My DH is not in a wheelchair but has mobility problems.

I was wondering if any rooms have a disability bathroom? We would like to book a Cat 11 but not if DH will be uncomfortable. Is the bathroom really that small. He can't sit without keeping his leg very straight...

Are there cabins that are more accesible? Are there certain cabins that are close to everything or the elevator to most things?

Anyone here with problems?

Thanks for any info.

There are definately handicapped rooms aboard and i know some are category 11, you're best to check with DCL direct to discuss requirements as i'm not sure on bathroom size , elevator closeness etc

There are several handicapped-equipped rooms on board, including four category 11 rooms, on decks 6 & 7 aft. I haven't been in these rooms, but I believe they have large doorways and a roll-in shower and should be exactly what you need. The category 11 rooms are 7131, 7631, 6147, and 6647.

Hi! My parents have been on 3 cruises and have had the handicapped rooms. My father has Parkinson's and sometimes needs his wheelchair and those rooms are great!! The wheelchair went through the doors easily.

The bathrooms are very spacious and and the rooms are HUGE! We often said all 5 of us could stay in one room. They had a verandah room - which was located at the back of the ship and it was also big - 20 people could fit on it easily and the view was beautiful!! The cabins are close to the elevators - 1 cruise they stayed in a room with a porthole and it was at the front of the ship - this was far away from the dining rooms - they enjoyed eating! Then the next 2 cruises they got a verandah room and those are on the back of the ship - closer to the dining rooms - which they really enjoyed.

My parents did have to provide a medical note from his Dr. to DCL for the rooms but it was no big deal.

Hope this helps - if you have anymore questions, just ask!

Take care-
Jean

Thanks for all the info.

The pics for a Cat 11 look fine and I'm sure we will be ok.

Hi PhotoBearSam - we sailed 2 weeks ago, and my parents were in a handicapped Cat 6 (room 6154) because of my mom's arthritis. Their room was HUGE and so was the bathroom. It had a walk-in shower plus a separate tub. The toilet was up high and had a telephone beside it in case of emergencies. Their room was on the very back of the ship and their verandah was HUGE! There was plenty of room for her wheelchair, and the door to the stateroom is "automatic", meaning you just hit a button from the inside and the door swings open and shut by itself. If you'd like, I could e-mail you some pictures of their room. Just let me know.

I'm glad DCL requires a "doctor's note"...

On Carnival on our honeymoon cruise--we were given a modified room--and didn't need it!!!

I was actually mad about it and felt bad for any of those who need it.

Hopefully these errors don't happen on DCL that ruins someone vacation plans b/c they couldn't get a room for this reason.

I have heard of these rooms being allocated to non disabled cruisers but only when they are going spare , for example near to cruising time.

Yes, about 3-4 days before my March '03 cruise, Disney moved my wife and I from an assigned cat 11 to a wheel chair accessible cat 8. I assume it was because they needed our cat 11 (which slept 4) for another family and no one needed the wheelchair room. Clearly the room could only sleep 2 as there was no couch or pull down bed.

It was great having the porthole but I didn't much care for the bathroom. Though large, it flooded the entire floor with water whenever I took a shower and didn't have much in the way of counter space. It was a large, single bathroom - no split bath. The shower was a roll-in shower with drains around the periphery and more drains next to the door. When the ship rolled even a little, water would slosh around the bathroom, so you didn't dare go in the bathroom in your socks, nor did you dare put anything on the floor you wanted to stay dry.

I also missed having a couch where my wife and I could stretch out and watch TV.

The room was definitely larger than a typical cat 8 and was comfortable from that perspective.

Here's a picture of the room, cabin 6000. I am undecided as to whether I'd be willing to take this cabin again as an upgrade or not. (From a cat 11 or 12, probably would, but from a cat 9 definitely not.)

We had the same problem with flooding on our Carnival cruise--had to resort to quickie showers.

In any case--it was sold as part of the block to our travel agency. They had an agreement with cruise line to not provide the rooms in the block unless specifically requested. They had no takers for this specific cruise so it was clearly an error on the cruise lines part. But glad to here that DCL does not copy the practice except when the room is going to sit empty anyway.

We had a handicap cat 5 room on our first cruise and there was a couch in that one. The verandah was about 4 times bigger than a standard one though it was metal and not plexi glass so I was not happy with that part. The shower really never flooded, a few wet foot prints when you came out but the water drained in there quickly...we also take fast showers so that may have helped. This past cruise we had a cat 6 regular room and I showered most days in the spa,...the water pressure was much better there!
