We are WDW vets considering a trip to DL. We were looking at either the end of April or mid May. If it was May it would be after Mothers Day but before Memorial Day.

I have been trying to educate myself but I am still confused. It seems like April would still have Spring Break crowds but May would get into Grad Nights.

Since Fantasmic will be down we would just need one weekend night to see Paint the Night and the fireworks since WOC seems to be every night. Did I get that right?

We would probably stay 3 or 4 nights and then do other things on the west coast.

I would appreciate any thoughts you could share!

We were there in April, 2013 (19th through 24th), and we had crowd levels in the 1s and 2s. It was awesome from a crowd perspective; however, the parks closed quite early every weeknight (like, before dark, even). We still had time to do most of the stuff we wanted.

During April, spring break crowds really only persist for a week or so after Easter. I went in mid-May last year and it was wonderful with low crowds, but our last park day was the day before grad nights started, so I can't comment on those. So far, the 2016 calendar is showing PTN and fireworks everyday, not just weekends (highly unsual). WOC is shown nightly as well.

I think either of your dates would really be fine.

Thanks. Easter in late March this year so hopefully April would be ok. Our dates in May seem like they would definitely line up Grad nights so that concerns me.
