DBF and I have been apartment hunting and have found a place we like, so we're in the process of filling out the application. It asks for our checking and savings account numbers. This seems like a lot of personal information to be giving out -- is this a standard thing? As this will be our first time renting, neither of us really know what is the norm. :confused3

Yes, it is standard. most will run a credit check as well.

I am looking at the rental application right now, and it doesn't ask for the checking account or savings account, but it does ask about credit references.

:confused3 Huh... we've had to give checking account number before, but never a savings account. They do almost all run credit checks. I don't know but I kind of wonder if it's any of their business how much you have in savings. If it's in svings, you're not planning on using it, right?

Most of the time I mention I do not want to give that info out and everywhere we have asked has been cool with just running the credit check.

Sounds normal to me. The weirdest rental experience that I ever had was in FL. We were asked to submit to a urine drug screen prior to being approved. Apparently, in FL, they have every right to ask for that. While I had no problem with doing it, because I never use illegal substances, I did find it to be really odd. Maggie
