People tour differently. One AP year I had a total of 18 separate days in the parks and I've visited before and after and I still haven't done everything there is to do in the parks. We've had an 8 night stay and were sad to leave (and we hit the parks every day).
I think DLR is ridiculous for not selling longer tickets.
I'm from Australia and have used the 10 day pass. They do ask for a passport for each person to prove that you are eligible for the pass, so I wouldn't risk it.
Get a deluxe AP. the discounts on food and merchandise will make up for the price difference.
But there is almost no difference between a 5-day hopper + 2 day hopper and a deluxe pass. The OP said they wanted 7 days. There is a $234 difference between a 5 day hopper and a deluxe AP. With a 10% discount, you'd need to spend at least $2,340 on food and merchandise just to break even for one person. Plus then you'd have to worry about block out days too.

We recently booked and asked both Airmiles.ca and the DisneyLand Travel Co., and both confirmed that there are no more 7 day DLR passes. We ended up getting a 5 day from Airmiles.ca and a 1 day from DLTC (as well as a 1 day Knotts pass).
Hasn't been allowed for the last 2 years or soIn the past (it's been at least three years), I've taken my 5 day PH to City Hall and upgraded it to a 6 day by paying a pretty small amount per ticket (maybe $10). Is that no longer allowed?
18 days a year not ridiculous but if you were to 18 consecutive days I have a feeling you would not want to go back for a long time I am as diehard Disney as the next person but that is a lot of consecutive Disney!
Hasn't been allowed for the last 2 years or soThat's essentially what we did on our first trip too, when we couldn't buy a 7-day pass. But, alas, with all the ticket scams, they ended longer tickets. (Soap box time: Now that they take our pictures the moment we walk in, I think they should do longer tickets again. But, that's just my 2 cents, and it doesn't really affect me, since we do Military Salute tickets.)
I don't think its about people renting their tickets out anymore. Like you said, they take a picture and associate with a ticket, so renting the ticket on craigslist is no longer an issue. I think its about DL selling more AP and making more money. In the past when they allowed people to add a few days on the end for a small fee, DL executives probably felt they were leaving money on the table.
