Are kids allowed carry-ons?

Our boys are 9 & 11, are they allowed carry-ons on the plane or just the adults? They were going to take a backpack each.

Yep, they are. My dd, almost 11, always has her backpack when she flies. And we have actually done just carryon before. We each had a largish purse type tote plus our carry-on luggage. No problem.

Any ticketed passenger is allowed carryon's. The only ones who are not are infants in arms.

I think most airlines allow 1 bag plus a small personal item (purse, computer, etc). You should check with yours to make sure.

Like everyone else said, if you have a ticket you're allowed a carry on. Just make sure the bag is within the carry on size specified by the airline (you can find that on the airline's website). A "normal" backpack would easily be within the size allowance! We try to stress that our son pack lightly, as there's a lot of walking in an airport, and a backpack can get pretty heavy after a while...

I also wondered if kids get the same checked in baggage allowance as adults. We are a party of 3 - 2 adults and 1 child aged 10 and are planning on checking in 3 suitcases in total. We are flying with Delta but I can't see any reference to kids allowances on their website.

Every ticketed passenger has the same baggage allowance. This includes children who have paid for a seat.

Not only do kids get a checked bag allowance, it doesn't have to be used for "their" bags.

If it's two adults and two kids, and the checked bag allowance is 2 per person, the you can check 8 peices of luggage between you, regardless of who's bag it is. So if Mom has 3 peices, and little Timmy only has one, he can check Mom's extra peice as part of his allowance. Cool, huh?!
