged side of things myself, but I found some good instructions. After you upload your picture, click on "back to album" or "return to album." When your mouse rolls over your photo there, a menu appears with 4 codes for the photo. Left button click to highlight the IMG code. Right click to get the menu to "copy." Click on "copy." Go back into your TR and then right click again and click on "paste." The code shows up and then when you submit, your pic is posted.

I hope this is clear enough. If not, we'll try again. ;) But you can't upload your pictures directly to your trip report as far as I know. I opened a Photobucket account just so I could post pictures here. I'm looking forward to seeing yours. :)

I don't use photobucket (don't even know what it is), but I do know how to copy and paste my pics so I will try that first and if that doesn't work, then I might have to join Photobucket. Thanks again! I'll see what I can do.

I don't know how I missed your trip report before, I am on board for it now.

Using photobucket is really easy. I do it and it is totally self explanatory so you shouldn't have a problem with it.

I joined photobucket and downloaded a test picture and it didn't work! I'll keep trying. Is there any other advice you can give me?

Okay, it said to post pics I needed 10 or greater posts and I only had 9 so this post is just to bring my count to 10 so I can try again!

Here is a pic of my girls waiting to load the plane that will take them to Disneyland!

I'm glad it worked for you!! It can be confusing.

Real life has returned and I've been way busy lately. I've almost got Day one done. Will try to get it on here soon.

Night before our trip – April 2, 2010

There were a few times on this trip that I wanted to kick myself in the behind. One of those times was before we even left. I’m doing some last minute packing and preparation and I decide to look over the pre-paid tickets I got to make sure I understand where I’m supposed to go to redeem them. I get out our 2 park combo tickets to Sea World and Universal that I had ordered in early March from Mousesavers.com. I notice in small print that it says “expires April 3”. What???!!!! I had not noticed that before. I went to the website and sure enough, in small print, it says valid until April 3. I’m panicking because I spent over $300 on these tickets which state that they are non-refundable and they were going to expire before we even got there!!! I call the number on my order form and after a bit of them saying they cannot refund them, they tell me that they will refund with a 10% restocking fee if I send the unused tickets back. I send them off hoping that there’s no complications and I end up out $300 dollars. I told them they needed to make the expiration dates more noticeable and large if they were not going to refund. I still have not seen any sign of a refund on my credit card, but it’s only been a little over a week. I’m still crossing my fingers.

Day one – April 3, 2010

The day has finally arrived. Our plane is scheduled to leave SLC at 11:18 a.m. We are loaded and starting out on the road at 9:15 a.m. My husband decides we need the “whole travel experience” so he parks the car in long term parking and makes us wait for the shuttle. I’m a little worried that this will delay us, but he’s a seasoned business traveler so I trust him. We end up being just fine time-wise and go through the security gates at about 10:20ish waving goodbye to my husband and older daughter. We have a tradition of buying Cinnabons whenever we are waiting for a flight so off we go to spend the first $12 of our trip.

Oh how nice. That is one thing I can say for Disney, they have everything clearly posted on the website.

We load the plane at 10:45ish after finishing our yummy Cinnabons. The plane leaves the gate on time, but we end up taxiing down the runway for over 30 minutes! We thought we would never get off the ground. We land right on time and get our baggage and car with no problems.

It was only 1:30ish and we couldn’t check in until 3:00 so we decided to go straight from the airport to the beach. I brought along our GPS (which, BTW, I am totally sold on) and input the address of Seal Beach. We had a lot of fun with our GPS. We ended up naming her Gigi Penelope Stuart. We felt like she was part of the family.

Gigi got us to the beach with no problems. I chose Seal Beach because of some reviews I had read online. I thought Huntington or Newport Beaches would be too crowded with spring breakers and their parking was $15. When we got to Seal Beach we were not disappointed. It was clean and uncrowded and the waves were 2-3 feet. It has a long pier with a cute diner at the end. Parking was only $3. We played in the water as best we could with long pants on. We ended up getting into our luggage and getting some shorts out later. We walked down the pier, which looked like a great place for a morning jog and an evening stroll, and got an ice cream cone. I told my girls they couldn’t get full because we had a PS at 5:30 at Goofy’s Kitchen and they had to be hungry for that.

The pier was pretty long and a nice walk!

We drove to our hotel, which was the Hampton Inn in Cypress which is about 6-7 miles west of DLR. My husband is a business traveler and always stays at Hamptons so he wanted us to stay there to rack up points. Next time I will veto him though and stay at a Good Neighbor hotel. It wasn’t that far of a drive, but by the time we hit all the lights, it usually took 15 minutes or more to get to DLR. There was NOBODY at our hotel. I swear we saw one car in the parking lot and that was probably the car of one of the employees. The hotel was nice and quiet. It served complimentary breakfast. My only complaint was that the hallways were freezing.

We unpacked, changed clothes and then headed for DLR. We parked in DD parking as we were going to go to Goofy’s Kitchen and I knew we would get 5 hours free parking. It was around 3:45 when we arrived. I had to redeem our tickets at a main ticket window so we walked through DD to the main ticket windows. We got our tickets and off we went to begin our Disney adventure. We went to DCA first because I love SOC and I wanted to see what time the FPs were showing. The FPs for SOC were for 8:40-9:40 so we didn’t get them because we wanted to make sure and see the Electrical Parade. I had promised my girls that if they cooperated and got up early every morning so we could get a few attractions in before the crowds showed up that I would get them back to the hotel early so they could sleep every night except our first night which was reserved for Goofy’s Kitchen, the parade and fireworks.

We decided to head to DL and ride HM. I love HM. It is a classic and Kylie (my 10 yr old) had not gotten to ride it last trip because it was closed for refurb. The line was 25 minutes long so we decided it wasn’t going to get any better so we got in line. It was great to be back on that awesome ride. After HM, it was getting close to our PS time so we headed back through DD to GK. We were already pretty exhausted from walking through DD twice, waiting in a 25 minute line and just generally fighting crowds. You can’t walk in a straight line when DLR is crowded. You have to navigate, especially when you are in a hurry.

The girls were already pretty tired and rested while waiting for Goofy's Kitchen

We made it to Goofy’s Kitchen and to my surprise it wasn’t crowded. We did wait about 10 minutes after we checked in. The characters on hand were Pluto, Goofy, Minnie, Daisy, Snow White, Mulan and Chip. They had all kinds of food, which was your typical buffet type food. It wasn’t scrumptious, but it was good. Rachel was acting like she was too old for the character thing and was embarrassed to take pictures with them. One is never too old for Disney characters! With that said, I think this will be our last character meal because they are so expensive and my girls are past the time of really enjoying them.
