Applying resort discounts

In the past, I have always used a Disney travel agent to book our resort rooms. Next time, I would like to make the reservation myself so that I could inquire about it and make changes on my own.

I was wondering about applying discounts that come out after I book.

I usually try to book a AAA discount so I at least have something. If I do that when I make the reservation and then later a room only discount becomes available, will they change the AAA discount to the room only discount if my resort and dates work? Or will I be locked into the AAA discount? Do I need to book at rack rate to be able to use a room only discount later?

Thanks for any info about this!

Anything you book now can always be modified later if a better discount comes out. However, in order to take advantage of a discount, there has to be availability with the resort/room type you have booked in order to have it applied. Sometimes you have to be flexible with your resort/room type as having a reservation already in place does not guarantee a discount can be applied. Also keep in mind that if you book, for example, room only and a discount comes out that requires a package (i.e., free dining), the room only reservation would have to be cancelled/refunded and a package booked, requiring a new deposit. This works the same for going from a package to a room only reservation. Room only and packages are different reservation systems, so money paid toward one cannot be applied to the other. HTH :).
