Are lanyards really necessary??

I carry mine in the CC beach bag they give us for around the ship or in my pocket. The kids carry theirs in pocket (they don't like the lanyards at all) And my husband carries his in his pocket.
On excursions I bring a crossbody bag for ID etc. and I carry the kids cards with mine.

I really don't like the feel of the lanyards around my neck, although the newer lanyards seem to feel a bit better than the older ones. Ultimately, all lanyards end up hanging on the hooks by the bathroom. :)

you can rename it, shrink it, run a cool website but there's no disguising a belly-bag.
Vegas buffet, here I come.
the green stuff is delicious!
lol...I saw someone posted this a while back. I don't think it would be that comfortable...but thought of it as an extendable fanny pack.

Necessary? No. But my preference is to use one. I also use it for my Cove Cafe bean card, excursion tickets and drink receipts. In the evening at dinner I usually carry a wristlet instead that I also put my phone into since I never know if I'll want it for pictures. During the day if I'm lounging around the ship I have my iPad so I don't need my phone and just use the lanyard.

I frequently don't have pockets and many of the ones I do have are shallow. It's also more convenient when wanting to get into the room, pay for drinks or swipe on/off the ship to have it easily at hand round my neck. I like having my hands free and knowing where it is without having something slung over my shoulder or worrying about checking a pocket.

I wore a lanyard for work for 25 years. Never liked them but they were convenient for keeping the necessary identification and access cards that I needed on a daily basis readily available. I'm retired now but I wear a lanyard on the ship and don't think too much more about it. When I go ashore, the lanyard with KTTW card goes in my pocket. I don't need it except to go ashore and come back aboard, but I know where it is and it's convenient to pull out and put back on when I return to the ship.

DW hates lanyards so tends to put her KTTW in a pocket, if she has one. If not, she gives it to me to hold, or puts in her tote bag if she goes to the pool or beach. My kids, admittedly young adults, used lanyards, pockets, and other means to carry their KTTW. My daughter liked a wrist lanyard.

Pretty much personal preference. Our kids kept theirs in their pocket. And also it depends what your family does on a cruise.
We went on a cruise to spend time with our kids, so we did everything together. We were together 24/7 for the entire week, so only one of us really needed a KTTW card.

I have these inventions on my body whenever I wear clothes called pockets. They work wonders for holding my KTTW card, and they even hold my phone/camera as well. Last thing I want is a leash around my neck to get hung up on door handles, etc.

I second this option. It works really well on the ship, out at port, and days at the beach.

It depends on what I'm doing. We always have them from the CC, but I only use it if I know I won't be bringing anything else to put my Key in. Last cruise I used one of those silicone pockets on the back of my phone. Worked like a charm, because I almost always carry my phone for the camera, and I didn't have to fuss with the lanyard. (If you do get one, I'd recommend putting a case on your phone first if you don't have one already.)

I am not a fan of lanyards and have never worn one. The two seconds a lanyard might save me in "swipe time" are vastly outweighed by the annoyance of having something dangling from my neck all day.

I could probably tolerate the middle ground: the card holder with the retractable line that clips on your belt, but honestly, my pocket does just fine.

Yes! This! Why isn't there a hole in the key so you can attach something like this?

What I find funny is the men who will shriek about wearing a tie for formal night but walk around all day with a lanyard and card holder

There can be. Just bring a hole punch. Make sure you don't hit the RFID chip inside.

On a side note, has anybody done any forensic investigation - in other words, dismantling of a KTTW card - to see if they can find the chip location?

You don't even need a hole. The ones I have at work use a plastic sleeve with the line attached. Just slide your card into the sleeve and done.

Can't you kind of see it when you hold the card up to a bright light?

I prefer the lanyards. I elected to shut down my cell phone and store it for the duration of the cruise. My theory was that if it was lost, stolen, damaged by water or sand I would be without a phone once I had to go back to reality. I kept the key card, ID and credit cards in the lanyard all the time. I had my waterproof camera on a D-carabiner clipped to my shorts, swim suit or lanyard when I was in a sundress. That way if the camera was lost, stolen, damaged...etc I still had my phone when we got home. The lanyard also gave me a sense of security from pickpockets and would-be purse snatchers when in ports I wasn't familiar with. Chances are slim this would ever happen but my brain is a little worrisome and it just made me "feel" better. The lanyards we had were waterproof so it went in the pools and ocean with me. My husband wore a variety of swim trunks the entire cruise. We only bought trunks with zippered pockets and he kept his plastic in those pockets the entire time.

I'm new to the cruising section of the DIS. I'm researching a trip for me and my kids in 2018 so bear with me here...

Why doesn't DCL use magic bands like they do in the parks? I wouldn't want to wear a lanyard and ladies pockets are more shallow than mens pockets so for me, I wouldn't trust a card to stay in my pocket.

Thanks!

I believe it is, in part, due to the fact that you have to provide identification to customs and port agents that proves you are a passenger on the ship. Neither a passport nor a MagicBand will provide evidence of that.

Got got off the Fantasy. First cruise and loved it! I'm not a fan of things around my neck, so I used a Vera Bradley coin/ID thing. It could also hold my ID and credit card when we went into port. It easily fit into a pocket, a clutch, or a beach bag depending on what I was doing. It worked great!

We've done 2 cruises and I've never worn a lanyard. A lanyard around the neck doesn't exactly go with my vacation wardrobe :)
