April 26 - May 3, 2008 Caribbean Crazy Cruisers Part 2!

it's so weird, I still have my "sea legs". I never felt like I was still on the ship in any of the ports but now at home I keep swaying back and forth.

I miss the Magic!!!!!!

Kay - Steph has the same problem and also had it from our last cruise. She said it went away, but it took her 2 weeks. She told me to tell you that she also didn't feel it in the ports. Here is a thread on CruiseCritic from folks experiencing the same sensation:

We arrived safely back home too. We got home about 2 hours ago...we wanted to drive straight through to be home last night around midnight, but joseph started vomiting about 3 hours into the drive from the ship yuck. He was sick every 45 minutes like clockwork so we decided to call it quits about 3 hours from home last night. I hope they sanitized the nursery!!!
Other than that I still feel like I am swaying, but no one else does. It is better then yesterday though.
We never made it to the Dismeet...I was so excited that our luggage came I started to unpack and chris took the kids to the club. I was supposed to pick them up on the way but was enjoying the over the shoe holder so much I lost track of time. He walked in when they were announcing the drill because the clubs were closed.
Well its back to laundry........

Hi Guys! What a wonderful time we had on the "Magic". I'm so sad it's over. Naturally I cried during the final show....it's so depressing knowing that it all has to end. Anyway, it was nice meeting all of you at the DIS meet and bumping into some of you along the way.

I am glad to hear I am not alone in feeling like I am still on the boat. I am sitting in my chair at my desk and I keep feeling like I'm going to fall forward, and when I walk down the hallway, I feel as though I am swaying "to and fro"! Can't wait until these "sea legs" go away....it was actually making me sick to my stomach this morning.

Anyway, just wanted to say "hey" and that we had a "magical" time on the Disney Cruise. I'll be looking to read some of the trip reports that our fellow DIS members have. Who knows, if I have time, I might do one myself!

As they say on the "Magic"....it's not good bye....it's "Til we meet again"!

Dawn

Eileen and I arrived home about 8:30 last evening. Did a little unpacking mostly dirty clothes. Eileen was off today so wash is mostly caught up. I decided to go into work today sense someone on board the Magic was so kind as to share their cold with me about Thursday figured I rather be at work feeling rotten . We re booked a May 23rd 2009 eastern Tortuga cruise. I too still have my sea legs. hope everyone else arrived home safely. maybe one day some of us will get to cruise together again. get to meet everyone... Mike

Mike
I too developed a mild cold/sinus condition on Thursday nite. I didn't feel well at Castaway Cay, so we only spent a few hours there. It was really nice meeting you and Eileen in person on the ship. Good luck to you and yours in the future. :)

I started my trip report to those of you interested. Link is in my signature! :) Still working on getting the pics resized and such!

I have a minor cold too. Almost lost my voice yesterday, but it's better today, thank goodness, considering I have to talk to people all day long at work!

we're still at WDW. We had a great cruise too. It was great seeing so many of you around the ship. I missed meeting several of you though... Seems like our paths never crossed. Where were you hiding? ;)
like Lctonra? Totally couldn't find you! And birdlover. I think I know who you are--remember me? I was the one who let you and your mom know where cove cafe was :)

But anyway. Great cruise. We're booked again for January 31st of 2009 with my parents (eastern w/ a stop at st croix.

Ok. Back to the fun at WDW.

We are home safe and sound! Had an early morning flight out of Orlando this morning.

We had a wonderful time on the cruise and we're so blessed to have met all the DISers we did. Just about everyone seemed to be having a great time!

Congrats to all who booked future cruises. We got confirmation for a future cruise....only problem is we didn't book one! :scared1: Called DCL this morning. The reservation number shows up on their end as someone else's name but the info on the hard copy is all ours. I'm going to fax them a copy tomorrow. Strange. :confused3

We had a great time at WDW and had the pleasure of meeting up with Karen, Mike and the kids for one last meal having a late lunch at Kona Cafe. I miss them already!

Mary, I'm glad you made it home safely.

PS: I agree 100% with Kay (Dreamcometrue) who replied to the thread on the main board titled "Have you ever seen/met a celebrity onboard?" She answered "I saw Mark and Mary, our very own DIS boards moderators!" :worship: It was both a pleasure and an honor to meet you face-to-face. It even got me in trouble with my DW at the pre-meet: I was supposed to be heading to the restroom while she waited in line for the club/lab check-in. Twenty minutes later she sent my DS to find me. When I met her in line, she got even more pissed when she found out that I hadn't even made it to the restroom yet. LOL....

We too had a great cruise, the kids begged and pleaded to not go home, (I think it is all the homework they have to make up). It was great to see Mary and Karen and families every night at dinner, and I am still floating after that dessert.

That dessert made up for all the nights I could not have the triple chocolate cake due to it being made on equipment that also touches tree nuts. (I have a severe nut allergy and thanks to the diligence of our awesome servers they REFUSED to serve me anything that touched nutty surfaces,. . .no comments from the peanut gallery!!)

We did not rebook. . . . but we are sure that we WILL cruise again, we just don't know when yet, and cannot commit to anything, despite really wanting to. We also think that we would not cruise with the kids. The kids had a great time, and they are not happy to hear that we would even think about going without them, the only way we WOULD take them is if they were over 18, so we could all be together.

It was so much fun to just run into other DISers at unexpected moments.

I too also have some sea legs left. It is MUCH better today, and I hardly notice it most of the time.

We did have a interesting thing happen, another family took our youngest DS suitcase home from the airport, but after putting in a "lost baggage claim" I came home and googled them up, called them and they returned his suitcase, picked up their own, and then the airline delivered our suitcase to our house on Sunday, and I will add that Alec was thrilled to have to wear sneakers and jeans to church. . . . sneaky sneaky me,. . .it was a casual sunday anyway, we had a small carnival at church, so EVERYONE had on jeans and sneakers!! And he thought I was just the coolest to let him wear "play" clothes to church, nope. . . he quickly found out that he was not as special as he thought! Mom is still cool though!.

Thank you to all of you who helped make our first cruise very special and memorable. I hope to be able to cruise will some or all of you again sometime in the near future.:thumbsup2

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. We had an awesome serving team! Definitely one of the best teams I've had in our 11 cruises. I miss them both so much.

just posted my report over at www.amychristopher.blogspot.com and michaels got some pics over at www.valtool.blogspot.com

mary, thanks for always making me smile

you guys are awesome

Amy - seeing you always brought a smile to my face. We did seem to be on the same flow as it seemed we saw you just about every where we went. :)

Before we part ways, here are a few photo's I'd like to share of Steph who went out today to do more gator studies.

That's the space shuttle in the right corner of the photo. The same one that was supposed to launch on April 24.

I hope that before everyone goes their separate ways that everyone checks in at least once and lets us know what they thought of the cruise. Did they enjoy it? What did they like, what didn't they like, etc. I love hearing about cruises I've been on from different points of view.

We had a fantastic time, the most amazing vacation and my son had the best time. I have nothing negative to say and will probably travel on the Magic to do the Western at some point but our next cruise will be Royal Caribbean for sure. I have been on many many cruises, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and some others and Royal Caribbean is my favorite. Since I have a child I wanted to experience a Disney cruise and I'm so happy I took him. One thing I am curious about is why people without kids would ever want to go on a Disney Cruise, especially more than once. It boggled our minds to no end. For those that have only been on Disney you really should try another cruise line, you don't know what you are missing!

Hi Everyone! Just got home today...had a great time on the cruise and enjoyed meeting everyone at the meet. We also ended up with the cold at the end of the cruise that seemed to be going around:sick: ....we actually met another couple that was on our cruise over at Downtown Disney yesterday who were also sick with the same cold! Not sure how that could happen with the amount of hand washing I saw while on board.

We sure had great weather though!! I heard that prior to our arrival in the USVI's, it had rained for 4 days straight! After the cruise, we then spent 4 days in a very crowded WDW...actually happy to be home!

We re-booked on board for another Eastern in 10/09 (connecting cat 7 staterooms), although hoping to transfer the reservation for a better 2010 itinerary. Funny thing, there was another confirmation in the mail today for a cat 4 room for another cruise that we didn't even book...what's going on with DCL reservations? I'm calling tomorrow to figure it out.

Looking forward to reading trip reports and hope you're all adjusting well to the reality of life at home!!

Glad you had a good time.

The answer to your curiosity is very easy to answer, actually. We happen to like family-friendly over true 'adult' offerings. Entertainment like Freddy Fusion and John Charles are far more fun for us than 'Vegas style' shows. And for the adult side of things there are certainly things like Palo and the Spa and Beat Street after 9pm to go to if we're so inclined. My wife has been on other cruise lines, she's sailed lines that don't even exist anymore, such as Sitmar. I have not, yet, but know enough about the other lines to know that which might attract others to other lines really doesn't hold a lot of interest for me in most cases.

There certainly are exceptions. We have been eyeing NCL for the fact they are the only line to be able to sail Hawaii without the foreign port thing. We've been to Oahu, and want a sampling of the other islands. But, unlike what NCL's commercials tout, I actually like the structure of dinner that DCL offers over the freestyle system where you have to make reservations yourself to go to dinner each night if you want a nice sitdown meal, not a buffet. I'm all for a vacation that is as effortless as possible, and that DCL does provide to my point of view. As I know right when I board that ship that I'm going to be having dinner at this time each night and will have an opportunity to dine in each restaurant onboard, with Palo being the only option. And even there, due to being a repeat cruiser, have a good choice of setting even that up far in advance of actually going on vacation, if we're so inclined to add it.

To sum up, to each, their own interests. Ours tend to be in line more with DCL than other lines.

The Good:

- Meeting some of the Dis'ers here and there and everywhere! (Sam I am). Also, sharing my excitement, anxiety, enthusiasm, and even nightmares with others for many months leading up to this vacation.

- DD5 loved the Oceaneer's Club. She is easily pleased, but I think she loved the character visits the best. The best thing was when Belle made a surprise visit and read them a story. She didn't make any friends to speak of, but she never complained of being lonely. DD5's favorite thing to do was taking photo's with the princesses (Belle, Snow White, and Cinderella). For some reason, we didn't see Ariel or Sleeping Beauty. All in all, DD5 had the time of her life. She was happy no matter what she did. I think she will remember this cruise for a long time (how much do you remember when you were 5?)! :)

- DS8 enjoyed the Oceaneer's Lab. He played night dodgeball on the sport's deck, the Wii, and even sang a song at karaoke (I wish I had been there for that). He's not so much into the characters anymore. He told me that he liked Ocean Quest the best, where he could just 'chill.' What 8 year old tells you he likes "to chill?" DS8 won a trophy for the Wild Toad race in the O-Lab. The counselor told us they don't give many trophies away.

- Asking the taxi driver to take us on a personal tour of St. Thomas, and getting a history lesson to go with it. He took us up to Drake's seat and the spot overlooking the cruise ships. Such beautiful views. His van was run down; We didn't think he was going to make it up some of the hills. Putt putt, bang bang. Yes, the van back-fired a lot, but he made it! :scared:

- Feeding the fish dog biscuits at Coki Beach. Beautiful parrot fish would eat right out of your hands.

- The show theme's were great. Simon and Alfred had me in tears. :rotfl2: The Farewell show was very moving. I tried to be discreet - I don't think anyone saw me wipe that tear. :rolleyes1 Grown men don't cry. Grown men don't cry.

- DW's hot stone massage. She really didn't want to go. Afterward, she admitted that it was awesome.

- The nightly towel animals with chocolate. I especially loved the sea turtle, which required a brown blanket for the body and a white towel for the head.

The Bad:

- Contrary to popular opinion, I didn't really care for the food, except at Palo's. The menu's describe some elegant fancy dishes, but all in all, the food was either too bland or too chewy. DW and I commonly taste each other's food, but that didn't do it any justice.
- I tipped our room steward well and he tried to be nice, but he always seemed to take so long to get to our room. We even put the sign out on the door for service. It seems that on our 3-nite cruise, our room was always made up when we returned from breakfast and the beds were ready right after dinner.
- The room Air Conditioner: We sleep with the A/C turned down to 74 degrees at night. I had to turn the A/C all the way down at nite, but we were always frozen when we awoke in the morning. This might have something to do with the sinus infection I developed on Friday.
- Picking up my DS8 from the O-Lab at 10:30pm when DW and DD are asleep and I am tired and ready for bed myself - only to have DS8 complain that he wasn't ready to leave the campout. Having to tell him no was hard.
- The actors: Sorry again, but neither DW or I felt the actors were great. They were just okay for us and the singing was average as well. Perhaps that's what Simon Cowell means when he says to contestants on AI that it would be suitable for a cruise ship. We saw the Broadway production of the Lion King in Orlando a couple of years ago, and it's hard not to compare the talent.
- DW enjoys laying around by the pool; I wanted to try some of the adult activities. We never seemed to get in sync.
- The rain forest: That was a waste of money for us.
- The fireworks: It's great that Disney is the only cruise line to do fireworks, but c'mon, they were a bit lame.

The Ugly:

- The folks walking around at the clothing optional beach in St. Maarten.
- No shade at Scuttle's in Castaway Cay.
- Allowing my DW to navigate in St. Maarten while I drove the rental car around the island; especially when we were under a time crunch to get back before the parade.
- Letting my DW wait in line while I chatted with Dis'ers in the terminal (when I was supposed to be going to use the restroom). DW was NOT happy. Not a good way to start.
- Deep tissue massage: When she did my back, it hurt!! DW says I'm a wus.
- Getting a sinus infection the nite before Castaway Cay.
- Sea turtles living in captivity at Coral World. A worker gave us a story about how they rehab'ed the turtles from hatchlings a few years ago. However, she didn't realize that DW and I have done extensive work toward sea turtle conservation. There was no way those turtles were 5 years old. We didn't see any visible injuries.
- Like many, I was raised to not waste food (you know - starving people in <insert country>). I really don't like to see all that food get wasted - I can't help it, but it bothers me.
- Having to throw away photo's at Shutters.

The Summary:

- Overall, it was an awesome vacation. That's why we booked another cruise for next year. pirate:

Wow, you really summed up. :thumbsup2

The food... I don't know what to say other than that's not the experience we had with it. But you also should know a bit more background, we don't eat out often. By that I mean if we go out to a nice place once or twice a month that's huge. And for our home dining, during the work week the less work we have to put into preparing a meal the better for us, so maybe our taste isn't all that refined. But I will say the one time we dined late seating we really didn't enjoy it just for the fact it was too late for us, made the food seem more bland to us than it probably was. As far as wasted, from the actual dining rooms the discarded goes to the incinerator, and yes it's a shame, but unavoidable really. But as far as foodstuffs on board, the crew galley gets a lot on their menu from whatever they have excess of in storage after we get our turn, so not as much is wasted as you may perceive.

And I warned you about St.Maarten. Now the question is will your eyes ever be the same? :lmao:

And Mary too thinks the massages can get a bit rough.. me, I'm one big knot until I get one. Yes, they're a bit painful as they work to loosen me up, but after I am so.. refreshed it's not funny, don't get anything like that back here at home.

About the Rainforest.. If I lived in a more temperate climate as you have down by you, I don't know if I'd do it either. Up this far north, a cold day can get to -20. Those heated loungers are just total bliss to me, as I already do that at work on days when I'm feeling extra achy, I'll go in the boiler room and spend a good amount of time just leaning up against the rear blast door which is about as warm as those get.

The room a/c.. if it's being that all over the place, that's when you call maintainance, there's something really wrong with it. I've read many times on the main forum about people who've had issues that required 'the call' to get it straight.

And totally agree with you about Shutters, they certainly do have the technology to do something a bit more modern than printing everything out. So you know, the photo group are a subcontractor, not related to the operation WDW has with Photopass.

As far as the fireworks, after seeing what they do at WDW with both Wishes and Illuminations, just about everything else is lame. :rotfl2:Seriously, there's probably limits of what they can have/use on board that they can't do the heavy hitters of the kind they use back on land. Fire risk is something I deal with every day at work. To me just the fact they are firing off any is impressive. Even on a ship constructed as fire resistant as these are, there are still risks in just carrying anything explosive on board.

Good morning everyone!

Randy - nice breakdown. Shows that it is all about personal preference as what is good on someone's list can be bad on someone else's. I'm happy to hear that you all enjoyed the cruise enough to book another one.

To address the question on adults only doing a Disney cruise. Mark addressed it well but I have to add my own spin. I have been cruising since the mid 70's and have cruised on a number of different lines. IMHO there is a difference in Disney. A little more elegant, a little more class. As to why I prefer Disney. Quite frankly because it makes me smile. I think it was Amy who said she always saw me smiling. Well that's because I like to think of myself as a happy person, happier when I'm on DCL and even happier when I meet up with with other DISers. Does this mean I'd never book another cruise line? No way! As Mark said we've actually looked into some other lines for other reasons. However for someone who loves Disney and wants to try cruising I'll recommend DCL every time.
