Are Facebook groups killing the DISboards?

It seems that way to me. I do both but like the DIS best. Even though Facebook groups are closed, people with bad intensions now have your name, can find your address and know when you are cruising. People can say they are cruising to join a group, then "cancel" and they have the info.

No,

Facebook let's people get to know each other better, stop the whole Internet reading, make our own rules on what we can and cannot say, ie free speech.

We can link in what we want, discuss what we want, I have two very very active Facebook groups for cruises that are upcoming and there brilliant, we post photos there we wouldn't post here.

It's safer as people who may rob your home when your away do not work out who you area.

Not quite sure what this has to do with the demise of the DISBoards. This is an issue with any FB activity. As far as I know the DIS has been steadily increasing membership and activity.

seems most of the individual cruises and fish extenders have gone to face book.
I don't do FB, so I have been shut out of joining the FE and most of the cruise discussions.

I do not think anyone should ever feel they are shut out I didn't do FB in the past it took me about a minute to set myself up, not difficult and posting is easier than here.

Remember there are other Disney cruise line forums and they may not post here but like to join a FB group and FE, never feel left out I would guess somewhere a younger family member etc could set you up in seconds. ;):)

That's what I've noticed, also. FB has really cut into the cruise meets threads. As soon as someone starts a thread for a specific cruise, someone else (or even the first person) says, "come on over to facebook" and then nothing every happens on the DISboard meet thread.

There are some of us who don't "do" facebook, for various reasons, as well as those who champion how great facebook is.

I wish somehow we could take back our DISboards meets. There's no reason that a cruise couldn't have a facebook group, as well as a DISboard group. But I really find it annoying when a DIS cruise meet thread has a new cruiser post on it, and immediately someone says "we're meeting on facebook".

I, also, have been cut out of participating on at least one cruise because, while the facebook group says "we'll keep you updated" to us over here, it's kind of like being second hand citizens. We have no say in what's being set up or discussed, but we're "invited" to come participate in what they've set up. Not quite as friendly, in my opinion.

Princess Schmoo, I agree.

Our group is mainly on FB. I am in charge of the FE spreadsheet. I have it linked on both FB and the Dis cruise meet. (I use Google docs). Any announcements I make are duplicated to both the FB and the DIS. There is hardly any discussions on the DIS. The majority of the discussions are on FB. I really think it is sad. Even though it is a closed group, I have lost the anonymity that I enjoy on the DIS.

I just had someone ask me about the FE. I had to refer her to the DIS. This is the only place I know of that has really good info about the FE.

There is one FB group about Disney cruising in general. We are not allowed to mention the DIS. :confused3 (yes, I got in trouble) All I can say is, not my group, not my rules.

You are missing the point, some of us CHOOSE not to join fb and it is not because we are some hapless band of tech-phobics who can't set up a simple fb account.

Actually No I appreciate everyone's right to choose I do not know the reasons why anyone wouldn't post on FB on principle, but it's choose, but also it's a democracy and if the majority of people decide to go to FB and invite others it's the people who do not go " choice" they didn't go and they can't force others to post here if they choose not too.

Clearly many people do choose to set up a FB group so there are perceived benefits there.

It's like a group of friends and say six of them want to go to a meal and one says I do not want to go to that meal, it's their choice not to go, but they can't then complain if they were invited, the others go and their left at home alone. You wouldn't want six friends not to enjoy themselves as you are the only one who didn't want to do it.

Technology moves on FB will be out of date in a few years.

People complain about online check in, or self service airport check in or self service checkouts st shops, IT has moved on, Internet forums have been around a while but not guaranteed a future.

Yeah I dunno. We have a couple people on our FB group who created fake accounts, simply to keep up with everything that's happening. As far as I know (I keep checking our FE meet thread here), we do not have anyone that's been left out because they do not FB.

Dummy accounts are pretty easy and as soon as your cruise is over, delete it and you don't have to do FB again. :)

JMHO though.

Agree like it or not it's here many people prefer it it's a democracy, the majority choose, you can set up and delete an account easy, far easier than posting here.

Everyone has choice but you can't force people to post here you have yo Ho where the majority are or you will be left out.

I was actually giving you insight to your post to meriweather, I am confused about the rest of your post as I was not complaining about the merits or validity of fb.

OK - you other post said I was missing the point so I responded to that to explain I acknowledge and respect choice.

I don't think it's an either/or thing. We had people join our cruise meet through FB and some through the DIS. We post important information on both so that we can reach as many people on our cruise as we can. Some of our group were introduced to the DIS via FB - so that's helping spread the word about what a great site this is.

I'm just glad that I have the opportunity to chat with folks as excited about the cruise as I am. I don't care which site it is.

I agree with both of these.

I recently had to shut down my facebook account due to security reasons. My account had everything set up under private and still had someone contact me in a way that made me very uneasy so it got deleted.

Even before that tho I preferred discussing things on here rather than in the FB groups, even tho they are closed groups a lot of times there are people in those groups who are not on the dis and can be less helpful and ruder at least in my experience.

My cruise group has a thread but no one talks on it at all. Everything is talked about on fb and I do feel a little left out but it isn't going to ruin my vacation. Im sure we will have a good time regardless but it would have been fun to talk/discuss things with other disers especially since this will be our first cruise.

Just a side note as someone who had FB for 5+ years and now doesn't (there are a lot of others like me) I am happier and have so much more times on my hands. I have more real conversation with friends rather than assuming they saw my news on FB. It is also a growing trend of people deleting their FB accounts I have many friends, my age, who are on will be soon deleting their accounts.

Our FB group is private so others on fb cannot see who is cruising and when they'll be out of town.

I like having both The DIS and FB for different reason.

Agreed. :worried:

Yep, same here.

And I also post here and on my FB group for totally different reasons.
