We are doing the QSDP, but I would like to do 1 character meal for the kids while we are there. Since my 10 & 12 year olds are considered adults, the buffets seem expensive to me knowing how little they will eat.

Are there any character meals that are not buffets?

None that aren't price fixed meals. Some are served family style but your kids will still be charged adult prices.

Garden Grill is served family style.
Akershus has a buffet but is also a la carte.

Have you looked into stuff like Garden Grill? It's family style but not a typical buffet, still pricey but great food and good character interaction for us. Also Ohana breakfast is your typical breakfast fare would they eat there? It's on the cheaper side and another favorite of ours, Cape May which is cheaper then Ohana is another favorite. I don't believe Akurshus is a buffet but could be wrong, it's expensive though. I know you asked for non buffet just pointing out a few that might cost a little less thus making it worth going to.

The Akershus Princess meal is a regular menu meal. As others have said, though, it's expensive- I don't think it would be cheaper than other character buffets, if that's what you're looking for. There is a smorgasbord/buffet-type appetizer selection (actually, the Norway version is called koldtbord), but that's just to tide you over until your entrees arrive :thumbsup2

As some of the PPs have pointed out you have a few non-buffet character choices.

For breakfast - 'Ohana, Akershus and CRT are the ones to choose from. 'Ohana is wonderful and relaxing for a character experience in our opinion. Haven't tried the other two for breakfast.

For dinner - You have Garden Grill, Akershus and CRT. We will be trying CRT for the first time this upcoming trip. Looking forward to it, too. There is just something special about dining in the castle. We have also done Akershus twice for dinner and will be skipping it from now on. Maybe we will try it for breakfast in a few years, but it's doubtful. The two meals we had there in the past were just incredibly disappointing and the food just wasn't very good, at least in our opinion. And as far as the Garden Grill goes.. Love it!! :lovestruc It's our favorite character meal with 'Ohana coming in second. The character interaction and service is top notch. The food has always been good. Cannot wait to celebrate our second daughter's 1st birthday here! We brought our first daughter there last year for her 1st birthday and it was the best meal during our trip. Just fantastic. :goodvibes Hoping our server from last year (Ellyn) is still working there - we're hoping to request her again.

Akershus does cost a little more than most others, but the price of the meal includes a free photo of your party with Belle which is taken just before you are seated. There is a cold buffet for an appitizer which has cheeses and fruit and salads and such, the entree is chosen off of a menu, and dessert is served family style to the table. Lunch costs a few bucks less than dinner so if you are looking to save what you can, that could be an option. However, your kids will be billed as adults.

I don't believe there are any character meals where you pay for what you eat.:sad1:

If you can budget it, I find that the Hoop Dee Doo Review is a pretty good value. All the ribs, chicken and fixin's you can eat (unlimited beer, wine and sangria is also included). Tip is included as well and you get to watch a very corny yet very fun and entertaining dinner show.:thumbsup2

It's not guaranteed, but there is an interaction with Remy (the Rat) at the French restaurant. And if money is an issue, some of the breakfast ones seem cheaper than others (like breakfast at Ohana with Stitch which appears to be $21/adult - and it looks like the Garden Grove bfast with Chip/Dale is similarly priced).

I chuckle when you say your 10 and 12 yr old don't eat much. My 6 yr old DD often out-eats me! When we split dinners out, I have to eat quickly to get 1/2 of the food!

True! My boys can probably out-eat me. I was just thinking that for the 5 of us, it would be over $100 for breakfast!! That just seems crazy to me!

Ya.... nope. I'm not a huge fan of buffets. They have family style meals but they are just as pricey. I think they are worth it for the characters. I think it's the characters you really pay for. If you have the dining plan it's not so bad. Or you can wait in line @ a park to meet them. That's free.

There are several that are not buffets but those that are not are all one price per person. If you are looking for a character meal where kids over 9 can order a child's meal and pay a child's price, there aren't any.

Ohana breakfast, Royal table, Akerkus, garden grill.

Garden grill and O'hana are still family style.

Unfortunately charcter meal and cheap just don't go in the same sentance at Disney, it's really the experience you are paying for, not the food imo.
