Are Diaper Cakes a new thing?

My wife just went to a baby shower that had a diaper cake. Is this is a new thing? Seems like an awfully expensive way to give someone diapers as a shower gift.

Or is this something that only a woman can understand?

No, they aren't new, nor do they have to be really expensive. I have used them as a table decoration at a few showers I've throw. They kinda' cute and ultimately useful.

Nope, not a new thing. Sometimes they are used as sort of a centerpiece. Often they are "decorated" with useful things such as baby wash, lotions, wash clothes, toys, etc.

At my DIL's baby shower, I think there were 3 diaper cakes.

I used to make them YEARS ago. Most of the kids I made them for are in high school now!

No, not new to the world just new to you. It's a practical gift, which is all I give!

I'm more confused about how it's an expensive gift?

If you gift diapers (which are a GREAT gift!!!) it's just a creative way to present them rather than wrapping the square package.

My cousin got one at her baby shower- she is a huge WVU fan and they decorated it with all sorts of WVU stuff and also rolled up some bibs/onesies in places of diapers. It was very cute!

I did a Mickey Mouse cake recently. She was having a boy, so Mickey diapers along w/ disney themed rattles, wash clothes and some lotions, bottles, etc.

The topper on the cake was a mickey head "blankie" type thing. I don't know what you call it but a little blankie like the child would walk around w/. It came out beautiful and I used size 3 diapers. That way they could use it as a centerpiece for a while before breaking the cake apart.

I would agree that they do end up being fairly expensive depending on what you add to them, but they have definitely been around a while! I made 2 in 2008 for my 2 nieces, and they became a primary part of my gift, in addition to the work I did on the shower, etc. I love them, and I hope someone makes me one for one of my showers!! I've considered making myself one because they are so much fun! I used size 2 diapers for the same reason that brittsmum used size 3-that way they can enjoy it before dissassembling it!

Not new- I saw them at least 26 years ago when I was pregnant with our son.

There are ways to make them inexpensively but whenever I make one it comes out to be around $50. That's a big box of namebrand diapers (all of which except 6 are usable because I glue them shut for the outer part of the cake), soaps, lotions, bibs, washcloths, and a few toys for the theme. I don't really care for the diaper wreaths, but at a local craft fair people were selling them for $80. I guess I get creeped out about someone I don't know handling the diapers.

It's NOT awfully expensive. It's a CREATIVE way to give diapers and all mother's I've talked to really appreciate it.

I always wanted one so now I make them for all the showers we go to. I shop all year for deals so I am ready for a nice gift without tons of money. Plus it is something the girls can help me make.

I received one at my shower. I thought it was cute, but my shower was about 6 weeks before I actually had my child and the thought of using those touched, now a little dusty, diapers on my child made be ill!

If you are going to give diapers, keep them wrapped, unopened and untouched!

PS...diapers and wipes and a great gift!

I just got one 2 weeks ago at my shower!!! My cousin made it and it was great! Tons of diapers, some onesies, pacifiers, a little musical toy and some hair bows. So cute!

My Mom made one for SIL's shower next weekend. It's awesome! I think it's a unique way to give a gift. Most of the one's I've seen have been made by the person throwing the shower and sit as a centerpiece. The one we have for SIL has blankets wrapped around the bottom layer, bibs, onesies, and shirts around the other layers. Then there are pacifiers, bows, a few toys and sippy cups on there too.

At my shower for my DD, I was given a diaper cake. My DD will be 16 in April.

I LOVED it!!! The little extras in mine were little books, baby washcloths, and the mini J&J baby products.

They have been around a long time but I think in recent years they have gotten more popular. My mom and I made a diaper cake for my sister's shower about five years ago. My mom bought the diapers and I bought the toys, small decorations and rattles.
