April "Fool"ing around with the Goofs

I got in 10 sloppy miles in 100 minutes...right knee was very tight for about 5, then it loosened up, and I was run with little to no pain...for me, I was flying.

Lap speed ranged from over 11 to 9:25.

Not bad for a fat guy recovering from surgery...

Mike

Great job, you guys! The boys are really racking up the miles and minutes for us! Mike, I'm glad to hear the knee decided to get with the program after "only" 5 miles of feeling tight.

I did an 8K today and finished in the top 30, which sounds really impressive until I tell you that I was actually the dreaded Dead Last Finisher. There were only 27 of us running the darn thing. (The 8K race was dovetailed in, as an afterthought I'm sure, to be part of a decent-sized local duathlon.) I felt good until mile 3, when my IT band jumped up and said, "Hey, remember me?" The self-proclaimed "slow" runners had kept a pace under 11-minute miles, and I'd made the mistake of trying to keep up with them instead of my usual long run 12:30 pace, so it's no wonder I had a flare up after 3 miles. I walked most of the remainder of the course, but at least I got to chat with the TNT tri coach who had volunteered to bring up the rear.

Oh well, DLF>DNF>>DNS, right? I'm so honored the WISHers have a slogan that's all about me!

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

And now for a bit of silliness, just because... :teeth: The mixer starts here.

This week's mixer theme is "Superpowers That Would Be More Trouble Than They're Worth," and your question:

What would be the superpower you would end up being granted?

Some examples:
  • The ability to tell the future, but only one minute ahead of time.
  • Super-strength, but only in your thumbs.
  • The ability to read the minds of people whose language you don't understand.
  • The ability to see through one layer of clothes.
  • Super breath, strong enough to knock down your opponents. Unfortunately, it's because you're smells like garlic and you always have that power.

Of course, your superpower is unique to you. So feel free to tell us what you would do with your power or why you got so lucky as to be given it. :rolleyes1 Bonus points--again, they're worth nothing--for telling us what superpowers you think other WISHers might get. (Keep it DIS-friendly, though, folks!)

Morning Goofs.

Busy day for me with packing, printing boarding passes, cleaning up, downloading movies to the Touch, etcetera. I amongst that I need to work too. Trying to do things as I remember them so I don't forget them later!!

I had a great 12 mile run yesterday. I had 14 on and Cecelia advised 10 so I split the difference. I felt really good and held an 11:06 mpm average pace. I was surprised when I got home as I felt a little slower but all in all I am happy and I feel like I am trained well enough to finish this. Still nervous, don't get me wrong. When Dave (Windwalker) posts that his number is 28,something, I get a sick feeling in my stomach. That's a lot of people!!

Nice job over the weekend everyone. I am going to update the spreadsheet with my numbers. I won't be back on until Monday the 27th. Miss me while I'm gone and think of me next Saturday. All :wizard: that day will be appreciated.

Cecilia, Liz and Patrick, see you on Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :woohoo::woohoo:

Lisa Have a great time at Nashville!

My training partner ALMOST had me talked into skipping today's swim and going to breakfast.

Good thing I was driving, or I'd be here with a stomach full of an Omega skillet, instead of being the proud owner of 2400 yards in 50 minutes in the pool. He decided to bag the swim after about 15 minutes...no reflection on him, some days you got it, some days not so much.

That said, I thought I was going to die; I'm kind of motivated now, so I might try to make up the 45 minute spin I missed yesterday...I was too lazy to get out the bike trainer, and it was raining pretty much all day, so I couldn't get interested enough to ride outside, either.

Stick with it goofs; the rewards are worth it!

Mike

Morning Goofs!

I'm sore now, and later will be in all kinds of hurt. The local Y is doing what they call the "60 Mile Mountain Challenge". Basically, outside miles count normally. But, in order for treadmill miles to count, you run the first half mile at 3%, and then add .5% for each extra half mile. When you hit the top of the "mountain", you get to start decreasing your incline at the same rate.

For example - today, my first half mile was at 3%, then .5 at 3.5%, .5 at 4%, .5 at 4.5%, .5 at 5%, and .5 at 5.5%. The next two miles I did flat, so they don't count. Tomorrow, when I start my run, I have to pick up at the 6% mark if I want to count it. Most of the mountains are anywhere from 5 to 6 miles up (and the same amount down).

So I had three miles of progressively harder inclines, and then a couple "easy" miles - much faster, but flat, so it felt like I was flying.

Lisa - Good job on the 12 miler. You've trained hard for this - you'll do fine.

Mike - Good thing I wasn't there. Breakfast can be hard to resist. Good job on the pool.

Good luck Lisa, can't wait to hear all about it!! Have fun and run fast!!

Wow, good job Goofs! Everyone seems to be doing well! :cheer2:

Yesterday I walked the neighborhood while my oldest rode her bike. I'm guessing it was around 2 miles and maybe 35 minutes? Normally I wouldn't count this in my own log, but I'm definitely counting it in the Goof's log. ;)
We have some new ducks at our neighborhood lake and we named them Snow White, Cinderella and Prince Charming. :)

This morning officially started my Peachtree training. I ran 2 miles in 22:21. I'm really struggling. I keep trying to slow myself down, but it is like I wanna go at my old speed. I keep having this nagging feeling in the back of my head to just give up, but I promise I won't!

Good luck to all of you going to the CMM! You're gonna rock! And remember those miles count as double! :thumbsup2

To all my Goofs going to CMM, have a great time. I wish I was going to be there, but I'll be thinking of you.

And to Lisa, a very special :thumbsup2. You're going to do great. :cheer2:

A couple of other hellos!

SAHD: Wow, that Mountain Challenge sounds like it's a killer WO. Or just a killer. :lmao: A very good challenge, well-designed. Hope you're not in too much pain.

Mike: Wise words, wise man. Sometimes also a wise guy, but that's what I like about you.

Kim: I would be proud to be DLF next to you. A true athlete knows she's competing with herself and doing the best she can. :worship:

Shan: WTG with the commencement of Peachtree training.

Steve: I like to make up my own course, sometimes. Mainly because I won't ask for directions either.

Maura: Goggle eyes accentuate your beautiful features, eyes you could just (*snicker*) drown in. (I'm so sorry, I had to release to lame little word play into the wild because I couldn't take care of it.)

SAHD: Wow, that Mountain Challenge sounds like it's a killer WO.
I agree! I don't like to do any kind of incline on the TM, so that would just about destroy me. Best of luck with the challenge!

I went for a 1-mile "stress relief" walk this afternoon. Got back to my desk and the stress was still there, plus more stuff came up that made me even more stressed, so I went back out for another mile. Too bad the work was still here when I got back. :sad2: Oh well. I was planning on staying late anyway, so the 32 minutes away from my desk shouldn't make much difference in the amount of work I get (or don't get) done today.

I'm thinking about doing some of my training "long runs" as long walks instead. I'm afraid my IT band will flare up during the DL half or the WDW marathon, so I want to work on speeding up my walk pace and increasing my walking endurance just in case. I'd love to know that I can walk faster than the sweep pace so I can be semi-prepared should disaster strike and I'm unable to run/walk the full distance as planned. Any thoughts?

Hi Goofs!

Ok I know I am only doing the half but I am loving this tamper thingy right now. Allergies have kicked in full gear and I NEED the rest! Enjoy the flowers Shan cause they are killing me!

Kim - The trick to avoiding It band issues is to build your mileage SLOWLY. I suggest building your miles to as high a sustainable level as you can & then start adding in some speed to that. Also, with ITbands you HAVE to respect your rest days. No shopping on rest days! Not even the grocery store.

Mike - Glad you stuck to your exercise! Its tough some days and you have to take pride in those small victories!

Yesterday I walked the neighborhood while my oldest rode her bike.
We used to do this! We'd take the kids to the trail and the girls would be ride their bikes and keep up with their Dad while I ran along beside my son. It lasted for a couple of very pleasant months and we got a bunch of 5 mile sunday runs that way. Then one day, I got to the turn around point with my son and I thought I was going to die. I told Dh to take him back with them and that he might have to carry me if I couldn't make it back. Dh clocked him on the way back - he was riding at 8 minute miles. That was the end of those runs.....

Take care everyone!
Cecilia

Good job on your 8K Kim. I had a DLF once back in August. It was a fundraiser for the university's cross country team. The only people running were members of the XC team and our local running club. Yeah, I didn't think I stood much of a chance.

I was actually running with a girl from the XC team toward the end and we both started sprinting for the finish line. These old legs just couldn't keep up with her and I finished a few seconds behind.

I just ran 5.1 trail miles at our local marsh/bird sanctuary. It was my first time exploring that place and it was really neat. I got to see a lot of critters. All the chirping and sounds of the water was very zen-like. It was a really cool experience and I'm glad I didn't wear headphones.

It was about 65 degrees which was a real scorcher for what I'm used to so I slowed down pretty quickly. I picked it up at the end as I was shooting for a sub-10 minute mile. I finished just under at 50 minutes.

Just got done with a cold 4.1 miles in 40 minutes, so I'm slowly getting back to where I was with the run.

Steve, sounds like a great place that you found to run...I sometimes will run at the Morton Arboretum here in Lisle; very peaceful.

We also have a nice trail here that I like to run early in the mornings called Centennial trail...you go from forest to prairie back to forest. I could have my meat freezer filled for a year if I could harvest 1/3 of the deer that I see there each time I run!

oh well....thats what happens when you live near people who think meat grows in cellophane packaging...

Have an awesome day Goofs!

Mike

Hi guys Today is our day to find out whether we still have jobs. Signs in our group are that we will. I brought donuts AND bagels (all of you who hate simple carbs are free to leave the area!)

I didn't feel like swimming or running today, so I decided to lift weights instead. The thing I am finding about tri training is that since I have to do 6 workouts (2 each swim, run bike) it makes my schedule fairly rigid--even for the puny sprint tri that I am planning for. It's beginning to feel somewhat stifling. Oh well, at least it's exercise!

Kim Good for you, DLF or not!

Mike Glad to hear your knee is getting back to normal and your runs are getting faster.

SAHDad I like the sound of the Mountain Challenge--not that I ever could/would do it, just like the sound of it !

Shan Baby steps...don't try to go too far or too fast. You WILL get there over time.

Cecilia & Lisa & Liz & Patrick Happy tapering and race prep.

Maura

Quick update....My job is safe, but some of my former colleagues are currently being escorted out.

Maura

Crap Maura! I'm glad you are safe, though!

Hey, I'm trying to figure out Twitter. Anyone on there? I'm BCVfan.

Off to run a 2 miler.

Nothing much today. I've been sick since Friday or Saturday, but I can't exactly call in sick to work. So, instead of running four or five miles, I'll just do one or two, without incline tonight, and hope I feel better tomorrow.

Cecilia, thanks for the IT band advice. I guess I'll keep it under 3 miles for a while, since that's about where I started hurting on Sunday. So frustrating, though, because my first official long run on my DL half training plan is scheduled for 5/2.

Steve, thanks for sharing your DLF story. It really does help to know I'm not the only one. Your trail run sounds beautiful!

Maura, I'm so glad you popped in to let us know your job wasn't among those that were cut. Sorry to hear about your colleagues. I'm sure this is a tough day all around. Hugs.

Rich, I hope you feel better soon.

Best wishes for a happy taper and a great race to Cecilia, Lisa, Liz, and Patrick!

Maura - glad you're job is safe but certainly know what it's like to watch others leave.

Mike - we use the Centennial after work for bike speed runs. Still lots of deer then, too. We rode the OPRT Saturday - nice trail. Did the 5K at the Arboretum last fall - have to get there more this year.

Looking forward to CMM this weekend. Patrick has the "...it's my first full ... what did I get myself into" thing going on right now. Keep telling him he'll be fine. Just has to remember to run his own race.

Thanks for all the well wishes! Will post pics and report after for sure. We leave Friday at 4am to drive down.
