People are incredibly friendly out here in the Dakotas, so much so that this Massachusetts girl still suffers from culture shock 5 years later.
I still can't get a handle on chatting it up with complete strangers just because you're standing by them in a checkout line or direct questions without inquiring about one's opinion about the weather first being offensive! don't get me wrong, I LOVE the people out here, but every once in a while I'd like to just run an errand without it becoming a social extravaganza again.

BTW, my childhood friend lives in Kansas and has for many years. About 2 years ago, her husband got a job offer in VA, they moved there and hated it. Within the same year, they moved back to Kansas.
My dh was shocked at how friendly people are here-took some getting used to. We went back to Ohio (where he was from and where I lived for a number of years) and we took Texas friendly back with us-people responses were hysterical. They acted like we were aliens or at the very least convicted sexual predators-especially when my dh was friendly. We were very happy to get back on home!!
