Are Heely's really dangerous?

Just as dangerous as any other roller skates or blades.

Denise in MI

Last year a boy on Heely's zipped past me yelling "Out of the way!!" in a grocery store and then crashed into the cold cut cooler. He actually fell into the cooler. The store now has a sign on the entry that Heely's are banned.

:lmao: I'm sorry, the visualization made me laugh out loud. I wonder if he learned his lesson? :rotfl2:

They are no more or less dangerous than any other wheeled toy in my opinion.

If your kid is corrdinated then go for it, but if you wouldn't consider skates or a skateboard a good buy for your kid then these are also off the list.

I know a 10 year old, responsible, little boy that ended up with a spiral fracture in his ankle after using heelys. The doctor said it was the worst he had ever seen. Needless to say, the parents threw the heelys in the garbage.

My DD13 had 'em when she was 10 thereabouts, and wore those things out. :) She loved 'em but was sensible (always has been) and on top of that, she's a dancer so has the coordination that helps. I always told her "careful, imagine what Mr Scott would say if you broke something before recital!!"

Kids who come at me on Heelys yelling "Out of my way!" get clotheslined. What can I say...it's an automatic self preservation reaction. Worked really well on the brat at Gatorland who was heading right for me on a downhill slope.

I really hate them. When i'm at the store, there always seems to be a kid, not paying attention, and skating around. I've almost been hit a few times. Its a shame the parents allow them to be worn in stores. Its like what others have mentioned. There a skate, and should only be worn places that allow skating. And that is not in Stores.

roller skates... vs heelys?
common sense tells you not to wear roller skates in the mall..
personally i would love to ban them completely.
kids are kids.. wen parents are not around they will do what they wanna

Would it was that simple. The kid I saw flatten a person at Epcot had PARENTS right there. They didn't even think it required an apology. Seemed mad that the world was not clearing a path for "Darling" (Security was called and the CM would not let them just walk away LOL! I don't know what happened, but I would have been considering my legal options if that was me flat on the ground!)

My boys have them. DS7 doesn't have the patience to learn how to use them. the two older boys love them.

Our rules: Can't wear them anywhere off our property. Not in the road. It's ok on sidewalks. We have concrete and brick floors, so they fly all through our house.

The only bumps and bruises they got, was when they were learning how to use them. Kids are kids, and I can't wrap them in bubble wrap.

We don't wear them to stores though. No no no. Drives me batty.

My DD loves hers. She wears them all the time. I guess I look at it as she could just be walking and trip over a rock and break something so I don't worry to much about her getting hurt. She rides a bike, scooter, minicycle, rollerblades, ect..... so I see the Heeleys as the same.

I think that the danger with heelys is actually a misunderstanding. They are a casual shoe, so the kids are more likely to just throw them on wherever they go. This result in a kid on skates in the market, without gear etc. I havent found them to be anymore dangerous than skates, except for the fact that the kids are more likely to wear gear to go skating. Lots of backward falls with heelys and i could see broken wrists on that one.
you have to monitor when and where they wear them..

ok...question for the parents who buy heelys

you keep saying that you consider them the same thing as rollerblades...you dont let your kids where them to stores, or in public, etc.

so why dont you just buy them rollerblades?!?!?!?!?!?

it makes absolutely no sense to me......i guess in my opinion its a waste of money if there seen as the exact same thing as rollerblades:confused3

They're not just like roller blades (most of us were comparing the fact that they are a wheeled item *like roller skates, roller blades, bikes, scooters) My kids like them, so I buy them. And with roller blades, you can't remove the wheels and have a regular pair of athletic shoes. So it serves a double purpose ;)

No...Heely's are no more dangerous than any other wheeled toy that requires you to WEAR SAFETY GEAR when you are using them. It' the PARENTS of those children that are allowed to wear them wherever and whenever they want to that are DANGEROUS!

I have to admit that I have purchased a pair of heely's for dd8 for Christmas. She has wanted them for years and I have always said no - a very firm no.

What changed my mind? DD is older and more coordinated. She is well versed in the rules of safety since she is an experienced bike and scooter rider. Finally, I came across a good deal - $15 for heely's (and I had a coupon that meant only $5 cash out of my pocket).

For a small price I could purchase something dd will be thrilled to recieve - I could not resist. I did try. I asked numerous people (dh, grandma, older brothers) to talk me out of the purchase. They all thought she was ready for the heely's. Guess we will know for certain come Christmas.

Oh, and as far as being the same as roller blades, I would argue no. The wheel base width and the height between the wheels and the ground make a huge difference in how you menuever. I would compare it to a razor scooter vs. a standard scooter.

I find them very dangerous when used in public places, not to mention annoying. They should be treated as roller skates and not used any place where you wouldn't wear skates. I've seen too many kids in malls and stores an on crowded public sidewalks using Heelys in a reckless manner. They expect you to move out of their way just because they have wheels in their shoes.

I especially like them in airport :sad2: My kid almost got barreled over the last time we were in a terminal, god was I :headache: These things should be treated as roller skates and helmets worn. I've seen kids slide back and hit their head on the sidewalk they hit. Is that safe? No!

Although it does help keep the ER's busy....
