Are the buses too dangerous?

The only thing I really didn’t like about WDW was the bus service. Some look at them as part of the “Magic” but they were the worst part of the trip. When the bus was not crowded it was actually a nice ride and enjoyable but when it got crowded it was a nuisance and seemed very dangerous. It seemed as if some nights the bus driver would try to see how many people he could fit behind the “yellow line”. Leaving DTD one night we filled our POP to the max. We couldn’t move if we tried. Can you say “Sardines”? We then left and went to the market place pick up and added more. The bus driver came over the intercom and said now come on guys I see more room in the back and I’m not making another trip. This was uncalled for and was very dangerous. It seems that something should be done. Does anyone feel the same way?

I so agree. There is suppose to be a legal limit on the amount of passengers on a bus but WDW seems to feel in this area they are above the law.

Last year we were in a bus that was so crowded we couldn't move. The bus driver kept saying move back, move back let's get some more people in.

On one trip, I stood my ground and refused to move back anymore. Moving back would have been too dangerous for the little fellow behind me(about four years old). The poor thing would have been stuck between his mother(about 400lbs) and me(about 145lbs) if there would have been an accident.

I don't mind moving back a little but we were like you said "sardines".

I threatened to write a letter to the transportation board but never got around to it. Now with gas prices being so high I am afraid that they will stick more and more people aboard each bus. I see a tragic loss of life occuring one of these days because of an accident and not enough time for people to leave the bus.

You've obviously never ridden the public transit system in any major metropolitan city.

The way I look at it... The more people in the bus they less jostleing you will feel.

I never thought of it as any more of a safety issue than schools buses kids ride on every day.

Call me crazy but the smell of bus exhaust (when not at disney) bring back happy memories of Disney world. Not because the smell is so pleasant, but because the bus rides for me was relaxing and fun.

I dislike the new buses so much for just this fact. Fewer seats and more people standing. I have also witnessed the rude bus driver who threatened not to leave until EVERYONE on line got on the bus. I am sure it was his orders but it was a jarring thing to hear when you are so used to DW cm's being so very nice.

Being a large lady with balance issues I either leave the parks early or, if we stay until the end, I slowly saunter to the bus stop to avoid the long lines and crowded buses. If by chance I get there and there are long lines I sit and wait until a less crowded one comes along and I do NOT get on even if threatened.

BTW, am I the only one who thinks the drivers speed up th e more people they have standing? I hold on for dear life sometimes even when seated. I comfort myself with the fact that I am providing a soft landing if someone should fall.

Slightly Goofy

This is why I won't go to Disney without a car. I've been "sardined" too much here on the T in Boston to put up with it on vacation.

I have joked many times while on a Disney but that it is the wildest ride in the Disney parks!!!

I so agree! That was the one thing I hated about our trip last year, even though we drove, we thought we would use the hotels bus, that we did ONCE, and that was more than enough. Well worth paying to park and have our own vehicle!! Especially if you have stroller, or very young children.

That's the very reason why we drive to each Park, it's free parking! (if you stay in Disney's resorts)

Look at this a Tarheel and Wolfpack all on the same post (see Disney does bring people together :) )

Oh and NC State I'm in Clayton

A few years back, we happily used the buses without a second thought. We'd park our car and it wouldn't move for the duration. But over our last several trips, the buses have truly become the transport of last resort (pun sorta not intended). They've become a real pain to use - long waits, crowded, slow, snarky drivers. And they seem dirtier than in the past. No magic here.

Frustration with the buses was one of the reasons we joined DVC at an Epcot area resort. We can walk or boat to two parks, and we mostly drive ourselves to the other two.

That's what I was going to say! :rotfl2: If you don't want to stand because it's "too dangerous", then wait for the next bus. As long as I can get onto the bus I'm happy. It drives me nuts when people won't file in all the way to the back.

I work i n Albany, the capitol of New York State. All our busses are just like this. I've taken the busses here for 24 years.

Probably the later it gets, the more people Disney will pick up. If they didn't pick up so many people, you would have all those people complaining that the bus driver wouldn't take them. People will complain either way.
I would much rather be sardined in the bus, on the way back to my resort, then to wait in a boring line for another 45 minutes. And what if it was the last run of the day and there was just 8 more people in line?
What would you do?

Me, too! I always wondered if I was the only one who felt that way. The bus exhaust smell always makes me think of WDW.

I think my arms have finally shrunk back to normal length. I am not the tallest person in the world and had to hang onto the bars overhead while they made as many turns as possible.lol I felt like my arms were several inches longer by time we would get off the bus. I wish they had a strap or something for shorter people like me.

Disney isnt the only one that likes to pile people on. We went to Colonial Williamsburg and they piled us onto the bus as well.

Most large companies with fleet of cars and and cities usually have contracts with gas companies that allow them to lock into a gas rate. Thus, while we might be paying $3.00 at the pump Disney might only be paying $1.50 and very well might be paying for their gas at that amount for the next 2 or 3 years.

Gas prices should be a non-issue in this case.

And I agree, most people who complain about the 'sardine' effect of Disney busses probably have never ridden public transportation in a large metropolitan.
