Are people in your area friendly?

People are incredibly friendly out here in the Dakotas, so much so that this Massachusetts girl still suffers from culture shock 5 years later. I still can't get a handle on chatting it up with complete strangers just because you're standing by them in a checkout line or direct questions without inquiring about one's opinion about the weather first being offensive! don't get me wrong, I LOVE the people out here, but every once in a while I'd like to just run an errand without it becoming a social extravaganza again.

If you are friendly around here, people look at you kind of funny and back away.

Hmmm....maybe it is just my experience. I find that when you are friendly people are generally friendly back no matter what part of the country you are in.
I've been to parts of this country where they claim to be friendly and are clearly not. I would list examples, but I feel it was more the individual people I ran into than the entire area. I've visited areas that are allegedly rude, but found the opposite.

As for my area, it depends on the individual. Some are, some not. And I have days where I just don't feel like making idle pointless chit chat and just want to get my business done and move on...and other days I'll engage anyone in friendly banter smiling and waving.

In my community I think that people are fairly friendly, but I'd say that it's somewhere in the middle when out in public (ie, in stores, etc) and not so friendly when driving. I wouldn't say that everyone is unfriendly when in their cars, but I think a lot of people assume they will never see the people again so don't worry if they cut people off, etc.

I live an area with an unfriendly reputation, but I think my neighborhood is one of the friendliest places I've ever seen. There are a couple of grouches on the block, but most of us who live here are very social.

I don't think so now but when I first got here back in the 80s, it was. Atlanta has become too transient and touristy and the people have no sense of community.

But compared to Brooklyn, it's DOLLYWOOD!!

I think that in some cases, people are simply reserved, and that is being taken for unfriendliness.

I don't consider myself a rude person overall, but I don't walk around with a smile on my face 24/7, waving and saying "hi" to every person I encounter. Although I will make small talk in line at the store or at the park, I am still surprised when a complete stranger asks "are you going to have any more children" or some equally personal question.

Texas does seem friendlier than other places -- but even then it depends on where you are. I've encountered very snobby, rude people (by any definition!) here too. Some of it is age, class, and neighborhood based, too.

We moved from Southern California to Central Forida and were amazed by how much friendlier people are here.

Friendly Here In South Mississippi!

We were witnesses to an amazing phenomenon in the days after Hurricane Katrina... People had to lean on and support each other. Without electricity, people come out of their houses and talked, kids rode bikes and played outdoor games. It was amazing! We sure learned alot about what was important after that storm. It's unfortunate that we had to lose so much to be taught that lesson.

Be Friendly. You never know when you may have to ask that person for help!

From Martin County south through Palm Beach county into Broward and Miami-Dade, they may as well rename the state New York South. THAT in and of itself tells you something about the attitudes in S Florida

I would say it's about half and half here. Either they're VERY friendly, or VERY rude. No in betweens.

very friendly here especially this new neighbourhood. I already know all of my neightbours They all walk their dogs or just themselves and stop to chat if youre outside. Very nice people.

No, I think it's great.

Did you read my first reply about my husband's impression of Kansas? BTW, my childhood friend lives in Kansas and has for many years. About 2 years ago, her husband got a job offer in VA, they moved there and hated it. Within the same year, they moved back to Kansas.

I have to agree with this. My DH has been to Kansas a couple times for work and said the people there are incredibly friendly. Seems like it would be a great place to live.

Well, The Villages is advertised as "Florida's friendliest hometown" and it lives up to it quite well. We've been here over eight months and love it. The one catch is it's an "active adult community," which means at least one person in each household must be 55+ with no full-time residents under 19.

And you must be lucky, because with all those 55+ folks, you'd expect at least a few grumpy old men in the mix.

Hi Y'all from Houston-very friendly here!!! My dh was shocked at how friendly people are here-took some getting used to. We went back to Ohio (where he was from and where I lived for a number of years) and we took Texas friendly back with us-people responses were hysterical. They acted like we were aliens or at the very least convicted sexual predators-especially when my dh was friendly. We were very happy to get back on home!!

lived in south florida all my life and it's lukewarm here. it's my dream to live in a friendly place!
