Are lanyards really necessary??

I'm new to the cruising section of the DIS. I'm researching a trip for me and my kids in 2018 so bear with me here...

Why doesn't DCL use magic bands like they do in the parks? I wouldn't want to wear a lanyard and ladies pockets are more shallow than mens pockets so for me, I wouldn't trust a card to stay in my pocket.

Thanks!

LOL! When at WDW, I wear my Magic Band on a lanyard. I haven't worn a watch in nearly 30 years and now I find any kind of band on my wrist to be extremely annoying.

Last thing I want to do in a foreign port is wander around with a bright yellow band on my wrist that says, "Hey! Look at me! I'm an American tourist with Disney!" That thing would go straight into my pocket. Magic Bands are uncomfortable anyway.

Same reason the lanyard comes off and goes into my pocket. It's obvious enough to the locals that I'm a visitor without telling them I'm cruising on a particular cruise line.

I like the lanyard. I don't have to worry about leaving a purse, card ect. around the ship. I use my card to look at photos in Shutters, buy drinks, drop off my son at the kids club and get in the room.

Why are fanny packs-belly bags shunned ? Lol. Seriously, why? I kinda like them.

Me too! As a disabled person I find them ideal. I got one at the Starwars weekends one year. I love it and wear it with pride! I am captain America wheels on my wheelchair... Lol.

I liked the lanyard I wear mosquito proof shirts and the card bit slides perfectly into the top pocket. It's like the magic band helps me not forget it when out and about.

What is your alternative? Wallet or something else?

Pocket. I just stick my room key in my pocket. I have used a lanyard off and on. The convenience is you can take it off and hang it on the wall hook and know where it is -- also use it to put receipts for picture pick-up or merchandise so when I leave the room I have the receipts I may need. Otherwise, I just use pockets.

I hate lanyards. Just don't like having things around my neck. Heck, half the time when I wear a necklace, it comes off at some point during the day because it's annoying me so much. But for some reason I have no problems with a small cross-body purse. That's what I use the majority of the time on the cruise. This way I have my KTTW, camera/phone, chapstick (always have to have it with me), sunglasses, etc. Then for a port day, I can use the cross-body purse or throw it in my beach bag or backpack. My husband usually puts his KTTW in his pocket or on his money clip.

My DH and I wear lanyards but for the kids, we only put the lanyards on when we get on and off the ship, the rest of the time, we have them sitting in the room. I find the lanyards helpful because of you always know where they are.... however I'm not a wallet person, DH is but he still uses a lanyard. For our first cruise we did not use a lanyard and we were fine. We likely use them more because we get them for free... not sure I would buy some

Especially for kids? Is it just to hold the card that gives you charging abilities? If so, my kids don't need to carry that around right? Does the card act as your room key as well? Please advise.

I always wear mine. I have a bunch of pins I add to them to jazz them up and I find them extremely useful for carrying KTTW cards and photo IDs while on an excursion.

I really hope the get onboard (pun intended) with Magic Bands in the future! It would be so nice to have the option of wearing a bracelet onboard rather than dragging a key card around, particularly for pool time!

Really? I find them to be more comfortable than a watch. And so convenient! I wouldn't wear it off the ship, but I would love to use them on the ship.

I've never used a lanyard as I can't stand the feeling of something around my neck. I tend to put my card in my pocket, or if I'm carrying a purse/backpack/camera bag, it goes in there.

No...not necessary at all. I have never used one on any cruise. My wife and I always bring a business card holder as my wallet in port so we can have credit cards and such and the stateroom cards fit in there just fine. When on the boat I'll stick it in my bag if we're at the pool or in my pocket if we are walking around. I would HATE wearing a lanyard all day long more than I hate wearing a magic band.

I wouldn't mind it as long as the use of the magic band wasn't required.

It's not required at the parks, so I don't see them requiring it onboard... especially since you would need a card for port days. I would say they wouldn't even need to provided them to everyone the way they do for WDW, just allow you to use them if you have them, and sell them onboard.

We wear our lanyards most of the time. It just seems to be the most convenient way of carrying our Kttw cards.
One tip though...take them off for photos! I can't tell you how many times I've been searching through our photos for a good family picture for a Christmas card or something and I can't find one I like because of the lanyards. We wear the bright, yellow ones that they give us and they just scream out in every picture. Drives me nuts!
