I am considering upgrading a 8 day park hopper with water parks to an AP.
Will I have to upgrade to the water park AP?
Are there food discounts?
Or do I have to buy tables in wonderland?
What other discounts do you get with an AP?
Can I upgrade before getting there? we are doing Wild Africa trek and Marceline tour. I think that offers an AP discount. I am assuming I would have to be able to upgrade before getting there so I could add the discount? Can I even add the discount now? We already paid.
I am going back for 2nd trip and I think I will break even on ticket price, but other discounts may make it worth it.

1. Not if you DON'T USE any of the WP options before you upgrade.
2. Yes, and more.
3. Completely optional.
4. HERE is a link to the extra benefits you get with an AP.
5. Generally, no. (But, you can call: (407) 939-7523 and ask nicely.)
6. & 7. If there is an AP discount, it MIGHT be possible to get a refund after you upgraded.
8. Very likely you will benefit with the AP.

I am feeling a bit overwhelmed now.
The more I think about this, the more I think I messed up.
I bought our 8 day tickets from Disney and plan on using all 8 days. We are Not on a package. We booked a room only at AKL for 8 nights in June.
I am thinking an AP Rate would be a better deal, but how would I get that if I can't buy the AP ticket until I get there? I can't even look up rates.
We are going back in October for at least 3 park days.
We eat at a lot of table service restaurants.
I wish I would have thought about this earlier.
Now I think I may just lose out.
I do think I read there is an issue with FP+ though?

1. You do NOT need to HAVE an AP in order to book an AP room.
2. There are ways to find out what AP rates are available before you get an AP.
3. No need to get overly upset.
I see no problem at all with what you want to do.
4. No negative issues with FPs, either.

Don't panic. :) You can book an AP rate before you get your AP. There are many who plan to upgrade to an AP after they get to DW, but want to book their room with the AP rate.

You can call and ask about the AP rates or you can go to the Resorts board and on the Discount Codes and Rates sub-forum you can ask if someone will check for you. Here are a couple of fairly recent threads:

I have tickets that I'm upgrading to AP's when I get to WDW. Just last week, I called and was able to switch from the summer discount to the AP rate at AKL for June with no problem. Just call the regular resort reservations number, and they can tell you what's available and make the switch for you.

Call Disney and tell them that you bought this ticket, but you want to spend more money on an AP. Because you purchased the ticket directly from Disney, they will likely allow you to exchange it for an AP over the phone. Also because you purchased directly from Disney, there's no advantage to upgrading at the park ("bridging" does not apply to your ticket).

If you had purchased from any other source, upgrading at the park would be your only option.
