April will be "Incredible"-y Fun!

Good morning Incredibles!! Haven't been on much the past few days, so wanted to catch up. I missed my second day of running this week because I was sick, and yesterday though I'm completely better, I almost didn't go out and run because it was cold and drizzly, but I thought to myself, that this is how it starts, the decline, I skip one workout, then another, and before I know it, I'm not exercising at all. I've been that route before, and I will not do it again. So I went out in the rain and ran my 2 miles, in 32 minutes this time!! I felt so good after, and today I got up and did 45 min of wii fit. I want to run the princess half, I got to stay focused.

Veronica- Congrats on your time. It is very impressive to me. You should be so proud.
"Out on the roads there is fitness and self-discovery and the persons we were destined to be."
--Dr. George Sheehan

Love this quote.

Lauren- Congratulations on your first race!! I would say that's an awesome time!! Congrats to your hubby too. You deserve the Garmin. I've heard mention of them here, and one day may look into them. I use my very unofficial mickey watch to time myself.

Jess- Happy belated birthday, and a very special and blessed baptism to your little princess. Enjoy her special day today.:cloud9:

Dona and susie- Good luck with all the grading. Teachers are amazing and patient people, and we parents are so lucky to have you.:worship:

Lisa- Congrats on completing w2d1!!!! I definitely find it easier to run in the mornings. I have a little routine now. I have a chobani pineapple yogurt and a banana before I go. It's nice to just get out of bed and into the running clothes too. Then once I'm showered, I'm done for the day, rather than going later in the afternoon and taking another shower and changing again after the run. Good point about the heat too. With the warmer weather coming, that will make a big difference, and I'll need to think about water too.

We might go into Boston tomorrow and watch some of the marathon. Actually I think we'll go to the outskirts and see an earlier part of the race. I was supposed to work tomrrow but took the day off since it is quiet and it's school vacation here.

Enjoy the weekend.

I ran my first 5K! It went very well. I ran the whole way (my only goal), and I finished in 33:29. My best training time for 3 miles had been about 34:55, so I was very pleased with my pace. The last stretch was tough, and there were a few more hills than I was used to, but I was very happy at the end.

My husband runs, but he has never entered a race. He decided to go with me to show support, but I talked him into doing the 10K instead of the 5K with me. He finished 3rd! I had to give him a hard time about going to support me and then upstaging me. :)

Thanks to all of you for your support!

Great time on the 5K, Lauren, and congratulations to your DH! :cool1:

I am rewarding myself for my first 5K finish.

I ordered a Garmin 305 today. HOORAY!

You will love it! I don't know how I lived without mine.

So would you mind sharing with us what a Garmin is and how you use it? We novice runners have to learn about this stuff so we know what we need to be saving our money for (beside clothes)! ;)

Look at you being INCREDIBLE and running in the rain! :cool2:

Have a wonderful, peaceful Sunday INCREDIBLES! :hippie:

Garmin is a GPS watch, they come in a number of models. There is a rather basic model (205), then the intermediate (305) and then the super spiffy deluxe (405). Using GPS technology, it will track your mileage, pace and time, heart rate too if you use the 305 or 405. For me, the best thing about it is that I never have to guess how far I have run. We do a lot of trail running here, and I cannot plot the distances by driving the car on it and they typically are not well defined on maps like on mapmyrun.com.

I have had my 305 since last June, and I am not blowing smoke when I say I couldn't live without it. You can set it up any way you like for the display; mine has my time on top in big numbers, pace and distance on the bottom in smaller ones. With a quick glance, I know what I need to know. The heartrate is on the top corner in itty bitty numbers, I really don't worry about that so much. But the most fun part is when you get home and sync it up to your computer. It will tell you do much about your run. I use the website Garmin Connect to log all mine, and it even has a player where you will see the graph with your elevation, pace etc changing as you move along the map. It is just so cool.

Amazon has had the 305 for around $150 for a while, the 405 is close to $300:scared1: It is bulky to wear, especially if you are smaller framed. But I am used to it now. Funny thing, when I ran at WDW, I could hear everyones watches beeping and kept thinking it was me! Must be a lot of us set up our alerts for the same thing.

So that is the Garmin, there are a number of other threads about it here on WISH, check out what others have to say too.

In other news, I ran 5 miles this morning in 54:54, 10:59 avg pace. Another good run for me. I was jazzed. The weight loss is really helping improve my running time, and that in turn motivates me to keep on losing so I can run faster.

Now it is off to do laundry, clean bathrooms and change the bed linens. Oh the joy!

PS. Kathy-good for you being INCREDIBLE out there in the drizzle!! That is the spirit, I say I am going to be soaking wet anyway, whats a little extra from the sky gonna hurt?;)

Aiming for the Princess 5K

Hi Everyone!

I've briefly read over everyone's posts and I must say - you guys are AWESOME and some of you are really getting speedy!! Keep up the good work.

Lauren - congrats on your first 5K. INCREDIBLE time! Are you DH hooked on races now? ;) :cool1:

Veronica - 5 miles in under 1 hour. WAY TO GO! Keep up the good work! :cheer2:

Kathy - I would love to see the Boston Marathon up close. I seriously doubt I'll ever be able to participate but just being a spectator would be a thrill for me. I'll probably tune in on TV if there is a station carrying it nationwide.

Lisa - I second the Garmin. I have a 305. It keeps track of all your runs, your pace, your splits & average pace per mile, your heart rate (305 & 405), calories burned, etc. I LOVE IT. $150 is a great price; I paid close to $300 for mine three years ago.

Jess - Hope you had a WONDERFUL birthday weekend. Can't wait to hear all about it! party:

Dona - hope your son had a good experience at his half yesterday. Is this the son that just got a new job? :goodvibes

Patsy - I have my name in the Nike lottery as well. This is the third year I've put in for it. I didn't get chosen the previous two. Here's hoping the third time is a charm. Good luck to you! :thumbsup2

I have a half-marathon this next weekend in OK City. It's the 10th anniversary of the run - in honor of the OK City memorial. There will be a few other WISHers there. I'm really looking forward to it but I'm not prepared. I really haven't done much training. As long as I can walk it all, I'll be OK, though. This really is a good race, I did it two years ago. The people in OK city are so appreciative of the participants. They really go all out to make us feel welcomed. At the race I did previously, we got to meet and talk to the former building manager of the Murrah building - the building that was bombed by Timothy McVeigh. Survivors put on private tours of the memorial for the race participants and our survivor (for our group of 20 people) was the building manager. He said his office remained somewhat intact but the offices across the hall were all gone. He also said that the money raised in the races goes to the memorial and he thanked us for participating. He is truly a remarkable and inspiring gentleman. He lives in Texas now and said he plans to return every year for the race, as long as he can. Wow!

Hope everyone has a great week!

Hi everyone! Thanks for all the birthday and baptism wishes! Birthday was uneventful... went into the running store and not even three minutes after walking in, my son threw up in front of the gels and chews. I was so embarrassed! I cleaned it up for them and told them I would be back without the kids!!! The baptism was absolutely wonderful. I was in heels from 11:30am until 11 at night so by the end of the night I felt like I had run three marathons. But it was great.

This morning I ran 5.5 miles in 1:03 in 37 degree weather. I don't know if 1:03 is a good time but I had never done 5.5 miles in my life and I'm over the moon about it. I'm feeling very confident I can do a 10K come June 5th with a kick booty time at that!

Today's still kinda hectic but I'll be back on the thread in full swing probably tomorrow!

Oh yea, my birthday is 4/16 and I'll be doing the Princess Half in March!

Jess, that's a great time. On Saturday, I did 5.87 miles in 1:08, so it seems we're on the same wavelength.

Question for everyone: I have been only running (of course, I haven't gone farther than 3 miles yet), but I was talking to a friend about Jeff Galloway-style training. She loves it because she feels she recovers faster, can finish more strongly (which results in faster times), and is less prone to injury. I think she uses 3:1 intervals (3min run/1 min walk), but others do 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 5:1, whatever works for them.

Just curious to see what everyone here is doing. I would love to know!

Ds finished his first half in 2 hrs and 51 minutes. Not great but her did finish. He twisted his ankle at mile 6 and kept running till mile 9 and then wallked the rest. Then he ended up with a cold. So with only 5 left at his job he took a sick day:confused3

Some great times from everyone this weekend. I never got to really walk at the scout event but I spent almost 4 hours on my feet walking from side to side in the tent. I did do some walking yesterday and won't today because it is cloudy and cold. Maybe do some bike riding while watching a dvd.

Have a great evening everyone.

I attended a Jeff Galloway workshop a couple of years ago. He stressed the importance of taking walking breaks throughout your long run - makes your runs more efficient. If I recall correctly, the intervals are based on your pace. I mainly walk with a little running mixed in every now and then. At my peak, I would walk 3 minutes, run 2 minutes. I backed off to walk 4 minutes, run 1 minute to just walking. Jeff told me that it would be more efficient to walk 2 minutes, run 30 seconds vs. W4/R1. I really think it helped. My goal is to lose more weight so I can do more running again. I know other people who have used his methods and swear by them. Through your training, you'll find what works for you.

I think Galloway is a great plan. I do some walk breaks when I do long runs, but not on any schedule, just when I feel I need the break for a minute or if I am taking water/fuel. Does it work? I gotta say yes. I ran my first half marathon in 2:36, walked about 1.5 miles of it (mostly due to the fact that my chub-rub was so bad I was bleeding at the finish)

I think that there is no plan that is perfect for everyone. Each of us has to find what works best for US. My inlaws will not walk, not a step, because to them you didn't really "run" it if you walk at all. They also take no water, gatorade or any fuel during long runs or the half. (Can we say crazy??)

Do what feels right for you. And you will never go wrong.

On another note, you all may remember my questioning whether running with my inlaws was a good thing since there were some issues there. I have made my stand, and I will be training alone primarily from now on.

I agreed to meet them yesterday morning, at 7:30. I went out early to do a mile before meeting up with them. So I timed it that I would be at the meeting spot at that time to run with them. I get there-they are already gone, no sign of them. Oh well, I keep going, no big. When I pass them on their way back, MIL won't even acknowledge me. Still no worries. I keep running, run my best time for that distance yet. Meet up with them at the end while they are walking, MIL still won't acknowledge me. FIL asks how I did, tell him, he is happy for me. Says, hey we should go run some 800's over at the track some time. MIL walks away, gets in her car and leaves. That was really it for me.

I have run the last two weeks alone and have had really great runs. I am less stressed during and after and I am running better. There is something to be said about running with a partner or a group, but until I find the right person or people, I am going to go solo. And while I am alone physically, I know I have good WISHer friends who tag along, if only in my mind!!

Thanks for listening to me vent. You guys rock!!:thumbsup2

That sounds like an interesting plan. :) I'm doing Couch-to-10k, and am currently doing 5:1 intervals. Really slow going today, but I did it.

Today's lesson: do not stop at Chipotle less than an hour before you run.

Well I ran 2.5 miles straight today!!! It took me about 37 min, which is a 15 min mile, which makes me very happy to see my time improving. I know I have 11 months to prepare for the princess, but I've had this fear of being swept. My goal is to run 3 miles next week, and then sign up for my first 5k in june. The race I'm going to do is for women and a few other women I know might be doing it also.

Veronica- wow, it sounds like you mil is a piece of work, and she can't tolerate things if they are not on her terms. I'm so glad you made a stand for yourself, and by the successful runs you've been having, you did the right thing. You are incredible, and we are definitely all supporting you!!

Thanks for the description of the garmin. It sounds awesome, and maybe after my first race, I will invest.

Mickeymomto2-I was thinking about doing more of a walk/run intervals lately. I ran 2 1/2 miles straight today, and want to finish the c25k and be able to run the full 3 miles, but I think my body would be better served if I do some walking too. I'm in week 8, which is supposed to be 3 runs for 28 min or 2.75 miles, so I did the first day, but I think I'm going to run a mile, the walk a bit, and try to do the full 2.75 running with walking in between 2 days, and the long straight run one day/week. My hips do ache a bit tonight, but the rest of me feels pretty good.

Susie- Good luck with the half marathon. It must be so emotional for all involved. This is the 15th anniversary, I believe. My parents anniversary is april 19th, and I remember going over to pick them up and take them out to lunch and they were riveted to the tv. My dad died later that year, but it's how I remember their last anniversary together. It is amazing to see the strength of the survivors. My heart goes out to them.

Jess- Hope your son was better for the baptism. Sounds like a wondeful day. I bet you burn some extra calories wearing them heels.

Lisa- maybe we'll get our garmins before the princess!!

Dona- so glad your son did well in his first half. Gives me inspiration that I will get there too.

Keep up the incredible running and walking!!

Veronica ~ I totally understand what you are saying here! I used to run with my neighbor and really enjoyed the company, but I always found myself stressing and really not enjoying the actual runs...I'm sure I was putting more pressure on myself than maybe she was really putting on me but she is a much faster paced runner and I would always "kill" myself trying to keep up with her pace and I didn't want to ever say that I needed to take a break because I didn't want to mess up her training run....so now although it is really hard sometimes to face 12 miles alone on a trail I find that I am doing much better because I'm not pushing myself to the brink of exhaustion. I'm taking my walking breaks, etc... A running partner definitely has to be a right fit...

My two cents on the Jeff Galloway plan...I too think it is great. I don't necessarily stick to a 3:1, 4:1 or whatever, but last year at the Disneyland Half Marathon I was by myself so I decided that I would run with one of the Pacers...I choose the 2:30 pacer. It was the BEST experience in a run I've ever had. This girl had done near a hundred Marathons and I don't know how many half marathons and she was great at keeping us on pace. Every mile we walked. EVERY mile.... she had something on her wrist that told her at what time we should be at each mile. If we were there early...we took longer walk breaks or if she saw that we were going too fast she'd slow our pace down. Our finish time...2:29. It really was the best experience I've ever had. Although it wasn't really the Jeff Galloway plan it was similar in that she made us take walk breaks. She said that she's finished every one of her Marathons in the same fashion.

Another piece of advice I've gotten on the walk breaks is to walk when you get to a fluid station. Take the water/Gatorade and sip it while briskly walking to the other end and then start back running. I've been told that very little time is actually lost doing this. I did this method at the Princess Half Marathon and would have finished at the 2:30 mark if I hadn't stopped to have pictures made! :lmao: But Heck...I couldn't pass Mickey & Minnie up!

I agree that everyone has to find their own method though...Trying to keep up with the friend that is faster paced will only bring on injuries...

Now, with all that said I'm headed to the treadmill...had to work late and didn't get to go for my run right after work....ugh, I hate it when that happens!

Have a GREAT Tuesday everyone!

Patsy, what's a pacer?

I may not be using the correct term, but the pacer runs the half marathon or marathon and will finish the run in a certain designated time. I guess they are appointed to that position by the race organizers. Like, last year at the DL Half....they had runners holding balloons on sticks or signs on sticks with a time written on it...like 2:00; 2:15, 2:30, etc...so I chose the 2:30 time holder and just kept her balloons in my sight the whole time. You just choose your time you'd like to finish in and find that person in the coral and run with that person. I didn't sign up ahead of time or anything. The Princess Half didn't have them. DL has had them each year that I've done it. The first year I didn't run with the pacer but I did the second year and it was great.

Hopefully this makes sense....
