Are the hairdryers really that bad?

I've read that a lot of people prefer to bring their own hairdryers as the ones on board apparently aren't great. How bad are they really? I'm starting to pack for our cruise next week and I'm trying not to overpack. My hair isn't too long but it is thick. Will I be okay using the room one or should I just bring my own? Thanks! :)

Yes they are bad. As in, DH could blow at you and get your hair as dry. :)

Yes they are bad. I have very short hair. It does not dry it.
Bring your own. Even the small travel dryers are stronger.

If you are picky, bring your own.
My experience is only with 7604 on the Magic, and THAT hair dryer was a little too hot, and a little too powerful. I should note that DD at the time had long, very very very very very thick hair, and it dried her hair faster than anything she has ever used, and almost burned her scalp. But apparently all the hair dryers are not the same.
However, as I have posted before, I think some Disney cruisers have flame throwers, not hair dryers at home. :rotfl2:

My issue isn't as much with the drying time or heat level (although that leaves something to be desired, but is expected in hotel dryers)... I hate the way the intake vent sucks my hair right into it and I have to keep stopping to yank it out. My hair is longer than shoulder-length, although not very, very long... this has always been a problem for me and drives me bonkers! (And it HURTS!!)

I bring my own hair dryer everywhere I travel now. I always try the hotel dryer for a minute or two, just to check, but the results are the same...

I didn't find it too hot. It was adequate. It wasn't wonderful. It wasn't horrible. Does my hair dryer from home work better, yes! Does the Disney dryer work as well as other hair dryer in hotels, probably. I used it twice. I did bring mine from home. When crunched for time, I used mine from home. When we had plenty of time, I used theirs.

But also keep in mind, I hate drying my hair! I dry it for 5-6 minutes tops. Wherever it is at that point, it's done.

I'm in the minority...I thought they were fine. Again, not what I am used to at home but no complaints. I have shoulder length straight hair and it was no problem at all. They only issue was that the dryer handle got a little hot but didn't keep me from using it.

It is a very weird dryer where the box is hooked to the wall and there is a tube connected that you use to dry with. I think if you use a dryer just to dry your hair you would be fine. I use mine with a round brush to style as well as dry so the DCL dryer does not work for me.

Here is a photo:

I personally have no problem with the hair dryers, but as a guy, I don't use it for very long anyway. My DW uses them and they're okay, but when our DD is with us she has to use one we bring. We've found that bringing our travel blow dryer is a good idea anyway. If there are several of us in the stateroom, one person can use the dryer in the bathroom and someone can be drying their hair at the desk.

Related question: if I was to bring my own dryer, would there be an outlet in the bathroom to plug it into? The plug is one of those bulky ones with the test buttons on it.

The only outlet is by the desk so no - you will not be able to dry your hair in the bathroom if you bring your own hair dryer. There is a mirror there though. desk We bring a power strip so that we can also plug in our phones/iPods/etc.

I have very thick shoulder length hair which I wash every day. I've never had a problem w/ the hair dryers, and can't imagine lugging my own from home.

Hair dryers are fine if you're not picky. In 3 cruises, 3 females in our family, we've never carried our own. Save the room in your suitcase for something else. :thumbsup2

I have thick hair and have never had a problem with the dcl hair dryers. Like an above poster, I can't imagine having to pack my own.

I have thick long hair and it was fine for me and I am pretty vain! :lmao: Sure my ionic would have worked better but I didn't really want to drag it with me.

I love the photo.....such a reminder of how it looked like a vaccuum!! hee hee :rotfl2:

As others have stated, I found it adequate. Not great but useable. With all the baggage and weight restrictions when flying, I don't want to waste an ounce on something like a hairdryer when I can make do with what is available.

 I have thick and short hair which I wash every day. I've never had a problem with the hair dryers which bought on board, Lugging hair dryers from home is so trouble. :cool1:

I have short hair, and do not have any problems with the hair dryers aboard ship--but, I've cruised a lot, so I am just more used to them. DH can't stand the wall-hung ship hair dryers (go figure). On our last cruise aboard the Magic, we were pleasantly surprised to find that there is a "regular" blow dryer provided in the suites, as well as the wall-hung version.
