April "Fool"ing around with the Goofs

Joanne - party at the back in Jan! DH and I decided want to enjoy it - stay together, take lots of pics instead of just head down and moving forward.

Cecilia - I am excited about the Goofy! I have 3 half marathons in the next 6 weeks so that'll help keep mileage up. I spend most of the summer cycling and want to do a century ride this year (can't believe I agreed to that) so that will help as well. Just have to figure out when to start actual Goofy training and how to plan back-to-backs. Suggestions?

Lisa - you know you want to....Can room with us at villa if that'll help.

SAHDad - you going to be at Champaign Saturday? We're doing the half not the full but looking forward to the inaugural.

Maura - enjoy the 4 day weekend!

Mike - YAY on pain free knees!!

Big HELLO to everyone!

Didnt' get out last night. Just wasn't feeling right (achy all over) and with Saturday's race decided not to push it. Today is sunny, NOT windy and nice temps so will get in a walk before dinner. Tomorrow is 1/2 day so can head south. It's a 2.5 hr drive so dont' want to have to drive down the morning of.

Have a great day!

I didn't train as much as I should have for the Goofy, but I started doing back-to-back long runs in October or so. If you can get to the point where you can do a 10 on Saturday and a 20 on Sunday, you're set.

Well, just like you, I am heading down tomorrow. I'll leave sometime in the morning, because I want to have time to look around my college stomping grounds and see what has changed over the years. Are you doing the pasta feed?

We'll get in around 4.30 (Patrick has to work until 1p) and yep, have tickets to the pasta feed. Staying at the Holiday Inn.

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing! I was finally able to get outside for a run today, it is beautiful here in NJ! I have been really slacking on my training, and I have my 1/2 marathon in a month! YIKES! I did 5 miles today and felt fine, but we shall see what happens after this weekends LR of 10 miles!

Liz--Congrats on signing up for the Goofy! I had so much fun doing it this year, I signed up the day I got back from WDW in January for next year!! I never ever thought I would say it but I can't wait!! I started my official Goofy training in September. I followed a Higdon beginner marathon program and threw in a bunch of back to back runs throughout. The longest back to back I did was 9 and 18, and I was fine during the races, in fact, I did FAR better than I ever anticipated--I PR'd in the marathon!!!

Suzanne--I was wondering about Susie as well. I hope she is doing well!

Lisa--You can do it! You can definetely break 5:30 with the training you have done! Don't worry about it so much and just go for it! And, on another note, I thought I had a busy schedule...but you are WAY more busy than me, with all that you do!!!!

SAHDad--Good Luck this weekend!

Cecilia--I used to say the same thing about being tired all the time, so I went to the doctor and turns out that I have an underactive thyroid. Feeling tired and rundown is one of the symptoms. You may not have this at all, but it is just a thought.

To anyone I missed..sorry! Enjoy the holiday weekend!

Wow, quiet around here...spooky....

Just a quick check in to bump the thread. I am dry coughing like my yearly pneumonia spell and I am going to be a good girl, not run today and take care of myself and my lungs for a couple days and see if I can head it off at the pass. I should have seen this one coming...

Have a great weekend Goofs. Rich, best of luck Liz and Patrick too. Take care everyone!!!

Wow, it is quiet....

So I had yesterday off--the perfect amount of time to get in a quality workout, which I didn't. I took a rest day! I did take the dog for a walk and do some Internet searching for things for household repairs. And watch opening day (yeah, Tigers!) and the Masters.

Today, did a swim. 1000 yds. Guy started swimming in "my" lane without letting me know (Usually, people wait until you can see they're there and then ask/comment that they are going to share). Kicked me in the middle of the lane, I came up sputtering. When I commented to him that I would have appreicated his letting me know he was going to share and that he kciked me, he just told me "you were swimming in the middle of the lane". Well, duh, I wouldn't have been if you had just let me know (Which I did not say). He left after about 4 laps, because, as I told him, I'm a slow swimmer, plus I was doing drills. I can play nice, if you play nice.

Okay, off my soapbox. Time to finish taxes--6 reports (2 mine/DH, 2 DD, 2DS) and maybe go shop for some clearance bike clothing.

Maura

Just want to say Happy Easter to all those who celebrate.

DD is on Spring Break this week so probably no long walk day for me but I hope to get on the treadmill at home a couple of times. I've realized that I need to add the treadmill back into my exercise program as the bike infront of the TV just isn't doing it for me. So while my monthly times should remain about the same, my mileage will go down. I've got to shake it up alittle!

I started looking at some local races yesterday, and might sign up for two in the same week. Yikes! I just know that soon it will be too hot to race, so I've got to get a couple in while I still can.

I ran the 5K trail yesterday. The huge hill kicked my rear again, but I did run more of it than I used to. I finished in 38 minutes.

Have a great weekend and/or a happy Easter and/or Passover.

Hey Goofs!
Back from Hilton Head late last night. Had some rain, cold, wind and then finally some sun. :yay: Girls got a little beach and pool time before we had to leave and I still managed to get a little sun burned. :rolleyes1
Hope everyone has been well since I left. Apparently the time has come for us to get with the real world and get a laptop and/or cell with email cause we missed some important emails while gone. :headache: So maybe next time we go out of town I'll be able to check in. :surfweb:

So the big news is I ran for the first time since my surgery six weeks ago. It was tough, but I did it. My face was red as fire each time I finished. Very scary looking! :scared: So here's my runs -

Monday - 2 miles / 22:34 / pace -11:17
Tuesday - 2 miles / 22:41 / pace - 11:21
Thursday - 3 miles / 32:25 / pace - 10:48 :woohoo:

Also, got in some bike time going to the beach that I want to give to Beth, Lisa and Mike for being so supportive of me when I was feeling like a lazy bum. You guys are the best! :grouphug: These miles were done with a big smile on my face as I was following my daughters riding to and from the beach. :goodvibes So please add to your own totals -

Beth - 3 miles / 40 minutes
Lisa - 3 miles / 40 minutes
Mike - 3 miles / 40 minutes

Mike, I saw your post from the 5th and I want you to please keep those 5 miles and 90 minutes for yourself. That was super sweet of you, but I feel like this was my week to get back out there.

Sooo, I'm back in the game. Go Goofs! :cheer2:

Welcome back Shan.....in more ways than one! Glad to see you got some miles in, bet it felt good!

Beth

1) Welcome Back SHAN! Way to go! :cheer2::cheer2::yay::yay::woohoo::woohoo:

2) Maura: While I'm astounded at the rudeness of that guy...I wish I could say i were surprised. Normally if I'm wanting to get into a lane, I'll just sit on the edge with my feet in the water...they always see it. What a jerk. Good for you for keeping your cool and staying with your plan.

We drove down to Champaign yesterday so that I could relay with my nephew, brother and SIL for the inaugural Illini marathon. VERY crowded, but very pleasant...although the start was a wee bit chilly.

Got in a 10k, pretty much knee pain free miles, so I'm feeling pretty darn good about that!

Humorous story, when I came into view of my brother (whom I was handing off to), and my wife and kids, I was about 1/4 mile away. My brother leans over to DW and says "Oh no, he looks hurt."

and pauses.

and says "Maybe he just looks like that cause he's a big guy"

pauses "but he looks hurt"

Finally DW says, "no, he's not hurt, he has to work harder than you since he's 60 lbs heavier than you...graceful isn't something thats easy to do when you are 215 lbs." :lmao:

Then we drove home, and fired up the smoker since it was 50 and sunny here in Chicago. Sat outside and had a couple of drinks with DW while the chicken smoked, and watched our little guys riding bikes and playing at the park across the street from our house.

Really, it was a heckuva good day!

Mike

Hey there Super Goofs! Just wanted to come by and wish everyone a Happy Easter! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, spedn some great family time, get some miles in (unless this is your off day, and eat some good food!!

Keep on moving and motivating!!
Bryan:cheer2::yay::banana:

got in a run of 6.33 miles in 1:04:05, 10:07 mpm pace.

Hopped on the bike for 1:24:22 and got in 22.25 miles.

Not a bad day, and my knees hardly hurt!!!

Happy Easter folks.

Mike

I'll write a race report later (and do some updating of the sheet too), but yes, I ran the Illinois Marathon yesterday. And yes, I PR'ed, taking 10:09 off my previous marathon time. I still have a ways to go until that coveted BQ time, but yesterday was, all things considered, a very good race.

Happy easter!
Wow! Lots of good reports today!
Way to go on your new PR SAHDad!
and awesome job on your relay Mike! Even better that there was little knee pain!
Way to come back strong Shan!! Those first few weeks back always seem harder than you think they should. Take it slow and you will be just fine in no time!
Sorry about the cough Lisa. Take care of yourself!

hmm. I started training for goofy in August but I ramped up very slow to begin with. You sound like you are already up there so I would say to keep up the training you are doing now as your base and then start Goofy Training in September.
I have a different philosophy about the back to back runs than most. Since I am an "older" runner, I did not do back to back long runs. My typical training week has me running 3 or 4 days in a row already and the older you are, the more important those rest days become. So what I did was to up my mid week runs to much higher than typical mileage 8-10-8 most weeks and then run my long run after a rest day.
I was pretty sick during the middle of my Goofy training and had to severely cut my mileage to try to recover. I was expecting that the marathon part was going to be miserable and that I would walk alot of it. Instead, I PR'd.

I really believe that the real trick to having a good experience at the Goofy is to learn to get your body recovered very quickly. There are all sorts of tricks that people use and some will work better for you than others. If I were you, I would use these half marathons to test what works best.

For me, I lose my appetite after the half but if I force myself to eat, I recover faster. I also took extreme ice baths after the half each time. I am talking massive amounts of ice for 20 minutes. Its miserable but it really makes a huge difference. Then there is hydration, nutrition, etc etc ad nauseum. Luckily, you have months to figure it out!

:stitch: 'OHANA MONDAY MIXER :stitch:

The mixer starts HERE on the thread.

A spring chick told me that many of us gave up goodies for Lent. Now that Lent has ended, Monday is a good time for this mixer question:

What is one healthy food you always have in your kitchen? What is one less-than-healthy food you always have in your kitchen?

Feel free to post pictures, talk about how the foods help you in your training (either as nutrition or reward), and confess to guilty pleasures and happy indulgences!

Happy Monday everyone!! I did not get a chance to say Happy Easter so rewind and add that too!! :goodvibes

This new computer has a mind of its own. It is just randomly eating my documents so I have to stay off most sites as IT keeps checking in to see what it is doing at any given time. You will see little of me during the day. I am lurking though...:surfweb:

Marathon training continues. My 20 mile run yesterday was interrupted by 40 mph winds and a coughing spell when one gust hit me head on while negotiating a hill. I could not stop coughing and had to call DH for a ride. I did finish the miles with the walking DVD so all are done, just not fast. I averaged an 11:45 pace with the walking.

Rich, super congrats. :cheer2::cheer2:

Liz and Patrick, how did the race go for both of you????

Cecilia, I am finding rest days more important right now too. I was biking on my optional days but now I am just resting and my next LR is better because of it.

Mike, Yay for a painless run! I am sure you still look great at 215 no matter what your DW says!!!!

Shan, thanks for the miles back but I really wish you would keep them. I am racking up lots right now. How about adding them back to you and when I need them (cuz I am sure I will) you can donate toward my total. Deal???

Beth, way to hang in with the consistency.

Joanne, how is Shamus?

Kim, great job on the race. I have a love/hate relationship with hills myself.

Maura, :wizard:.

Suzanne, your consistency puts us all to shame, well except for Beth!

Everyone else, :grouphug:

Have a great day everyone!!

Lisa - OK, that is a deal.
Congrats on the 20 miler. That is an awesome pace given the wind, coughing and having to switch over to the DVD. I'd be happy with that pace for a 2 miler right now!
