Are all refrigerators complete junk these days?

Your comment on LG not honoring the warranty is exactly why I stay away from LG products. We ran into a similar situation with a product that was only 2 months old but because Best Buy insisted on trying to fix it first because we bought it there LG got out of their warranty. Had I known then what I know now I would have insisted Best Buy take it back and give us a new one.

I have an LG refrigerator. It's 3 years out of warranty now. Just a couple of months ago, a sensor went out and the light inside stayed on for hours melting the light casing and ceiling. We called, told them the issue and within a week a repair man was sent, replaced sensor and all burned spots. No issue. Free of charge.

Kenmore on the other hand is a nightmare. Bought horrid top of the line washer and dryer. Turns out the washer would turn on and cycle while we weren't even home. They replaced it. The new one, the board kept going out. We finally trashed it after 2 years and bought a cheap no frills maytag.

I am wondering people with these 17+ year old... I suspect the older ones were built much better. We had an old Amana (age unknown but I know it was older than 1994) up until 2011. It was great until it started freezing everything.

Our dishwasher was probably something out of the 80's, and it gave up the ghost earlier this year too. People are talking about the lifespan on a lot of these new appliances being 5-6 years, that is just sad.

Yep...talk to any repair guy (BIL does repairs as a second job) and he'll tell you that for the last 15 or so years the manufacturers have stopped building reliable long lasting appliances....because they need you to buy new ones every few years.

So, keep that in mind as you buy......plan on having to replace the appliance anywhere from 3 to 8 years. Buying expensive name brands doesn't make it last longer.

BIL suggestions was to go a "bump and dent" place.....the dents in our fridge are barely noticeable (and frankly with kids you're likely to end up with some after a short time anyway) and the cost was 40% less than brand new......and it still had the warranty because it was brand new! Still won't be happy when I have to replace it again, but at least my loss won't be as great. Check your yellow pages for one near you.

Last year we needed a new fridge, dishwasher, and washing machine. The inside of the LG fridge is made terribly and we had to replace every shelf and bin as they all cracked. Repairman has been out to service unit because of frost on frozen food. Our Maytag washing machine completely died after 3 months and I fought REALLY hard to get it replaced. After reading reviews it seems that everyone owning that model had the same problem. It was a bolt that would crack from wear. So now we have a Samsung but I will say that it was a lot of work and drama to get the company to honor the warranty and the store to also honor their return policy. Our 15 month old Maytag dishwasher also completely stopped working. Called for repair and the wanted $300. I refused to pay and dealt with no dishwasher for a bit. Finally started researching our problem and found that tons of our model had the same issue. I ordered the part myself for $127 and we fixed it. But that is really BS that a machine only lasts that short amount of time. New appliances are made terribly, it is really a shame.

My moms 1970 Avocado green refrigerator died about 2 years ago. Now that was money well spent!
