hi i was thinking about getting an ap. could someone tell me how nice the discounts are for the resorts. are they better than the general publics rates?
this alone might steer me to buying an ap.

Yes, AP resort discounts will generally be steeper discounts than general public discounts. The AP discounts vary by season and also the resort level you stay at (deluxe/moderate/value). We normally stay at deluxe and go to WDW during regular or value season and the AP discount is around $100 off per night.

Note that it is also common for AP resort discounts to be blacked out during holidays.

We also buy the Disney Dining Experience card at the AP discount rate ($60 or $65?). This gives you a 20% discount on most sit-down meals in Disney.
