really unavailable or just blocked off for higher rates? How can you tell?

If the flight has available seats, then the lower priced seats are just blocked off. If the flight was sold out, there would be no seats available at any price. JMO

simzac gave you the correct answer.

After you put your flight request in it returns all flights for your dates. If you scroll down below the flights and read what is there it says this

Unavailable indicates either the flight is sold out/full or the fare is not valid for the travel dates you selected.

I'm sorry, I understand what unavailables are and have read the page....that is why I italicized the REALLY Some days the red unavailable is there, and some days not. I am trying to decipher if SW is holding out fares or if anyone called and the CSR said, " oh the seats are limited" already for the summer months.

I called (whining lol) the day the recent fares were announced.

Rep told me they weren't offering those specific fares - had nothing to do with availability.

She checked the fares & they were the same as on-line fares. Interestingly, the fare went UP even more the next day...guess I got a bargin

Something interesting is that the morning nonstop flight I was watching had "unavailable" on it right after the fares increased last week. However, either yesterday or today the "unavailable" disappeared but the fare is still just as high. It really makes me curious......I did go ahead and book with AirTran but I still check SW constantly because I'm dying to know if the flight I was interested in is going to go down.
