Are lawyers really that bad?

Do they deserve the attacks that they get?

I don't want to suggest that all lawyers are these angelic creatures that we should drop and worship. But at the same time, do they really deserve the awful treatment they get?

Right or wrong, lawyers are perceived as people who gain from the misfortune (or misbehavior) of others.

I think it depends on the sort of lawyer. I know of one who has dabbled in contracts and such and appears harmless enough.....as a lawyer that is.

Everyone hates lawyers until they need one. :)

I don't think lawyers are awful. I have had to deal with lawyers for a few mattes (in defence of a law suit and a custody case and for advise) and work with lawyers often. I find them smart and helpful. One of them told me once that they are like dentist. That may be true but I find both dentist and lawyers to be critical when I need them and am grateful they are there.

When my ex and I were divorcing, the attorney for the college where I worked knew I was flat broke due to my ex and offered to take care of everything pro bono. He was wonderful. I made a big plate of cookies and candy every Christmas for him and his wife as long as I lived in that town. I still send him a Christmas card every year.

He reached out to help me during a terrible time with no thought of monetary gain whatsoever. I cannot express how grateful I am that he was there when I needed help.

I have a friend who is an attorney and teaches, as well. She works exclusively pro bono as an attorney now and volunteers her services at a shelter for abused women.

So, not all lawyers are jerks. In fact, the two I know personally are wonderful people.

I've liked every lawyer I've ever known, except the one that represented my ex in our divorce. He was mean and hurtful.

I would suggest that as in every walk of life there are the good ones and the rotten ones. I suppose it all depends on why they chose their line of work. My future BIL is almost finished with law school and plans on working for the DA. I think he's a great kid.

I think there are good and bad in every profession.

Lawyers that I have known on a personal level (friends, spouses of friends etc.) have been fine.

As a nurse, I find that when I am caring for a lawyer or a lawyer's family member, there is always a little something said about lawsuit, malpractice etc....kind of a little comment meant to "keep me on my toes" so to speak.

Truthfully, I give all my patients the best care I can, which is what I usually tell them.

My DD is planning on being a lawyer. So I would so not all lawyers are bad.

Lawyers I have dealt with professionally have been fine.
My DD's MIL is a lawyer, though, and I am still waiting for a house to fall on her!:(

I'm an attorney, and I think I'm a good person! :goodvibes

I would say that 85% of my adversaries are great people too! There's a few bad apples, and those few are on my mental "list," so to speak!

Since my uncle and cousin are both lawyers, I would say no, but there is the biggest sleazeball lawyer in town that when you see him on tv with his newest client, you KNOW that client is guilty.

I happen to know one, and she is one of the sweetest, most loyal friends you'd ever want to meet. She will tell it how it is though.

Frankly, I'm glad we have lawyers. There'd be a lot more people being taken advantage of without them.

I don't think so...I graduate law school next year and I think I'm a pretty decent person. I can provide references if you like :) Of course, maybe the change happens once you pass the bar....

What then makes a lawyer a "bad lawyer" or "scum?"

To me...the ones who exploit their clients to further their own agendas:mad: and those that turn a blind eye to their obviously guilty clients to grab some media attention. I love the nutty ones:hug:

Sooo.... things like walking out on clients, not following their cases, and holding their papers etc.? The types of things that get lawyers suspended?

What about lawyers who are able to get guilty defendants acquitted? For example, what about lawyers that get a client's confession suppressed because of the police's failure to follow Miranda?

Now this is just my opinion, OK? I would respect a lawyer who walked out on a client they knew was guilty, getting a guilty client acquitted or their confession suppressed is not something I can support:confused3 To me, upholding the law, means having justice served not who can play the game better. I'm aware that's not the way it works:)
