Applying discount to 3rd party booking?

Hi all! I’m trying to decide if I should book our Disney resort for May 2020 through Disney or a 3rd party site which offers a small discount. I know Disney can apply their discount to your reservation (often) if you call after it’s released, but what if you have booked elsewhere? Can they still apply it or are you up a creek?

My experience with lower rates Or discounts being released for any hotel on third party sites after you have booked, is that you have to cancel and rebook to get the lower rate.

And what I do is book a reservation with the new lower rate first, to be sure that it actually is available (have had issues with rooms and rates showing as available on third party sites but then they aren’t when try to book it). Then cancel the original reservation.
