Apartment application?

DBF and I have been apartment hunting and have found a place we like, so we're in the process of filling out the application. It asks for our checking and savings account numbers. This seems like a lot of personal information to be giving out -- is this a standard thing? As this will be our first time renting, neither of us really know what is the norm.

Yes, it is standard. most will run a credit check as well.

I am looking at the rental application right now, and it doesn't ask for the checking account or savings account, but it does ask about credit references.

Huh... we've had to give checking account number before, but never a savings account. They do almost all run credit checks. I don't know but I kind of wonder if it's any of their business how much you have in savings. If it's in svings, you're not planning on using it, right?

Most of the time I mention I do not want to give that info out and everywhere we have asked has been cool with just running the credit check.

Sounds normal to me. The weirdest rental experience that I ever had was in FL. We were asked to submit to a urine drug screen prior to being approved. Apparently, in FL, they have every right to ask for that. While I had no problem with doing it, because I never use illegal substances, I did find it to be really odd. Maggie
