Member of the gap toothed brigade here. I have a small gap in the front teeth, much like Jorja Fox. I always thought about getting braces or veneers or something, but then one day this French cab driver told me (without prior discussion of the subject), "Don't ever fix your teeth. You're smile is beautiful." And I thought, yeah--it is. Imperfection can be pretty, too. I think there is nothing more beautiful than a person who ownes who they are.

I had all of my wisdom teeth removed as a child and braces as a young teen. I developed the small gap as a young adult after I stopped wearing my upper retainer. I've had the whatever-it-is-they-use-to-fill-in-a-gap repaired once as it begins to break down over time. The next time, I think I'll just have them take it all off instead of repairing it. I can always go back to it later. How many folks get to choose between a gap or no gap?! :goodvibes

Hang in there! I got braces a couple of days after I turned 33, and got them off when I was 36. I had them for on for 39 months! BEST THING I ever did for myself was fixing my crooked teeth. I love the result, and I still admire my smile in the mirror! And I still faithfully wear my retainers every other night. :)

:thumbsup2
My ortho loves me because I am so gung ho, like he'll tell me that I may be sore for a couple of days and I'm all GREAT! That means they're working.

He knows that I've waited a long time for this and I won't screw it up by not following his directions.I have pics of myself when they were first put on, 5 months later and then now and I love to sit and compare..and I'm not even done yet. LOL

No, not necessarily. I've met some very beautiful women with a gap between the front teeth.

Hehe, I know exactly what you mean. ;) For months before I got my braces off, I would analyze my teeth marks in sandwiches and stuff. I still do that. I'll bite into my sandwich and think "Oh, what a pretty bite mark!" :teeth:

I really want to bite into an apple and see the difference there. My bite used to be way off so there would be the normal little "teeth scoop" marks in the apple but also a set of puncture marks set a few centimeters away that were where my front teeth had bitten but couldn't meet my bottom teeth. It was weird. I still haven't bitten an apple yet because the treatment that fixed my bite has left my jaw hinges snapping and popping and aching even 2 years later, but it is my plan to one day. Yes, I'm strange. :lmao:

I agree (even though I just posted that I indulged my daughter's desire to get rid of her gap). She is interested in broadcast journalism, so she might one day actually need perfect teeth. But I'm with you on EVERYONE these days (in the US) getting braces. One of my friends-who is 53-just got braces. Her front teeth were pushing out just a smidge. Get real-she's never going to be a movie star, or be on TV or be a model....why can't her teeth push out just a smidge?

I got braces a year ago last January, as I said I was 35 at the time, self conscious, but really proud that I finally went and did it instead of complaining about it.
Some people were like "why did you get braces??" But they were either being polite or had known me so long they stopped noticing how crooked my teeth were, I guess.
EVERY SINGLE DAY I looked in the mirror and thought to myself God I hate my teeth.
Every single day since I've had the braces I've looked in the mirror and thought how glad I am that I did this.

Since I've gotten my braces my SIL(42) and my friend(33) both have gotten braces-I inspired them, LOL-now those 2 I don't think needed braces AT ALL. My friend got Invasalign, my SIL got the traditional metal like I have(and they both had braces in the past, this was just a stoppage of retainer shift, so their teeth really aren't that bad).

I think they are nuts, I never noticed anything wrong with their teeth, however, who's to say they didn't look in the mirror every day like I did and think I hate my teeth, they make me feel so bad about myself.
So good for them for doing something that makes themselves feel better.

I used to say that if any of my kids ever needed braces, I'd get my teeth fixed also. Well, now I know I could NEVER do that. Sitting with DD at the ortho yesterday after getting her braces, listening to the lady tell her how to floss, showing her how to thread the floss under the wire, made me all tingly ... it's making me tingly just typing it. I really have a phobia about people messing with my teeth. After I got my teeth cleaned last time, I sat in my car and sobbed for 20 minutes. I could NEVER do braces.:sad2:

It doesn't make a difference to me, as long as they are nice teeth with a smallish gap, who cares? I have more of a problem with people who have horrible scuzzy teeth. Ugh. Madonna has a gap, and no one seemed to mind. As for Jorga Fox, I just can't stand her, she is so annoying, so on her I can't stand it, because I can't stand her!!!

On people like Madonna and David Letterman? No. On Pasha from last season's "So You Think You Can Dance"? Yes! :thumbsup2

That's him in the middle:

Here's a cute tribute video of him on youtube:

When I was in junior high, I had a gap in my front teeth that didn't seem to want to close. Thank god that Lauren Hutton and her famous gap were on all the covers of the top fashion mags. That made me feel soooo much better knowing that a woman w/a gap toothed smile could be considered beautiful. It was b/c of her that I learned to love the gap ... until it finally closed.

DS had a slight gap in his teeth and I think he looked so sweet. Perhaps beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.

Personally I think they're very unattractive. It's a total turnoff!

Oh, you beat me to it. Pasha's gap is ADORABLE, as is he. I like the gap!

Yes, it looks very cute on him. It was hard to find a pic of him smiling showing his teeth! Usually his mouth is closed. But he smiles a lot in the dance videos.

For the life of me I can't remember who told me this, but it has stuck with me my entire life. When I was a kid, somebody told me that a gap in the front teeth was a sign of intelligence in a woman and stupidity in a man. As a kid, I believed it, but you know how you can logically know something is false as an adult, but the belief still sticks a little? That's the way it is with that.

So when I see a gap in a man, I wonder why he doesn't get it fixed, but when I see it in a woman, I think it's because she wants to be seen as intelligent. :rotfl2:

Yes, I'm an idiot, and no, I don't have a gap. :lmao:

That's funny. Someone once told me that guys with a full lower lip were thought to be generous. She was referring to the guy I was dating at the time. That lying creep sent me to the poorhouse! So that one obviously wasn't true. :headache:
