Are 3D ultrasounds safe?

I'm 15 weeks pregnant now, and will have my regular u/s between 18 and 20 weeks. My dr.s office offers an optional 3D u/s between 26 and 30 weeks...just for fun, they don't do measurements or look for anything wrong. Its $100, so the cost isn't bad, and it would be so facinating to see this little peanut. The pictures I've seen on-line are so amazing!

However, is this really okay to do? Is it worth taking a chance if they aren't good for the baby? I didn't have this option with my first, but did end up having about 5 2D u/s. the first was the regular 18 week one, then the second was to see if my low placenta moved. 2 had to do with the PIH I developed towards the end, and the last one was because I felt a decline in movement during the last week.

With this pregnancy I'm hoping I'll only really need the one...that everything will look good right then, and that I won't develop complications that require more. So, dreaming that little dream, would the 3D be a bad thing?

I just know nothing about it. I'd love to hear some input from those that have had one or those that know something about them.

TIA!

If I was pregnant and had the option, I'd do it!

Would they offer it if it was unsafe for the baby?
