I'm a new DVC member, and I'm trying to decide if I should use points for my August vacation, or whether I should stick with the MYW w/ free dining package that I had previously reserved. I have a one-week stay at Pop Century already reserved. Should I change my vacation to a studio somewhere using my points, or should I keep my week package at Pop? Can I change to a one-day ticket on my Pop package, and apply that ticket toward the cost of a DVC discounted AP?

What would all of you do?????

Everyone vacations differently but here is what I would do.

If the package vs studio with ddp were comparable I'd probably go with the package and put one day tickets towards and AP. I tend to go down 3-4 times per year so an AP is great for me. I also only own 255 points and normally use them for weekends so sometimes I do end up paying for a room. I also don't care where I stay (as long as it is on property, I am an on property snob!)

You have to ask yourself if you want to stay at Pop, if you'll travel again this year, and if staying in a studio would you add the dining plan and what would the price be. Also, are you saving points to travel later this year?

as far as the ticket question???
I use a 10 day non-expireing if you go once a year and do not go to the parks everyday then it makes sense we go to the parks 4 days on an average trip... just an option if the other does not work.
although free dinning is tempting the rooms and resorts are different so it comes down to if you want to saty at POP as $ for $ it will not cost you that much more to stay at a studio in OKW with points. I sue OKW as it is the lowest point resort and by no means can you compare POP to OKW you can purchase the DDP for 38.99 a person per night so assuming 3 in real dollars for 6 nights in august the food plan would 701.82 and using a higher real cost of points would be 6.50 with dues and the buy in cost -I come up with about 5.75 with 2007 maint for what I paid in 2005- for august it would be 98 points or 637.00 -and that assumes your entire trip is in august if part is on september it will be even cheaper- so your total cost to stay at OKW would be 1,338.82 for 3 adults on the dinning plan although POP will be cheaper you are not comparing apples with apples as far as the resorts but you can see you are not paying that much more to stay at OKW even when compared to the cheapest option offered with free dinning. if the trip was in Sept you can reduce this number by 117.00
I would stay at a DVC resort as I bought to enjoy the resorts offered

How do I go about taking my one-day or other package tickets and applying them towards an AP? Are there only certain places that can do that? Or could I do it at check-in?

I believe you can only do that at guest relations at the park.

We exchanged ours at the GS office at DTD...they were open really late so we were able to take care of it on our arrival day even though we didn't check in until late in the evening. There was no line so it was quick and painless!

As far as trying to decide whether to keep the package or use points...I look at it this way: I have my DVC to use for the next 30+ years but there's no guaranty the free DDP will ever even be offered again. So keep the package and take advantage of it while you can because you've got a whole lotta time to use your DVC points.
