If I book now & a discount comes out later do I have to cancel my existing reservation & re-book, or can they apply it to the one I have now & hopefully give a refund?

Yes, but there are two things that will determine it:

1) Whether there is availability for the discount in your specific resort and room for your dates and
2) Whether you are booked as a room only or a package

If there is availability for your specific resort (including specific room and dates), they will apply the discount. That means that if you are booked as a room-only (not a MYW package), you can apply a room-only discount, if that discount is available for your room and dates. If you want to change from a room only to a package that includes tickets or tickets and dining, you will have to rebook. If you want to change from a package that includes tickets or tickets and dining to a room-only reservation, you will also have to rebook. At least that's how it was in 2012. HTH!

We've applied a discount after booking three times. Very easy. No changes with the exception of the balance due. On two occasions we even changed the resort we initially booked due to the discount that changed our plans. Still, very easy. Our reservation # didn't change, and it doesn't affect your dining. Now... we hadn't paid off the entire amount prior to applying the discount. All that was paid was the deposit. I'm not sure how it would work if you had paid off your entire balance. It makes sense to have a refund, but I'm not sure how that would work. We don't pay off our balance until around the time it's due (45 day window??) for this reason...or at least until we see if there will be a discount that comes out that would change our balance due.

Just read the post above, and forgot those details. We always book room, dining, & ticket package initially and keep that, so those changes haven't affected us. We have ran into the issue of not enough available rooms of the resort we had originally planned to stay at for the promotion. We just switched resorts. It ended up being a blessing in disguise. They only set aside a certain number of rooms to apply for a particular discount code.

Thanks! I usually book a package with tickets & dining so that answers my question.

I am really hoping not to rebook. I usually pay off early & get it out of the way. I am hoping to keep the reservation number like you did. I want to make all my dining reservations as early as possible & don't want to have 2 different reservation numbers to remember. I probably make this more difficult that it has to be by booking early :) I have never had any patience!!

As the pp mentioned, there is no need to cancel/rebook as long as you don't change the reservation type, even if you are paid in full. If a discount comes out that you are able to have applied to your reservation and you don't have a balance due, you will just receive a credit for the amount of the discount, keeping everything the same, including the confirmation number :goodvibes.
